European identity is rooted in the “collective memory” of common cultural foundations that include the philosophical-religious idea of the immortality of the human soul. For centuries this idea symbolized man’s extramundane, metaphysical calling to eternity. However, in the circumstances of contemporary consumer society the awareness of this calling has been lost, while the idea of the human soul and the defence of its immortality have been put into question. The following contemporary phenomena have contributed to this state of affairs: domination of the medical sciences especially the neurological ones, which treat the concept of the “soul” as a useless hypothesis; this entails a functionalizing and materializing of the human being, who can no longer refer to the metaphysics of his/her being but only to the physical sphere; as a result of an excess of physicality in the world, a sense of personal satisfaction has become the sole basis of valuation and this in turn causes an irrational fear of old age and boredom; the spectre of boredom misrepresents the (religious) ideas of eternal life as eternal boredom, from which one can only escape into a sequence of earthly pleasures that are meant to replace the longing for eternity; a deconstruction of death and eternity have dissolved and blurred the ideal of eternal life by submerging it in moments of day-to-day existence which are now supposed to be a substitute for man’s former great longings and hopes. However, the deep eschatological content embedded in the idea of the immortality of the human soul has not been ousted altogether. Among contemporary phenomena that hold the hope of retrieving the sense of the “depth dimension” of human life one can mention the following: people are bored with the excesses of the physical world, since neither scientific progress nor improvements of the standard of living have reduced the need for discovering the comprehensive character of human existence; the end of naive confidence in the possibilities of modern natural sciences and technology is reflected in a revival of the question about the sense of the individual and the whole; the unmasking of the false promises of a purely mundane life and only temporal perspectives of the future; discovery of an unalienable religious dimension of human life; belief that besides contact with one’s corporeality, the human being can and should establish contact with that which surpasses what one can see, grasp and sense – in contact with one’s soul as the depth of one’s self; belief that the phrase “immortality of the soul”, whatever it means, is still relevant and necessary as it safeguards the human being and culture against self-annihilation in the form of yearning for earthly immortality that can only end in madness; awareness of immortality is a transformed memory, i.e. memory in which the impossibility of forgetting about the inevitability of death is transformed by the hope of immortality that a human being can only expect to receive from God.

Tożsamość Europy tkwi w „zbiorowej pamięci” o wspólnych podstawach kulturowych, do których należy filozoficzno–religijna idea nieśmiertelnej duszy ludzkiej. Przez całe wieki idea ta symbolizowała metafizyczne powołanie człowieka do wieczności. W realiach współczesnego społeczeństwa konsumenckiego świadomość tego powołania została jednak zagubiona, a idea ludzkiej duszy i obrona jej nieśmiertelności zostały podane w wątpliwość.

Science fiction is often described as a literary genre well suited to philosophical speculation. SF and philosophy share a common interest in the question of immortality, and comparisons and contrasts can be made regarding their respective treatments of the theme. We propose here a sketch of a taxonomy of different models or pictures of immortality offered by philosophers and SF writers. After noting important difference in these models, we suggest that some problems and concerns expressed by philosophers and SF writers alike are the result of conflating different models. It is our hope that these comparisons provide a preliminary sense of the way SF can be said to function as philosophical discourse.
In history, humans have sought the understanding of themselves and their destiny in three metaphysics: in the monism of idealistic pantheism, in the metaphysics of materialistic monism and in the metaphysics of the relationship of creation. Idealistic monism saw the essence of the human being in the soul, which it considered a part of the divine being. In death, freeing itself from matter, the soul returns to the eternal unity with the deity. For materialistic monism, everything that exists is matter in various structural systems. Also, the human being in his/her spirituality is matter and only matter, which in death returns to the further game of evolutionary development. The metaphysics of the relationship of creation – Christian metaphysics, arising from the content of revelation – shows the human being as a being created by a personal God in His image, as a spiritual and corporeal being called to live together with God. It is in this approach, in spiritual and corporeal essence, that the author looks for a spiritual dimension, which through the metaphysics of the idealistic monism was called the soul. Christianity accepted the word (soul), but the revealed content showed its new and eternal dimension which is a great gift of God’s love.

