Remarks on network public theory

This paper is a trial of capturing of a relation between traditional public sphere atrophy and the augmentation of a network public sphere. A thesis is advanced that the traditional public sphere is subject of the atrophy, however, the entire network public sphere is subject of the augmentation process. Such a formulated thesis forces a choice between two following issues. The first of them regards a relation between factors, which stimulate the atrophy and the augmentation. The second issue regards a role played by social media in the network public sphere. Considerations included in the paper are based on the public sphere theory of J. Habermas and on the M. Castells’ network society theory.

Start-up companies constitute a very “representative” phenomenon of the global economy and are its special “product”, since they act mainly in the Internet-related and high-technology branches and they are usually seen as born globals. Thus, the type of their activity, implemented business models, products and services offered are “embedded” into the networks, i.e. not only of the local, but rather international and global markets. The same concerns the relations of those firms with other actors of the ecosystems, among others: institutions of science. The problem of relations between start-ups (and business in general) and the knowledge-based institutions theoretically lies in the cross-section of different research domains and can be tackled from different perspectives and on various problematic levels. Taking such a multi-dimensional attitude in analysing the issue is consistent with the holistic approach in tackling and covering the various analytical problems of start-up ecosystems, commonly accepted in the literature (partly as an effect of a kind of consensus among the researchers). Taking into consideration the richness of the aspects and sub-issues which should be analysed when studying the problem of the cooperation between start-up companies in Poland and knowledge-based institutions, the hereby paper implicitly prepares “the ground” for more detailed empirical studies basing on the overview of the chosen literature from the behavioural economy and social network theories. Then, there was the Polish ecosystem characterized with special attention put to the knowledge-based institution.

The article discusses the history of the development of the idea of a network as a tool for research, indicating its dispersion within science, involving the use of extremely different theoretical approaches. The text proposes to include them in the form of the parent confrontation between mainly quantitative research stream and humanistic stream, based on the idea of a network society. It indicates also that a similar breakdown occurs from the beginning of the research within the quantitative stream, taking the form of a confrontation of sociological research and physical or biological research. The article cites facts about the development of all the described tracts, leading to conclusion, that such a state of network research must recall the epistemological reflection on the one hand, and, on the other hand, it establishes the possibility of the emergence of the synthetic and interdisciplinary concepts, which potential examples it shows

Currently, mental disorders are usually concep-tualized as a hidden causal factor, manifested by its symptoms. This notion rests upon the reflective latent model, which is implicitly at work every time complex symptomatology gets summarized by a single number or a categorical state. The present paper reflects on the quantita-tive, testable implications of this psychometric model and shows how its restraints are untena-ble for most mental disorders. The observed data are instead consistent with mental disorders be-ing complex dynamic systems. Instead of being treated as interchangeable measures of the same latent factor, symptoms likely act as independ-ent causal entities, directly affecting each other. In recent years, this shift in ontological stance toward psychopathology has laid a basis for adapting the network theory. Under this theory, a mental disorder is a relatively stable emergent state, which arises due to a pronounced and re-current interaction of causally linked symptoms. It is discussed how models embedded within the network theory can help provide insight into the etiopathogenesis of mental disorders and ad-dress clinical intervention. In conclusion, limits and future challenges to the network theory are discussed.

W artykule przedstawiono najważniejsze teorie i koncepcje ekonomiczne dające możliwość badania współpracy w turystyce. Następnie w oparciu o krytyczną analizę literatury przedstawiono dynamiczny model budowania współpracy w celu kreowania wizerunku regionu turystycznego z perspektywy poziomu interakcji (relacji). W wyjaśnianiu uwarunkowań współpracy zaprezentowano również moduły sieciowej kreacji wizerunku w połączeniu z mechanizmem koordynacji sieci.

The purpose of this article is to explain the mechanism of entities’ cooperation, focused on creating the image of a tourist region. Network theory was applied in the article to explain the mechanism of entities’ cooperation aimed at creating the image of a tourist region product. It is justified based on the adopted, broad definition of a tourist product (complex tourist product) by Gołembski and referring to Leiper’s tourism system model. The article presents the most important economic theories and concepts offering an opportunity to analyze cooperation in tourism. Next, based on the critical analysis of subject literature, a dynamic model for establishing cooperation in order to create an image of a tourist region, from the perspective of interaction (relation) level. While explaining the cooperation mechanism the author also presented the modules of network image creation, along with the mechanism of network coordination.

The application of modular structure in the context of various solutions, both engineering and theoretical, possesses certain limitations. The problems that arise are very salient amidst the discourse concerning the design of modular ontologies and implementation of Semantic Web technologies. Despite a wide array of obstacles related to aptly used modularity in knowledge engineering, there is still a never-ending source of inspiration for the solutions concerning metamodeling, designing and hybridizing knowledge representation systems. Being inspired by natural occurrences of modular structures can be a potent source of innovation and a foundation for developing new approaches both in the domain of knowledge engineering and cognitive science. Due to reference to the computational character of the modular structures present in various domains that are deemed interdisciplinary, one can arrive at the conclusion that certain observed regularities connected with network organisation (i.e., centrality types and measures) are in fact trans-domain (they go beyond their respective domain and have application in a different domain that concerns itself with studying relational structures of various forms) or they possess at least the projectional character in regard to ontology metamodeling.
