This paper discusses the issue of a biography of a coffin from the perspective of biographical events common to many modern artefacts from the Polish territory. The aim was to identify past and present functions by determining the life cycle of a coffin: from its manufacturing (determination of its manufacturer and recipient; manufacturing techniques; the shape; the size; ornamentation) through ‘participation’ in a funeral ceremony, including transportation of the dead to the church, viewing, inhumation, the period of ‘concealment’, to its revival (e.g. as a museum exhibit). It was determined that at each stage of its ‘life’, the coffin served informative and protective purposes. Additionally, at the stage of its revival, it serves an important verification and identification function from the perspective of researchers in the field. Moreover, preservation of individual burials in coffins and crypts promotes sacral tourism; coffins in the church space have enormous exhibition potential that can be used to build a national and local community.
Najczęściej były to ustne wytyczne, rady, zakazy i nakazy. W spisywaniu wskazówek edukacyjnych ważną rolę odgrywała rodzinna tradycja wysyłania dzieci, głównie synów, do szkół krajowych i zagranicznych, a także w podróże edukacyjne. Rodzinne tradycje spisywania instrukcji zaobserwować można m.in. u naszych najbliższych sąsiadów, na ziemiach czeskich i austriackich.WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Instrukcja jako popularny gatunek piśmiennictwa pedagogicznego w XVII i XVIII w., mając charakter praktyczny, stanowiła ważne narzędzie wychowawcze w dyspozycji rodziców stanu szlacheckiego.

The purpose of this article is to provide a general outline of historical archaeology. The author turns attention to the genesis of this speciality, the problem of its definition, its cognitive possibilities, and the main directions of the development, as well as its social function. He attempts to evaluate the relation between the archaeology of modern times and history sensu stricto, based on the analysis of written records. This includes references to debates taking place in source literature. The author also shows the need for cooperation between historical archaeology and other disciplines of science and for making proper use of new methods. He embeds phenomena concerning the broadly-conceived Central Europe in global realities.
This article presents ambivalent character of the Enlightenment’s legacy, which aside from promised progress brought also new dangers. The essay also presents historical examples of creating “new world” and “new human” and dangers connecting with these attempts. The biggest contemporary challenge concerning this issue is using genetic engineering. The most dangerous contemporary threat for homo oecologicus and “ecozoic era” is applying of violence and creating “ecological totalitarianism.” The hope for the restoration of a ravaged world gives philosophical reflection and biological potential of man for recognizing values and sense of the world. One interesting solution is K.M. Meyer-Abich’s concept of “ecological revolution.”
Archaeological research carried out in Żuławy provides a lot of data on the relics of buildings and everyday life of the former inhabitants of these areas preserved in everyday objects obtained during excavations. The abundance and diversity of collections of movable sources largely exceeds the possibilities of formulating comprehensive scientific studies devoted to selected categories of artefacts. A special category of finds, of which we have very little data from the area of Żuławy, are items related to tobacco consumption. Excavation works carried out at the High Castle in Malbork in 2015 provided a small assemblage consisting of 81 fragments, an interesting research group of clay pipes constituting a material evidence of tobacco consumption in the city. Until now, sources of this category have not been published in the context of excavations carried out in Malbork. The small size of the assemblage and in all registered situations in the field, their secondary depositing in the backfill layers do not diminish the importance of the sources in the broader geographical context, i.e. their use in Malbork. The paper presents the acquired products, amongst them Dutch, English and Prussian pipes were identified, which chronology was determined from the 17th to the 18th century. The presented sources form the basis for preliminary remarks on the dispersion of sources and their chronology in the studied region.