Człowiek poszukiwał i poszukuje rozumienia siebie i swego przeznaczenia w trzech metafizykach: monizmie panteizmu idealistycznego, w metafizyce monizmu materialistycznego i w metafizyce relacji stworzenia.
Human immortality in Eugene Vodolazkin’s novel The Aviator The purpose of the article is to identify and analyze in Eugene Vodolazkin’s newest novel The Aviator (2016) the so-called “life strategies”, leading fictional characters to their personal immortality. Zygmunt Bauman defines the concept of “life strategy” as anatural, almost instinctive effort to push away death and extend our own existence throughout time and space. In fact The Aviator’s main character, Innokentii Petrovich Platonov, in the attempt to restore his memory after decades of cryogenic storage, struggles with the possibility to record and set down in some permanent form the details of his life, as well as his individual existence, for the next generation to come. In Vodolazkin’s novel the research of immortality deals as well with the problem of memory, oblivion, and human frailty.

Zygmunt Bauman definiuje koncepcję strategii życiowej jako naturalną, prawie odruchową próbę człowieka odsunięcia śmierć i przedłużenia własnego istnienia wczasie i przestrzeni. Główny bohater Awiatora, Innocenty Płatonow, próbując odzyskać pamięć po dziesięcioleciach przebywania wstanie kriogenicznego zamrożenia, usiłuje zapisać dla następnych pokoleń szczegóły swego życia, będące świadectwem jego doświadczeń. W powieści Wodołazkina poszukiwania nieśmiertelności są powiązane z kwestią pamięci, przemijania i zapomnienia.
In Plato’s philosophy sexual activity comes from an impulse given by Eros: the messenger between the Olympian gods and human beings. That activity is also a harbinger of aspiration for immortality – that is to leave a lasting mark of one’s own existence in human memory. One of possibilities is the transfer of knowledge about one’s own existence to one’s own descendants and future generations. Plato is of an opinion that inspiration, named madness, resulting inter alia from Eros’s influence (and, simultaneously, an aspiration for immortality) can be also realized in another way – that is, among others, thanks to artistic or artisan creativity, or eminent political, economic, military, sports or religious activity.

The paper aims at analyzing the question of immortality in the context of everyday life. The exemplary works include the ones written by contemporary Russian fantasy and science fiction authors, who deploy the relevant motifs: Vladimir Sorokin (Day of the Oprichnik, Kremlin Made of Sugar, Manaraga), Viktor Pelevin (The Helmet of Horror, Love for three Zuckerbrins), Anna Starobinets (The Living), Boris Akunin-Grigori Chkhartishvili (Happy end), Dmitry Glukhovsky (The Future) and the film of Alexander Zeldovich (and V. Sorokin as the scriptwriter) entitled Target. Regardless of the applied convention the authors indicate that immortality is a curse for humankind for many reasons. Instead of trying to become God human beings should focus on retaining the already existing reality.

The subject of the article is a peculiar book by the Spanish philosopher Manuel Sánchez Cuesta, which is a new and original attempt to analyze human life. The author proposes us a journey into the depths of human consciousness, and therefore the problems that are touching upon are not new – the meaning of human life, death, immortality, God. But the attempts to solve them are new. These solutions go beyond the framework of all the most important previous philosophical discourses.

Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936), a Spanish existentialist living at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, deals primarily with anthropological issues in his philosophical thoughts. He is interested in a specific human being, of flesh and blood (“de carne y hueso”), and above all in the teleological dimension of human existence. The desire for immortality is the basic longing of the human will, which seeks a way out of the labyrinth of nothingness to which man is condemned by matter. According to the Spanish philosopher, man needs God as a strong foundation for the realization of his desire for immortality. The human being carries within himself not only the longing for infinity, but also the hardly expressible “Mystery” that we can identify with the inexpressible presence of the divinity in man. The desire for eternity is fuelled by this “Mystery” that constitutes a part of human nature. In the essay “El secreto de la vida” (“The Mystery of Life”), written in 1906, the main directions of Miguel de Unamuno's thinking appear - the existence of God as an existential problem and the inability to understand Him directly by reason as the cause of the feeling of pathos. Unamuno's philosophical and religious thinking is vitalist and existential. In it he refers to the philosophical intuitions of St. Augustine, Blaise Pascal and Søren Kierkegaard. His reflection on the theological dimension of existence is based on a religious element, which is expressed primarily in the author's in-depth reflections on “the longing for immortality” (“la ansia de inmortalidad”) and on “the sense of the pathos of human life”.

Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) to hiszpański egzystencjalista, żyjący na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. W swojej myśli porusza przede wszystkim zagadnienia antropologiczne, gdyż interesuje go konkretny człowiek, z krwi i kości („de carne y hueso”), a przede wszystkim teleologiczny wymiar ludzkiej egzystencji.
Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) is one of the most important Spanish philosophers of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He belonged to the intellectual elite of writers and thinkers, called „Generación 98”, who criticizing political conformity and cultural stagnation, aspired to give a modern form to the socio-cultural life of Spain. The existentialist’s work focuses on the effort to find the sense of man’s being in the world, without the necessity to cross its boundaries. In his book „Del sentimiento trágico de la vida en los hombres y en los pueblos”, published in 1912 and considered to be his most important work, the Spanish philosopher points to the tension between rationalist attitude and faith, which is for man the only form of guarantee of existence after death. According to Unamuno, Transcendence is inscribed in every particular individual, and the circumstances of life and the desire for immortality awaken the „potential of eternity” inherent in man. However, the spiritual and material composition of a human being makes it impossible to gain absolute certainty as to the subsistence of „conscious self” after death. The clash between reason and the volitional desire of immortality, between intellect and heart, existence and nothingness becomes the cause of the sense of the tragedy of life („el sentimiento trágico de la vida”). The main purpose of life is to satisfy the vital „hunger for eternity”, which is the essence of faith in God.

Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) należy do najważniejszym filozofów hiszpańskich przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Współtworzył intelektualną elitę pisarzy i myślicieli, nazywanych „Generación 98”, którzy krytykując konformizm polityczny i marazm kulturowy pretendowali do nadanianowoczesnego kształtu życiu społeczno-kulturalnemu Hiszpanii.
The current era as never before has been marked by phenomena indicating a deep moral, anthropological and social crisis. It affects the quality of life of both individuals and multiple communities of an ethnic, cultural, racial, religious, etc. Teaching of the Church, asfundamentally directed at explaining the contents of Divine Revelation, cares for the human good, formulating structures of healthy humanism, in defense against the effects of postmodernism and nihilism. The present article presents basic theological notions which underlie the redefinition of the notion the humanism in the context of contemporary aspects of theanthropological crisis. The first part discusses the theological foundation for defining the value of a person and a family. Biblical sources concerning the creative and saving concept of the social order, conditioned theologically, are included here. The second one describes the immanent reductionism, detailing atheism, materialism, agnosticism, eclecticism, relativism, historism, scientism – as concepts defining aspects of the anthropological crisis.

W pierwszej części omówiony został fundament teologiczny do definiowania wartości osoby i rodziny. Uwzględniono tu źródła biblijne dotyczące stwórczej i zbawczej koncepcji porządku społecznego, uwarunkowanej teologalnie. W drugiej części opisano immanentny redukcjonizm, z wyszczególnieniem ateizmu, materializmu, agnostycyzmu, eklektyzmu, relatywizmu, historycyzmu, scjentyzmu – jako pojęć określających aspekty kryzysu antropologicznego.
The foundation of the christian truth about the resurrection is the paschal event, ie the death and resurrection of Christ. However, the interpretation of this dogma is essentially linked to an anthropological vision, therefore the exegesis of biblical protology has a particular significance. At the start of the IVth century, Methodius of Olympus undertook an interesting trial to clarify the status of the first man. Namely, departing from the traditional concept of medietas, which placed Adam in an indeterminate balance between immortality and death, he favoured the idea, which can be called “principaliter (essential or original) immortality”. Thanks to this modification, the author of De resurrectione, gained an important point in resurrectional polemics. He thus presented death, not as an equivalent possibility linked with the original choice of man, but a consequence of his sin, certainly dramatic, but secondary to God’s original plan. In this perspective, the resurrection of the body, and restoring it to immortality, appeared worthy and necessary, being the eschatic realisation of the Creator’s design, his who cannot err.
This is a continuation of “Rational vs. Mystical Readings of Aristotle’s Nous Poietikos. Introduction to the Subject and Overview of Central Positions” where I gave a synopsis of the readings of nous poietikos. I ordered them by introducing a division into “mystical” and “rational”. The mystical ones are rooted in a view that nous poietikos does not belong to particular human beings, but is identical with Deity/divine sphere. According to the rational readings nous poietikos is our cognitive tool and through its activity we can learn about the Deity and emulate it. In this paper, I aim to check which of these models is better suited for Aristotle, in other words: would Aristotle approve of any of them? By comparing the ways of life appointed by them I wish to put theory into practice. In order to solve a mystery from De Anima, I refer to Nicomachean Ethics.

