Works by Gertrud von le Fort belong with literary religious discourse and enter a debate between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism.The writer sets her plots in the past, most frequently in the Middle Ages, which enables her to offer a critical assessment of contemporary political, ethical and religious issues.The article presents various connections between literature and religion, in terms of both motifs and style. References to religion are found in the thematic, axiological and linguistic layers of her texts. The analysed works comprise the novellas Der Dom (The Cathedral) and Am Tor des Himmels (At the Heavenly Gate) as well as the novel Magdeburgische Hochzeit (The Magdeburg Wedding). These works also reflect the phenomenon of the so-called cultural Christianity. Le Fort’s characters are not indifferent to the religious system, even if they do not fully identify with it.

The Red Steppe of Joseph Kessel is a valuable work, insofar as it is mainly characterized by its generic hybridity. The six novellas oscillate between the biographical and autobiographical, between history and fiction, between the individual and the collective, between the current and the universal. A sort of juxtaposition and/or co-existence can be traced between the novella of Kessel and other literary genres such as the travelogue, the initiation story, the adventure story, the historical narrative and the fictional narrative. This interdiscursive report makes the historical text an open text, "a hybrid text."

Статья рассматривает проблему жанровой атрибуции short story The Root of All Evil Грэма Грина, которую именуют то новеллой (французская критика), то рассказом (русскоязычная критика), и взаимосвязь ее поэтики с жанровой моделью. Важность и актуальность решения поставленной задачи заключается в том, что это первое исследование жанровой специфики и поэтики одной из гриновских short stories, написанных в комическом модусе, которое открывает перспективу комплексного изучения всего корпуса его малой прозы (до сих пор не изученной). Исследование опирается на теорию жанра (М. Бахтин, Н. Лейдерман, Р. Уэллек и О. Уоррен и др.), согласно которой жанр является формой художественного познания мира, обладает жанровой памятью (семантическим ядром жанра) и задает параметры художественного миромоделирования и прочтения текста, а также использует генологические, текстологические, структурно-аналитические и нарратологические принципы анализа, что позволило сделать следующие выводы. Во-первых, наличие в произведении таких характерных для жанра новеллы признаков, как необычное происшествие или «казус», лежащие в основе сюжета; одна доминирующая сюжетная линия и динамизм развертывания событий с их аккумуляцией; неожиданный сюжетный поворот (новеллистический пуант) и комическое начало, присущее значительному количеству новелл. Во-вторых, смысловое содержание произведения отвечает художественной модели именно новеллистического жанра, для которой характерно осмеяние недолжного, ущербного, ложного (в данном случае религиозного догматизма) и утверждение здоровой и полноценной стихии бытия. Использованная в работе методика и полученные результаты представляются перспективными как для дальнейшего изучения малой прозы Грэма Грина, так и для аналогичных сфер исследования.

The article considers the problem of genre attribution of the short story The Root of All Evil by Graham Greene, which is defined as novella by the French criticism and as a story by the Russian criticism, and correlation of its poetics with the genre model. The importance and topicality of solving this problem lies in the fact that this is the first study of the genre specificity and poetics of one of Greene’s short stories written in the comic mode, which opens the prospect of a comprehensive study of the whole body of his short prose (not studied yet). The research is based on the theory of the genre (M. Bakhtin, N. Leiderman, R. Welleck and O. Warren, etc.), according to which the genre is a form of artistic cognition of the world, has genre memory (the semantic core of the genre) and sets the parameters of the artistic world-modeling and reading of the text, and also uses the genological, textual, structural-analytical and narratological principles of analysis, which allowed to make the following conclusions. First, the presence in the work of such characteristic features of the novel genre as an unusual case or incident underlying the plot; one dominant storyline and the dynamism of unfolding of events with their accumulation; an unexpected turn of the plot (novelistic pointe) and a comic beginning inherent in a significant number of short stories. Secondly, the semantic content of the work corresponds to the artistic model of the novelistic genre, which is characterized by a mockery of the undue, defective, false (in this case religious dogmatism) and the assertion of a healthy and full-fledged element of being. The method used in the work and the results obtained are promising both for further study of Graham Greene’s small prose and for similar fields of research.

The point of departure for the reflections contained in this article is the motif of the sun in Tomasz Mann’s Death in Venice. Analysing the presence of the sun in the work turns out to be fruitful for distinguishing and connecting several symbolic planes, on which the issues of Death in Venice and the drama of the main character are depicted: the relationship between contemporary times and antiquity, the cultural North-South axis, the destructive power of beauty as well as the individual fate of the artist marked by decadence. The figure of the sun seems to provide material for the interpretation of the figure of Gustav von Aschenbach as an incarnation of contemporary Icarus and allows the reader to see the path which the protagonist of Death in Venice follows in a new light.

The name of the Czech writer Josef Bor (1906–1979) is nearly forgotten today, although he was very successful with two works in the sixties. Both works deal with the Holocaust. The novel Opuštěná panenka (1961) is inspired by the author’s own horrible experiences at Terezín, Auschwitz and other places of the Holocaust. In 1963, the novella Terezínské rekviem followed which is subject of this paper. Bor’s novella is about the Jewish musician Rafael Schächter and his staging of Verdi’s Requiem at Terezín. From the viewpoint of reception, this work is interesting on two counts: on the one hand, in the story the reception and interpretation of art play a crucial role, on the other hand, there are some special features in the reception of the novella itself, as the work has mostly been read in the light of the real events the story is referring to, whereas the text’s literary character has often been neglected.

