The text is about the competences of an early education teacher in developing the student’s natural science knowledge. Selected typologies of the teacher’s competences and a constructivist approach towards the student’s knowledge are presented. Moreover, the text shows that experience is a particularly effective method of improving the child’s skills and knowledge related to nature at an early education level.

Przedmiotem opracowania jest ukazanie znaczenia wczesnej edukacji przyrodniczej dla funkcjonowania człowieka we współczesnym świecie. Przedstawiono kontekst historyczny problematyki ukazujący powszechność doceniania wczesnej edukacji przyrodniczej już od czasów starożytnych. Na tym tle omówiono główne założenia wybranych współczesnych systemów wczesnej edukacji przyrodniczej na przykładzie edukacji polskiej i brytyjskiej. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na wdrażany w wielu krajach system edukacji STSE (Science, Technology, Society and Environment) będący odpowiedzią na potrzeby i zagrożenia środowiskowe. Przeprowadzone analizy prowadzą do wniosku, że założenia teoretyczne i programowe współczesnych systemów edukacyjnych na ogół doceniają znaczenie wczesnej edukacji przyrodniczej obejmującej wychowanie zdrowotne i proekologiczne. Jednak same założenia programowe nie są wystarczające, ważniejsze jest ich wdrażanie w codziennej praktyce szkolnej. Wczesna wiedza przyrodnicza stanowi bazę dla przyszłego kształcenia biologicznego, biotechnologicznego, chemicznego czy medycznego, na którym opiera się wiele zawodów o szczególnym znaczeniu dla rozwoju cywilizacyjnego. Jest ona również bardzo ważna w kształtowaniu umiejętności radzenia sobie z zagrożeniami, jakie ta cywilizacja stwarza dla zdrowia człowieka i dla stanu jego środowiska.

The subject of this paper is the importance of early natural science education for the existence of a human being in the modern world. A historical context of this issue, showing the universality of appreciation of early natural science education since ancient times, was presented. On this background, the main foundations of selected modern systems of natural science education, illustrated with an example of Polish and British education, were discussed. A particular attention was paid to the STSE education system, adapted in many countries and being a response to the environmental needs and hazards. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the theoretical and curriculum foundations of modern educational systems generally recognize the importance of early natural science education including pro-health and pro-ecological education. However, the sole curriculum foundations are not sufficient as their application in everyday school practice is more important. Early natural science knowledge is the basis for the future education in the fields of biology, biotechnology, chemistry or medicine which forms the foundations for many professions of a particular importance for the development of civilization. It is also very important in forming the skills of dealing with dangers, which the civilization poses to human health and to the conditions of the environment.
