Until not so long Sophists' methods were very popular among young people, particularly the ones regarding moral life. Protagoras did not directly advocate for objective truth, for the good or evil, for justice and injustice. He only taught methods for winning disputes with the argument one was concerned about. The content of the statement itself was of no importance; argument's victory was the ultimate goal. Even the weaskest, unlikelely or simply untrue argument in the discussion can win given that the proper technique and skills in use of words are applied. Along human civilization development, this word-use technique and verbal dexterity have assumed different forms. First and foremost they have served the purpose of relativism in human thinking and acting. Man was gripped with nihilism to a lesser extent; Gorgias was a representative of nihilism. Negation of any truth, radical separation of thoughts, words and being has been present in every era and has had its small-scale representation. The Sophists' views have weakened and still weaken the importance of truth in human life. And only the truth, as the contemporary philosopher Karol Wojtyła says constitutes humanity and every human being's dignity.

W cywilizacyjnym rozwoju człowieka owa technika używania słowa i ludzka zręczność przybierały różne formy. Najczęściej jednak służyły relatywizmowi w ludzkim myśleniu i działaniu. W mniejszym stopniu ogarniał człowieka nihilizm, którego przedstawicielem był Gorgiasz. Zanegowanie jakiejkolwiek prawdy, radykalny rozdział pomiędzy myślą, słowem i bytem znajdował w każdej epoce dziejów małą reprezentację. Poglądy sofistów osłabiały niegdyś i osłabiają dziś znaczenie prawdy w życiu człowieka, a tylko ona, jak mówi współczesny nam filozof Karol Wojtyła stanowi o człowieczeństwie i godności każdego człowieka.
The subject matter of the present article is the image of library and librarian in a forgotten short story by a Polish-Russian writer Józef Julian Sękowski (1800−1858). Sękowski is known in Polish literature as a multi-talented orientalist and polyglot, who changed his national identity in 1832 and began to write only in Russian. In the history of Russian literature he is famous for Library for Reading and Fantastic Voyages of Baron Brambeus, an ironic-grotesque work, which was precursory in Russian prose. Until 1832 Sękowski was, however, a Polish writer. His last significant work was An Audience with Lucypher published in a Polish magazine Bałamut Petersburski (Petersburgian Philanderer) in 1832 and immediately translated into Russian by Sękowski himself under the title Bolszoj wychod u Satany (1833). The library and librarian presented by the author in this piece are a caricature illustration proving his nihilistic worldview. Sękowski is a master of irony and grotesquery, yet the world he creates is deprived of freedom and justice and a book in this world is merely a threat to absolute power.
The article attempts to answer the question: why is classical philosophy worth practising? The answer consists of three points. The first presents negative features of contemporary western culture. The second presents the way classical philosophy is understood, as well as its role in overcoming nihilism. Finally, the third part presents the possibility of using philosophy in theology. The author suggests a return to classical philosophy in the attempt to heal contemporary culture and contemporary man. He does so, because classical philosophy, through its emphasis on the real truth and the real good as the reasons justifying the epistemological and moral orders, puts the culture on the basis of realism. Additionally, it inoculates culture against subjectivism, relativism and pragmatism. In classical philosophy man learns an important truth about himself. He finds out that he is not just an element of history, but has his own nature and essence; he is a person. He also finds out that he is not the centre of the world, but comes from and returns to the Absolute, i.e. the highest truth, good and beauty, and, what is more, the best love. Thus, the final end of personal existence may be the subject not just of theology but also of well conducted philosophy.

The current era as never before has been marked by phenomena indicating a deep moral, anthropological and social crisis. It affects the quality of life of both individuals and multiple communities of an ethnic, cultural, racial, religious, etc. Teaching of the Church, asfundamentally directed at explaining the contents of Divine Revelation, cares for the human good, formulating structures of healthy humanism, in defense against the effects of postmodernism and nihilism. The present article presents basic theological notions which underlie the redefinition of the notion the humanism in the context of contemporary aspects of theanthropological crisis. The first part discusses the theological foundation for defining the value of a person and a family. Biblical sources concerning the creative and saving concept of the social order, conditioned theologically, are included here. The second one describes the immanent reductionism, detailing atheism, materialism, agnosticism, eclecticism, relativism, historism, scientism – as concepts defining aspects of the anthropological crisis.

W pierwszej części omówiony został fundament teologiczny do definiowania wartości osoby i rodziny. Uwzględniono tu źródła biblijne dotyczące stwórczej i zbawczej koncepcji porządku społecznego, uwarunkowanej teologalnie. W drugiej części opisano immanentny redukcjonizm, z wyszczególnieniem ateizmu, materializmu, agnostycyzmu, eklektyzmu, relatywizmu, historycyzmu, scjentyzmu – jako pojęć określających aspekty kryzysu antropologicznego.
Współcześnie obserwuje się narastanie zjawiska nihilizmu. Towarzyszy temu poczucie pustki i bezsensu życia. Człowiek wiary wierzy w absolutną przyszłość ludzkości w Królestwie Bożym i dostrzega w aktualnej historii świata plan rozwoju aż do paruzji – całkowitego odnowienia. Nadzieja chrześcijańska rodzi inicjatywy na rzecz dobra i integralnego rozwoju człowieka.