Badania archeologiczne prowadzone na Żuławach dostarczają licznych danych dotyczących odsłanianych reliktów zabudowy i życia codziennego dawnych mieszkańców tych terenów utrwalonego w przedmiotach codziennego użytku pozyskiwanych podczas wykopalisk. Liczebność i różnorodność zbiorów źródeł ruchomych w dużym stopniu przewyższa możliwości formułowania wyczerpujących opracowań naukowych poświęconych wybranym kategoriom przedmiotów.
Concepts of reality in the political philosophy of conservatism were defined in opposition to philosophical movements of Enlightenment and liberal social movements of XVII and XVIII century. Those ideas were anti-rational and anti-individualistic, they sought their very foundation in the lack of physical and intellectual self-sufficiency of a human being. The concepts of the social contract, the material of the intellectual rebellion of the modern social philosophy, caused agitation among conservative thinkers for whom the idea of society features the organic and hierarchic society. Rudimentary roots of order in the conservative thought were founded directly upon the God’s power. With its ahistoricism such reality allows the conviction that it is exactly as it should be and all what happens makes up a part of its universal content and rules prearranged by the Creator. The family is the major courier of values and tradition. It should be a role model for all social structures, hence the patriarchate defines the appropriate relations within the social organism. The social organism is often compared to an organism of an individual where each part has its designed function and when one is malfunctioning – the whole body has been weakened. It is opposite of the modern ideas of autonomy, the innate freedom of a human being who creates reality himself.
The main difference between classical (both ancient and medieval) and modern concepts of natural law lies in the assumption of its supernatural (divine) foundation. Early modern philosophical concepts tend to undermine and gradually to deny God or some other metaphysical entity as the source of natural law. Some contemporary scholars (e.g. Habermas, Bobbio) define this process as transition (modernization, rationalization, Positivisierung) of traditional natural law towards the idea of natural rights and human rights. We can distinguish at least three main schools of natural law during the 17th and 18th centuries, each one more radical than the others: de Groot dares to consider the natural law “as if there were no God”. The philosophers of early Enlightenment (e.g. Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Voltaire) were perhaps more daring, nevertheless they were all deists and the “Supreme Being” still validates natural law in their writings. The article aims to examine the most radical view on natural law, i.e. partly forgotten and underestimated ideas of French materialists: La Mettrie, Diderot, Holbach, Mably, and Condorcet. For they were all thinkers of the radical Enlightenment (J. Israel), all of them were materialists and atheists, and they perceived the nature and natural law as completely separated from God or other supernatural being. Unlike their older colleagues, these radical philosophers demanded equality (for women and ethnical minorities as well), emancipation, and social justice for all classes. This papers describes the idea of natural law within the radical Enlightenment movement, and investigates some political consequences of this interpretation during the French Revolution. While strongly materialistic, progressive, and atheist, the ideas of Diderot, Holbach, Mably, and Condorcet were also perceived as politically dangerous. All revolutionary attempts to put these ideas into political and social practice have failed. Finally, these ideas were refuted, but they returned during the 19th- and 20th-century debates on human rights.

Główna różnica pomiędzy klasycznymi (zarówno antycznymi jak I średniowiecznymi) a nowożytnymi koncepcjami prawa naturalnego dotyczy założenia o jego nadprzyrodzonym (boskim) źródle. Wczesnonowożytne propozycje filozoficzne wykazywały skłonność do kwestionowania i stopniowego odrzucenia Boga lub jakiegoś innego bytu metafizycznego jako źródła prawa naturalnego. Niektórzy współcześni myśliciele (m.in. Filozofowie wczesnego oświecenia (m.in. Aczkolwiek zostały odrzucone, to jednak powróciły w XIX i XX wieku w ramach debaty nad prawami człowieka.
The article discusses views on upbringing as a cultural phenomenon. It analyses two ideas characteristic of modern pedagogy: 1) the conviction that children should be helped in some way by means of education in order to make them better people, and 2) the complaint that school education is disconnected from everyday life. Both ideas are analysed in the context of the place they occupy in the functioning of contemporary societies. In conclusion I suggest that their role consists in reproducing – rather than changing – the modern society.
Research conducted in 2017 at ul. Stary Rynek in Słupsk provided numerous post-medieval archaeological sources, constituting material evidence of the everyday life of the town's inhabitants in the period from the 17th to the 19th century. The article presents for the first time 266 fragments of clay pipes, the presence of which confirms tobacco consumption in the town. After determining the provenance of the products, it was indicated that both the 17th-century specimens and those dated to the first half of the 18th century come from Netherlands workshops (Types 2 and 3). Parts of pipes dating from the second half of the 18th to the 19th century were identified as products of Prussian manufactures, including Rościn and Weissenspring. The main profile of clay pipe products used by the inhabitants of Słupsk are one-piece pipes. A preliminary thesis can be formulated that the use of this category of pipes is part of the culture of tobacco consumption characteristic of Pomeranian centres and the western part of today's territory of Poland. This distinguishes the material setting of tobacco consumption from the phenomena recorded in central, southern and eastern Poland, where clay compound pipes were used, appearing in assemblages in proportions larger or similar to those of one-piece pipes. Słupsk is located in the communication zones and transport network between three main historical commercial centres – Szczecin, Kołobrzeg and Gdańsk. Comparison of the materials obtained from these cities and surrounding areas with the finds from Słupsk allowed for the formulation of the first observations regarding the specificity of these products. Pipes from the first quarter of the 17th century are recorded in Gdańsk and Szczecin. There is a significant difference in the number of these pipes in both centres, of which Gdańsk stands out for the abundance of this category of products, while in Szczecin only single items were found. In Stargard, neighbouring Szczecin, one specimen was registered dated to around the mid-17th century. Materials from Słupsk dating from around the mid-17th century correspond more closely to Kołobrzeg and Szczecin in this respect. Among the products dated to the first half of the 18th century, type 2 bowls from Słupsk with the following signatures: a pipe under the crown, the Gouda coat of arms, a crescent (from the top) correspond to products from Gdańsk, where they are also repeatable in this co-occurrence. Instead, younger type 3 pipes, including those with the Hamburg coat of arms signature, not previously recorded in Gdańsk, refer to assemblages from Szczecin and Stargard. In terms of numbers, individual products with the snake signature are registered in Gdańsk, while their presence is quite numerous in the West Pomeranian region. A similar situation was recorded for materials dating from the second half of the 18th to the 19th century. For Słupsk, they are more comparable to the West Pomeranian region, where both early products from Rościn and Weissenspring are registered, which have no analogy in Gdańsk. To sum up, at the current stage it can be preliminary indicated that the oldest pipes from Słupsk confirming tobacco consumption in the town, are dated from around the mid-17th century. This situation differs from the phenomena observed in larger port cities, where this reaches the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century. A preliminary analysis of the profile of products used for tobacco consumption in Słupsk from the material side shows its greater connection with Eastern Pomerania in the period from the 17th to the first quarter of the 18th century. The change takes place in the second quarter or around the mid-18th century, at which time the range of products corresponds to the pipes distributed in Western Pomerania. The preliminary conclusions formulated on the basis of the analysis performed require further verification in terms of enlarging the source database. The state of research on pipes from Pomeranian towns, with the exception of studies relating to Stargard and Gdańsk, has practically not been updated in relation to the first publications from about thirty years ago. Studies on issues related to tobacco consumption require expanding the source base, therefore even small collections of artefacts, including those from archaeological research in Słupsk, constitute valuable information for further analyses.
The article presents results of the analysis of the sculptures from the territory of the former Duchy of Pomerania with special attention to their usefulness in the study of weaponology. The author has attempted to examine how the armour was depicted on the objects from the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. Pomeranian elite used several types of plate armour in the early modern period. It was presented differently, making it sometimes impossible to identify. In the analysed material, there are simplifications and antiquating, which reduce the level of authenticity of the source. On some Pomeranian sculptures from the beginning of the early modern period plate armour is depicted with great attention to detail. In the case of epitaph from c. 1550 of Bogislaw X of Pomerania, presented details allow for identifying the real armour.

