This article is focused on distance learning in higher education. It analyses and compares the development of distance learning and conditions of distance learning in different countries. It describes significant differences in the development of distance education in higher education in individual countries. We meet with various forms of implementation of distance education. The divergence in approaches towards distance education in different countries is caus ed by different cultural aspects, the tradition of distance learning, the development of information and communication technologies, and different legislative norms in the area of education. There are many types of organisational models for distance education. A particular model might be dominant in one country, while in another country there may exist a variety of different organisational models for distance education.

The article looks at the issue of lifelong learning, i.e. learning throughout a person’s lifetime for either personal or professional reasons. In the first part, the author provides general background on lifelong learning, including UNESCO documents, EU programmes and Polish legal framework. The second section covers selected organizational forms of lifelong learning in Poland, with particular attention given to universities of the third age and open universities. Artykuł przedstawia historię Academia Electronica – wirtualnej części Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, działającej od 2007 w Second Life. Zaprezentowano przemiany jakim Academia podlegała oraz zarysowano problematykę, która była poruszana w niej na przestrzeni 14 lat. Wyszczególniono trzy wątki analizy, z których pierwszy dotyczy filozofii rzeczywistości wirtualnej, drugi prowadzenia dydaktyki w środowisku graficznym 3d oraz trzeci, związany ze społecznym znaczeniem otwartego uniwersytetu. Tekst jest autobiograficzny, w tym znaczeniu zawiera krótkie wspomnienia dotyczące szeregu zdarzeń, tak związanych z rozwojem Academia Electronica jako uniwersytetu, jak również osobistych refleksji wynikających z długotrwałego przebywania w świecie Second Life.

The paper shows the history of the Academia Electronica – a virtual department of the Jagiellonian University, which has been in operation since 2007 in Second Life 3D graphic environment. The contributor focused on the transformation it underwent and problems which have been addressed for 14 years. Three aspects of the analysis have been identified with the first one concerning the philosophy of virtuality, the second – teaching in the 3D graphic environment, and the third one revealing the social importance of an open university. This text is autobiographic, which means that it includes short memories on a number of events related to the development of the Academia Electronica as a university alongside the contributor’s personal reflections based on his long staying in the Second Life world.