Nowadays the phenomenon of defeatism and nihilism is increasing. It is accompanied by a feeling of emptiness and nonsense of life. Catholic theology, presenting hope as a supernatural virtue, presents it from a broad eschatological perspective. Supernatural hope protects a person from making absolute the difficulties that exist in life. Thus, it inspires courage to live, defends against doubts and resignation, and points to the paschal perspective. Christian hope - the source of theological optimism - transcends historical and political argumentation that can lead to pessimism, defeatism, nihilism, and catastrophism. It shows not only the vision of how the world lasts but also its fulfilment. A man of faith believes in the absolute future of mankind in the Kingdom of God and sees in the current history of the world a plan of development up to Parousia - complete renewal. Christian hope gives rise to initiatives for the good and integral development of man.
This article is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the drama entitled Abyss by Tadeusz Konczynski with the emphasis on the issue of spiritual nothingness. It aims to diagnose the reality close to the characters, which revolves around the materialistic conception of life and the crisis of traditional morality. Another matter discussed is the creation of the protagonist, who is the expression of “the new age” and the embodiment of moral decay. The author of the article analyses the destructive impact of the character on his close surroundings. She also considers his outlook upon the world, which constitutes the main motive for his actions. The author refers to the notion of liberty or ethical relativism and considers the character’s attitude in the context of nihilism. With regard to that, she points out that the work by Konczynski engages in a dialogue with the thought of Nietzsche. The final issue of concern to the author is the problem of overcoming moral nothingness as well as the relation between ethics and aesthetics.
Autorka rozważa problem nihilizmu i koncepcję sensu życia ukazane w powieści Iwana Turgieniewa Ojcowie i dzieci (1862).

The study is an attempt at grasping the connections between Czesław Miłosz and Tadeusz Różewicz, beginning with the former’s favourable attitude to the latter’s poems and their first post-war contacts. Miłosz’s perspective with a reconstruction of his reading the younger poet’s verses gains here stronger accentuation, though the author also exploits the hidden polemics and references to Miłosz’s “Trzy zimy” (“Three Winters”) in Różewicz’s early poems, as well as looks at the contrasts in world-images of the two poets. The basis of the analysis is “Braterstwo poezji” (“Brotherhood of Poetry”), a collection of correspondence including letters, conversation transcripts, poems and archive materials that mirror uneven rhythm of their relationship interrupted by long periods of silence, occasional meetings, Miłosz’s capricious assessment that oscillates between admiration and sharp criticism, Różewicz’s polemical restraint and contrariness, but primarily it unravels strong and hidden intimate bond between the two men of letters.

The article uses Przybyszewski’s writing as a litmus paper for testing different incarnations of „the Satan of modernity” – civilizational developments, pathologies and ideologies. Blasfemies and demonomanias express internal psychomachia of the era, torn between fading sacrality and nihilistic currents undermining its foundations. Partially Satanist, partially Gnostic phantasmata and the figure of satan can be treated as a defence against nihilism and anarchism, against the metaphysical void of the „world without God”. The author also traces „the Satan of modernity” in the individual consumed by demonic power of unconsciousness, hubris, fear and madness, as well as insanity of the body and soul (demons of gender and art). Works of Przybyszewski can be viewed as an interesting documentation of catastrophical „collective insanity”, suggesting, that the mankind is flawed with ontic and anthropological „pathology” and life itself is insanity

In the paper I try to reconstruct and investigate the reasons which inclined Patočka to strongly expose the problem of sacrifice in his philosophical thought. To do so, I highlight the relationship between sacrifice, the meaning of life and three platonic ideas of goodness, beauty and truth, assuming sacrifice to be a perfect instrument of incorporating them. Finally, I argue that the nature of sacrifice is inherently equivocal and all studies concerning it should include its negative aspects.

The paper presents a relation between nihilism and violence by using the theory of Max Stirner. The author’s choice of the philosopher is driven by her view that nihilism has reached its maturity in his main work. Even more, a key critique raised with respect to the author of "The Ego and his Own" touched exactly on the issue of violence (among others, in deliberations of Dostoyevsky and Camus). The study represents a polemic with the opinions presented in "The Rebellious Man", that Stirner glorified aggression and justified crime. Misreading of his philosophy, the philosophy of egoism, is founded in mixing might with violence which in fact are in that theory irreconcilable. Stirner's affirmation refers to the former whereas he is ambivalent to the latter.
Norwid wykorzystuje konwencję teatru w teatrze i deus ex machina w sposób ironiczny.