The article examines an open-work chafing dish that was discovered in Stargard during trial excavations in 2017. The form and the production technique indicate that the vessel was made in central Germany at the end of the 17th century or at the beginning of the 18th century.

The subject of this article is description and systematization of leather artefacts collected by the expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the course of archaeological excavations in Smolensk in 2011–2012. The chronology includes a long period from the 11th to the 18th century. Particularly interesting was an assemblage of special funeral footwear, discovered in burials from the second half of the 17th century, to which analogies are found not in Russia but also in the territory of Poland and Belarus. The collection of leather artefacts from excavations in Smolensk illustrates well the process of development of tanner-shoemaker crafts and cultural relations with Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russia.

Abstrakt: Carl August Ludwig Most (1807–1883), najbardziej ceniony szczeciński malarz rodzajowy, portrecista i pejzażysta, przyszedł na świat w rodzinie rzemieślniczej.

There is a castle hill to the east of the village of Berezowiec (Karelichy region, Grodno district, Belarus), on the Servech River, entered in the register of monuments as a stronghold from the Iron Age, the Middle Ages, and modern times. By analysing written and genealogical sources, it has beeen possible to establish that the Berezowiec castle and manor belonged to the Kmita Stretowicz family between the late 15th and 16th centuries. In addition, it can be demonstrated that in the first half of the 16th century, on the Servech River, there were two estates called Berezowiec. One estate belonged to treasurers of the Sołtan family, and the other to the Kmita Stretowicz family. The initiation of the research in the hillfort was influenced by a local legend, according to which there was a castle near the village of voivode Kmita. The research was conducted both in the archives and in the field, on the top of the hill and at its the foot. The inventories of the farm and the Berezowiec estate include houses, outbuildings, the manor fence, and farm buildings.

