One of the most prominent Polish bibliologists of the twentieth century, Prof. Aleksander Birkenmajer, conducted in 1949 his first ever library inspection, commissioned by the Ministry of Education, at the University Library and the Secured Book Collection Repository in Wrocław. Both institutions held at the time library materials that were under special surveillance. Between 1947 and 1949, the Repository received about 900,000 volumes of mainly German provenience from Lower Silesia. In his subsequent report, Birkenmajer indicated the existing problems and proposed some ways to overcome them. He also highly praised the staff in charge of the collections who demonstrated their commitment and expertise in such harsh working conditions in this hard post-war period. Aleksander Birkenmajer proved to have been an insightful, solid, highly efficient and objective inspector. His Report is a valuable document and source material for a better understanding of the history of the Wrocław-based Repository and the University Library in Wrocław. Undoubtedly, the report should be included in any future research work concerning the reconstruction and rebuilding of libraries and librarianship in Lower Silesia and in Poland.

Jeden z najwybitniejszych polskich bibliologów XX wieku prof.
Środki ochrony roślin to związki chemiczne. To stanowi podstawę do wyznaczenia stężenia cieczy roboczej, zapewniającej wymaganą skuteczność ochronną, którą należy opryskać z określoną wydajnością dyszy powierzchnie ochranianego materiału: papieru, pergaminu, skóry czy tkaniny.

Antiseptics are chemical compounds or mixtures of chemical substances that are used for protecting cultivated plants, which also may be used as a new generation biocides in the protection against microorganisms and preservation of library books. The basic component determining the specificity of a plant protection product used for book conservation is the substance biologically active in relation to certain organisms, i.e. which causes the disorder of the physiological processes by blocking the activity of the respective enzymes. The aim of the study was to investigate a group of fungicides, not yet in full use in agricultural practice, in terms of their usefulness in protecting old books. For the investigation triazole derivatives were chosen (as a group of asymmetric fungicides), whose mechanism of biological activity is the inhibition of ergosterol, the substance building blocks of the cell membrane. Before the actual investigation, the biological activity of the fungicides was referred in old books preservation process, involving the appointment of the so-called. ED50 coefficients, i.e. what amount of the substance is needed to destroy half of the pathogen population. The ED50 is used to determine the concentration of working fluid which should be sprayed on the surfaces of the protected material: paper, parchment, leather or fabric, providing the required protective efficacy.
The article discusses the activities undertaken in the years 2020–2022 by the Library of the University of Lodz as part of projects including old prints collections from the first half of the 17th century and manuscripts collections from the 15th–18th century. It presents the successive stages of projects to protect and popularize the collections, including: selection of the collection, development, conservation, digitization, popularization and promotion activities. It is an attempt to answer the question about the place and role of cultural heritage in the real and virtual library space, in the academic, local and international community.

Artykuł omawia działania podjęte w latach 2020–2022 przez Bibliotekę UŁ w ramach projektów obejmujących zbiory starodruczne z pierwszej połowy XVII wieku i rękopiśmienne z XV–XVIII wieku. Prezentuje kolejne etapy projektów, służące ochronie i popularyzacji zbiorów, a wśród nich: wybór kolekcji, opracowanie, konserwację, digitalizację, działania popularyzatorskie i promocyjne.
