The paper deals with answers to following questions: where did the derivation of feminine surnames from masculine surnames come from; why feminine surnames are affected by this process and what are the functions of personal names. The author further refers to onymic signs (functions) of official and unofficial names, briefly indicated the development of the Slovak naming system, focusing on the development of the naming of women and on the origin of today’s official suffix -ová and on other derivative suffixes, which even today functions in unofficial naming sphere.