Praca dotyczy wykładników komponentu strukturalnego noweli w perspektywie ewolucji gatunku pojmowanego jako fenomen nie tylko literacki, ale także jako element komunikacji społecznej, osadzony w kontekście kulturowym i antropologicznym. Forma generyczna rozumiana jest jako składnik konstelacji gatunkowej, w skład której wchodzi np. anegdota, facecja, opowiadanie. W wypadku prototypowej noweli, czyli gatunku prozatorskiego o krótkich bądź stosunkowo krótkich rozmiarach można mówić o tendencji do zauważalnej stabilności, jako że stan staropolski i dziewiętnastowieczny charakteryzuje się względnym podobieństwem: w obu wypadkach obserwujemy trójdzielny model, choć różna bywa jego aktualizacja. Z czasem rozbudowaniu ulega segment centralny, niemniej wciąż można wskazać trzy podstawowe ogniwa kompozycyjne. Wyraźny jest tu związek z innymi gatunkami spokrewnionymi, przede wszystkim facecją i anegdotą, które – począwszy od czasów antycznych – wykazują silne związki strukturalne z nowelą. Zmianie ulega także rola puenty, która w staropolszczyźnie stanowiła znaczący element struktury gatunku, nawet gdy nie była wyrażona expressis verbis. Nowela pozytywistyczna z uwagi na fakt zmiany tematyki, a tym samym funkcji w uniwersum komunikacyjnym, rezygnuje z puenty na rzecz bardziej skomplikowanego przesłania, leżącego prawie zawsze po stronie odbiorcy tekstu. Kluczem do stabilności strukturalnej noweli wydaje się jej krótka forma, związana z genetycznym dziedzictwem anegdoty jako krótkiej, zwięzłej narracji codziennej, oralnej u swej podstawy.

This article discusses the exponents of the structural component of the novella, as seen from the perspective of the evolution of this genre - understood not only as a literary phenomenon, but also a case of social communication, embedded in its cultural and anthropological environment. The generic form is understood as a component of the genre constellation, comprising such text types as anecdote, joke or story. In the case of a prototypical novella, that is a genre that relies on the form of a short or relatively short prose text, one can observe a tendency towards its noticeable stability, since the Old Polish and the 19th-century status of this genre is largely comparable. In both époques, one can observe the prevalent tri-partite pattern, yet the way in which it was practically realized could differ at times. With time, the central segment of the novella tended to be expanded, yet the three main structural components were easily recognizable. This structural organization betrays a clear link with other related genres, like the joke and the anecdote. These three text types remained in a close structural correlation since antiquity. The role of the story punch line also changed. In Old Polish, it constituted a vital structural component of the genre, even though it was not always overtly expressed. The Positivist novella resigns from its reliance on the punch line, which is owing to the changes in the subject matter and, hence, its role in the communication universe. The punch line is substituted with a more complex message that is almost always placed on the side of the text recipient. The constrained length of the novella seems to be paramount in ensuring its structural stability. This shortness is anchored genetically in the heritage of the anecdote - short and concise, daily life, oral narrative.

The novella "The Judge" by Ernst Wiechert gives testimony to the poet’s critical analysis and examination of the immediate National Socialist past and, at the same time, tries to provide some forward-looking re-orientation in terms of a comprehensive humanism based on Christian ideals. Wiechert’s narrative follows a dramatic structure in accordance with the tragedies of Classical Greek Antiquity. Faced with an existential crisis, the title character has to prove his moral integrity and steadfastness. Deluded by the pervasive Nazi ideology, the judge’s son goes astray by killing a former friend but finally, thanks to his father’s cautious, gentle guidance, finds his way back. At the end of the novella the son even atones for his wrongs while his father, an unfaltering representative and unswerving advocate of law and justice, resigns from his office in the face of the lawlessness he has experienced under the Nazi terror regime. Apart from analysing the plot of Wiechert’s novella, this study also examines the clearly outlined characters as well as the complex theme of guilt, repentance and forgiveness. Finally, the article focuses on the author’s intention of taking part in the social and political discourse of post-war Germany by conveying his message of humanity and moral integrity.

Opiera się na przypuszczeniu, iż romantyczne założenia, które tworzą podstawę tego tekstu, prowadzą do wątpliwych rezultatów. Istotne aspekty swojej krytyki autor artykułu zawdzięcza Jeanowi Améry’emu.

The article deals with Hartmut Lange’s short story Das Konzert under the perspective of the literary approach to the Shoah. The analysis bases on the presumption that the ideas of romantic aesthetics, which form the ground of the short story, lead to questionable results. The critical reading of Lange’s text is mainly inspired by Jean Améry.

Der Beitrag untersucht Hartmut Langes Novelle Das Konzert im Hinblick auf die literarische Auseinandersetzung mit der Shoah. Die Analyse stützt sich auf die Annahme, dass die romantischen Prämissen, die diesem Text zugrunde liegen, fragwürdige Resultate liefern. Wesentliche Anregung für seine Kritik bezieht der Aufsatz von Jean Améry.