Given that the transhumanist vision of the world is frequently painted as desirable for people and optimistically utopian, the article’s aim is to investigate one of such visions, imagined by Scott Westerfeld in The Succession duology to see if such a utopian model accounts for the necessity of the survival of humanity. While avoiding the usual strictly dystopian and alarmist scenarios, Westerfeld’s postmortal and extropian world is rife with challenges to the transhumanist ideas, asking about the actual grounds on which future communication and cooperation would be based, and the limits of enhancement that need to be drawn not to lead to dehumanization.
The Good-Morrow glorifies love by focusing on its absoute values. The poem cocsists of three parts relating to the lovers" past, presence and future. Love described by Donne is definitely metaphysical, as it removes the boundary between earthly life and the afterlife by defeating death and creating a special being that encompasses not only material but also immaterial space.
Realizacji analizowanego motywu sprzyjają mitologemy, symbole i alegorie (nić Mojr, ogień, sad, pszczoła).

The article deals with the analysis of functioning of the immortality motif in L. Horlach’s poetic novels (Mamay, Ruin, Open Field, Askold’s Finger, Slavic Island). Based on the works of P. Bargar, A. Veselovskij, I. Dziuba, J. Morgan, I. Silantev and S. Thompson, the scecific nature of the motif as a literary element is presented. The relevance of the study is determined by the mythological origin of the invariant motif of immortality, its unique role in Ukrainian (and world-wide) culture and the lack of studies on this topic, all based on L. Horlach’s works. This paper shows the writer’s use of pagan and Christian traditions in describing the afterlife, the understanding of immortality as a feature of a deity or as a reward and punishment for people. The motif of immortality is also connected to the concept of memory, fame and the contribution of personalities to the common goal. The motif is analyzed using mythologies, symbols and allegories (the thread of Moirai, fire, garden, bee).
The purpose of this paper is to attempt the answer to the question of how the soul comes to know, not as a form of the body, but as a subsistent form, independent in its existence from the body, but dependent on its own created act of being (ipsum esse). We will be interested in the question of how the separated soul comes to know: Whether the two intellectual powers that are naturally in the soul - the possible intellect and the active intellect - will realize their acts, and therefore whether the soul will come to know at all, and whether it will come to know individual reality? There will be a theological theme in the paper, that is, a theme determined by the issue of the completion of the human structure in the body (the resurrection of the body) and the related beatific vision, which is the achievement of the end of human intellectual activities. It seems that the question of anima separata is not a purely speculative problem, since it contains the answer to the question of understanding human nature, an answer that is most relevant to philosophy in its practical field. For Aquinas, the existence of a separated soul, suspended, as it were, between existence in an animated body and existence in a glorified body, is “hypothetical”, and the humanity of such an entity is incomplete. However, given that Thomas is essentially considering real and not possible entities, the topic of the existence and workings of the separated soul should not be within the field of his subject matter. It seems, however, that Thomas was interested in confronting such a theme, which would reveal the uniqueness of human nature also in this aspect.

The author argues that immortality need not be as bad as Bernard Williams says it would be. He argues that if an immortal life were characterized by a sufficiently diverse package of experiences, appropriately distributed, there is no reason to think that one would become bored (just as there is no reason to think that one would become bored of such experiences in a finite life). He acknowledges that some pleasurable experiences would be “self-exhausting,” but he says that there are enough “repeatable pleasures” to avoid the tedium of which Bernard Williams speaks.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the category of memory in some of Vladimir Sharov’s most famous novels, such as: The Rehearsals (1992), Before and During (1992), The Old Girl (1998),Raising Lazarus (2002) and Be Like Children (2008). As it turns out, Sharov describes a reality in which, through the transmission of personal memories, crystallized into text and passed from generations to generations throughout eternity, can extend life of the individuum to the point of practical immortality. From a paper diary, containing all the smallest details from somebody’s life experience in chronological order, to the interrogation protocols, which are stored in the archives of the NKVD: text becomes in Sharov’s novels the most important repository of memory, through which it becomes possible not only to «resurrect», but also to relive everything anew. Therefore it can be noticed the prominence of the eschatological component in Sharov’s works: memory can be identified with immortality, and oblivion with death.
