Po zjednoczeniu obu części Niemiec najważniejszym celem stało się wyrównywanie poziomów rozwoju gospodarczego oraz życia ludności. Oba te procesy stale postępują, jednak w ostatnich latach uległy znacznemu spowolnieniu. Rozpiętości w poziomie rozwoju i poziomie życia są nadal znaczne. Relatywnie lepiej przebiegał ten proces w dziedzinie niwelowania różnic w poziomie życia mieszkańców wschodniej części Niemiec. Przebieg procesu jednoczenia Niemiec świadczy o tym, że proces konwergencji jest procesem długofalowym, nieosiągalnym w jednym pokoleniu. Fakt ten nie potwierdza optymistycznych założeń dotyczących możliwości zniwelowania różnic w poziomie rozwoju i poziomie życia, które zakładano w momencie zjednoczenia Niemiec. Oznacza to także, że polityka wspierania rozwoju wschodniej części Niemiec okazała się mało skuteczna, mimo znacznych środków finansowych przeznaczonych na ten cel. Istniejące rozpiętości w poziomie rozwoju gospodarczego i poziomie życia między obiema częściami Niemiec stanowią nie tylko poważny problem ekonomiczny, ale także społeczny.

Upon the reunification, the most important goal became an equation of the levels of economic development and living standards of the population of both parts of Germany. These two processes have been progressing, though recently they have been considerably slowed down. The spreads in the level of development and living standard are still significant. Relatively better this process was running in the field of levelling differences in the living standard of inhabitants of the eastern part of Germany. The course of the process of German reunification evidences that the process of convergence is a long-term process, unachievable in one generation. This fact does not confirm the optimistic assumptions concerning the possibilities to level the differences in the level of development and living standard, which were assumed at the moment of German reunification. This also means that the policy of supporting development of the eastern part of Germany has appeared to be not efficient enough, despite considerable financial means assigned for this purpose. The existing spreads in the level of economic development and living standard between both parts of Germany are not only a serious economic but also social problem.
