The article is related to the centenary of International Labour Organization (ILO). Author presents legal standards of maternity protection stipulated in conventions and recommendations which were adopted during the past 100 years. Though ILO has a separate catalogue of documents directly related to maternity protection, some other legal acts can be viewed as extending the protection. The article analyses the evolution of the maternity protection regulations through all the most important conventions and recommendations.

Na przykładzie norm w zakresie ochrony macierzyństwa wskazano rozwój standardów Międzynarodowej Organizacji Pracy w tym obszarze. Informacje te uzupełniono również o przepisy zawarte w tych dokumentach MOP, które jedynie pośrednio dotyczą kwestii ochrony macierzyństwa.

Aim: The examination of the topic of the protection of the mother and child in the interwar period, taking into consideration,particularly,undesired and difficult maternity and threats to childhood on the basis of trade magazines “Child care”, “Children’s life” and “Life of the young people”. Methods: Analysis of documents and printed sources. Results: The presentation of assumptions and the most important forms of temporary and institutional care of maternity and infants in the Second Polish Republic. Conclusion: The analysis of projects and practices of the protection of infants and maternity presented in the trade magazines enlightens the existence of propositions of concrete solutions for abandoned children and lonely maternity in the interwar period. The authors of this conception popularized not only the problems and challenges of the protection of maternity but also the knowledge about childcare itself. They helped to develop the background enabling the start of concrete actions. They promoted some less known but desired forms of social care like for example stations of mother and child care. Presented activities shaped the foundations of custodial pedagogy as well, especially as far as the conceptions and methodology are concerned.

Cel: Rozpatrzenie problematyki opieki nad matką i dzieckiem w okresie międzywojennym, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kwestii niechcianego i trudnego macierzyństwa oraz zagrożonego dzieciństwa w oparciu o czasopisma branżowe: „Opieka nad Dzieckiem”, „Życie Dziecka” i „Życie Młodych”. Metody: Analiza dokumentów i źródeł drukowanych. Wyniki: Przedstawiono założenia i najważniejsze formy opieki doraźnej, i instytucjonalnej nad macierzyństwem i niemowlętami realizowane w okresie II Rzeczypospolitej. Wnioski: Analiza projektów i poczynań praktycznych w zakresie ochrony macierzyństwa i niemowląt prezentowanych na łamach przytoczonych czasopism uświadamia, że w okresie międzywojennym istniały przesłanki do rozwiązania problemu porzucania dzieci i samotnego macierzyństwa. Autorzy podejmujący tę problematykę przyczyniali się nie tylko do popularyzowania problemów i zadań w zakresie ochrony macierzyństwa, ale również samej wiedzy o opiece nad dzieckiem. Pomogli w tworzeniu zaplecza sprzyjającego podejmowaniu działań w tym zakresie. Promowali mało znane, a pożądane społecznie formy opieki, jak np. stacje opieki nad matką i dzieckiem. Zaprezentowane działania miały również swój udział w kształtowaniu się podstaw pedagogiki opiekuńczej, zarówno w obszarze pojęciowym, jak i metodycznym.