Jedna posiadłość należała do podskarbich z rodziny Sołtanów, a druga do Kmitów Stretowiczów.
During archaeological excavations conducted on the site of the relics of manor houses in Kozłów, Silesia province, an impressive set of stove tiles has been discovered. Some of the tiles’ facings were decorated with representations that are interesting iconographic sources for the study of early medieval arms. The first tile was discovered in the remains of the manor from the late 15th and 16th c. Facing of this tile is decorated with a side profile of the rider’s head in a closed helmet with a crest. Visual presentation is not so detailed and not all the details of surface texture are sharp. The portrayed helmet is probably a tournament example called the frog face helm. Its bell is crowned with an extensive crest, which is an oval with short and long feathers modeled in different directions. At the back of the bell there are ribbon like mantlings visible. Due to the lack of large part of the tile it is difficult to determine whether the visible crested helm was a part of a heraldic motif or whether it was connected with representations of knightly culture such as tournament scenes for example. The first possibility seems more likely. The second tile was found in layers associated with the manor which functioned in the 16th century. The presentation on the facing of tile refers to a series of woodcuttings created by the German renaissance painter Georg Pencz, gathered under one title of Twelve Heroes of the Old Testament. These works were inspired by the text of the poem by Hans Sachs from 1531. The author was glorifying the heroic exploits of the twelve heroes from the Old Testament: Joshua, Gideon, Jephthah, Samson, Jonathan, David, Abia, Azah, Josaphat, Amazia, Hezekiah and Judas Maccabeus, portraying them as symbols of the defenders of Christianity. Facing of the tile from Kozłów is ornamented with the image of Juda’s king Amazia. Similar to a Pencz’s graphic, he has been presented in an armour with his head and torso slightly turned to the left. The whole scene was made with high attention to the details, which allows us to make some valuable observations on the components of the armour. The helm is a close helmet with bevor and gorget, depicted with a lifted visor. The torso is protected with a bulging breastplate with fauld attached below. The arm is covered with a massive overlapping breastplate pauldrons and bulging rerebrace. In the lower part, at the height of faulds, there is a visible fragment of a sword hilt, one and a half or two-handed, topped with an oval pommel. A similar suit of armour, often called Maximilian armour, was used in Europe since the 1630s. Armour of this type was popular at that time in Silesia as well, what is indicated by the numerous tombstone representations.
Galloons, or textile bands, in which the ornament is usually made up of metal threads, are alongside other fabrics a subject of interest for the researchers both in terms of their structure as well as the raw ma-terials used in their making. In most cases, the analysis is limited to the determination of the raw material and a description of the weave, fabric density and the type of the ornament. However, this kind of description is incomplete and requires a supplementary archaeomet-ric examination. Thanks to the archaeometry, different types of met-al threads in fabrics as well as their varied applications can be stud-ied. The literature on the subject lists many various examples of metal threads being used – made of gold, gold and silver alloys, or gilded or silver-plated copper wound on silk, linen or wool fibers. Moreo-ver, different manners of obtaining metal threads can be seen, such as by wrapping wires around a fibrous core or winding strips of metal on a silk fiber. Due to the historical value of historic textiles, archae-ometric tests are usually based on analytical methods, which should not cause significant damage to the artefacts. These are usually spec-troscopic techniques based on the use of the X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) and microscopic observations at various magnification levels. Four silk galloons from the archaeological research in Toruń (the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and Gdańsk (the Church of the Holy Trinity) were selected for the analysis (Fig. 1, 7). The galloons were used for decoration as well as to support the upholstery covering the outer surface of the coffins. The macroscopic analysis showed that the layout of the geometric pattern in the selected samples is very similar. It was created in an identical manner in all instances – through the use of an additional metal thread weft. Therefore, the primary goal of the research was to identify the raw material of the metal thread in an attempt to answer the question if all the galloons could have been produced in the same haberdashery workshop. The archaeometric examination carried out on the metal threads confirmed that they are made of gilded silver (Fig. 2, 3, 6, 9, 11, 12). Gold, which was identified in the metal threads, was applied only superficially on the metal strips and is easily abraded, which can be observed as an uneven color on the surface of the threads (Fig. 4, 5, 8, 10). In addition, due to the significant deformation of the threads that occurred during the deposition of the fabric and their poor state of preservation, it is difficult to discuss the results of the microscopic observation of the threads (Figs. 13, 14). The analysis of the results of the metallographic examination indicates that silk fibers could be wrapped with fairly diverse metal materials. Based on these findings, it cannot be determined whether the galloons were manufactured in the same haberdashery workshop.
The principal objective of this article is to introduce the sacred realm of nature, discussed by Romano Guardini (1885–1968) in the philosophical works he devoted to the interpretation of the writings of Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843). Guardini conducted his research on Hölderlin’s output in the philosophy of religion. With respect to Hölderlin’s poems, Guardini noted the special role played in them by nature understood as the space inhabited by the sacrum. In fact, Hölderlin’s literary works are pervaded with a new form of Post-Christian religiosity, which consists in the practice of re-interpreting Christian symbols and translating the religious phenomenon from one objective reality to various, individualized forms. ------------- Received: 19/11/2019.

Philosophy has always accompanied a human being as the way leading to discover wisdom. The Christian Revelation given by God in the person of Jesus Christ answers to the fundamental questions. The article states new tasks which, according to the encyclical Fides et ratio, stay in its serving role regarding theology. The definitions and concepts mentioned in philosopher’s writings enable us to explain the content of the faith as far as it is supported by realism and objectivity. The modern crisis of identity of a human being is connected with the abandonment of legacy of a classical idea that classical philosophy was based on. Nihilism, philosophy of relativism and pragmatism are characteristic features of present mentality but they cannot show the real sense of actuality to a man.