The article is an analysis of Norwid’s work in terms of the theme of the Death of God. I focus on the proximity between Norwid’s conclusions and Nietzsche and Heidegger’s presumptions. According to the author of The Joyful Wisdom, dead God leaves Nothingness behind himself. The filling of this space is the major problem which the protagonists of the Pierścień Wielkiej Damy will face. Through dramatization of their behavior and downgrading religious objects to the role of props they will be an attempt at simulating transcendence. Norwid uses the conventions of a play within a play and deus ex machina ironically. It is irony that will become the basis for a new kind of drama, which originally a Norwidian white tragedy was supposed to be. Pierścień Wielkiej Damy is not only an attempt to at a deeper reflection on the crisis of metaphysics, but also to introduce new quality to European drama.
The author of the article proposes the concept of the New Middle Ages and describes the modern and postmodern transformation taking place in Western culture, which is similar to the medieval period’s transition from the Greek-Roman world to the Christian world. With the help of the New Middle Ages concept, the transition from the Christian world to a presently unknown world of new values corresponding to the paradigms of science and technology can be defined. Such a transition is expressed by Friedrich Nietzsche’s idea of nihilism. It contains the postulate about a new man and a postulate about new values in response to the phenomenon of God’s death in the modern and post-modern world. Nietzsche’s nihilism is closely related to the fundamental changes taking place in Western culture. It not only includes negating the values that are the basis of the Christian world, but also the necessity to found new values based on the awareness of the absence of God who guarantees these Christian values. Nietzsche’s nihilism is also a critical reference to those attitudes, ones that do not notice such change of values at all or denies it altogether.

Pope Benedict XVI in his speeches spoke up in weighty matters for humanity. Definitely presented the Catholic position and pointed out mistakes of false ideologies, especially concerning human being, his nature, vocation, the sense of life and conduct. Most of all he indicated the pernicious influence of such ideology on the conduct of man and society. The chief defect of ideologies spread around today and at the same time their common denominator – according to the Pope – is the denial of the transcendent dimension of man, and even directly combating of what is the subject of a formal theological anthropology, that means the man’s relation with God. At the same time, the characteristic of theses ideologies is the fact that they want to be universal and want to form social life. In this article, the author discusses these ideologies and shows what is contrary in them to the theological anthropology. The author also presents the characteristics of anthropology of Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI as dialogical, relational, communional and integral.

In modern discussions the concept of nihilism is used quite freely and shimmers with many meanings, giving the impression of chaos. Nihilism is combined with vague notions, and often imported to the type of label you pelt to your opponents. Nihilist, that is a man who rejects morality, denies the spiritual values and social order, can take different forms and fulfill various roles. The negation of moral standards and values may be associated with a kind of hedonism, materialism and sensualism. Dostoevsky, in a way, also shown social and political nihilism. Existential-metaphysical rebellion is shifted to the dimension of society structure. It may than take the form of conspiracy or even terrorist activities. Recruited nihilists are drawn into the criminal and at the same time revolutionary activity, but it is not yet a well-organized action. In a political version, relating to collective life, nihilism supported various forms of revolt. Its subversive potential, justifying violence, exploded either in the form of revolution or terrorism. Contesting earlier morally relevant discourses, it undermined traditional forms of governance. Herman Rauschning, author of Revolution of nihilism, diagnosing the rule of National Socialism, dealt with political nihilism. It is interesting to track how existential, individual and moral nihilism reveals its social consequences, leading to murderous state of lawlessness. Rauschning recognized nihilism as the indispensable prerequisite and component of National Socialism. According to him, both the Nazi elite and Führer himself relied on nihilism. In this context it means the lack of ideological orientation, instrumental attitude to any idea, the use of violence, terror and deceit. Nazism uses all the values and worldviews, and treats them cynically. Nihilistic attitude manifests itself as a total dynamism, where there is nothing permanent, except maybe the momentum to enhance one’s own power, to fight for domination. Today's elites, may have similarly low pedigree, as the Nazi elite, but have usually more common features (criminal elements do not occur much more frequently here than in other social groups): there are greedy, cynical, mercenary people, capable of sophisticated manipulation, fierce in competition, ready to reach for immoral means and methods. The terror shed by the Islamists in Europe in these days, is said to be “a barbarian attack on our civilization". The problem is that the barbarians are not always strangers, they are often born within our declining civilization along with nihilism.
EN
According to Heidegger, thinking about the world in terms of values makes it impossible for things to appear as they are. Nietzsche's philosophy is for him the philosophy of value par excellence. The will to power (which includes all that is) establishes values as the conditions of its own preservation and growth. Entering into a critical engagement with Nietzschean metaphysics, Heidegger also notes that it is the culmination and fulfillment of the history of Western thought and, as such, it most clearly expresses the way of thinking about reality that defines the modern period. Accordingly, I read Heidegger's discussion of values, will to power and nihilism as an original interpretation of the key concepts of Nietzsche's philosophy and a thorough diagnosis of our age. Toward the end I also point to one element of that philosophy which would allow Nietzsche enter into a critical engagement with Heidegger.
The main purpose of this article is to analyze the deep extinction of Christianity in Europe and to present the possibility of continuation of the Christian religion in those societies that are largely atheistic or agnostic. Atheism is undoubtedly a great challenge for the future. In some countries, today you can see the vision of the reality dominated by an atheistic culture and its worldview. Extremely interesting remarks on Christianity and an atheism can be found in the writings of the German philosopher Karl Rahner (1904-1984) and French mystic Madeleine Sémer (1874-1921). In the work of these two authors there is extremely penetrating diagnosis of the modern times and the prospect of transformation of the Christian religion in the Western world.
