The article presents the analysis of Pope Francis’ teaching regarding media information tasks. The research was carried out on the basis of the Pope’s messages for the World Day of Social Communication in the years 2014-2017. The analysis was conducted in the context of media-related literature. Media information tasks are a response to contemporary social phenomena related to media development, particularly of social media. The article shows relevance of the Church teaching in the field of social media theology.

The article presents the analysis of Pope Benedict XVI’s teaching about the most important responsibilities of media. The research was carried out on the basis of the Pope’s messages for the World Social Media Day in the years 2006–2013. The analysis was conducted in the context of media-related literature. It discusses the responsibilities of social communication means which have been identified as a response to contemporary social phenomena related to the media age. The thesis is a summary of the Pope’s teaching in the period mentioned above in the field of media studies.

The primary source of the article "The Christian way of presence on the 'digital continent' in the messages of Benedict XVI" are speeches at the World Day of Social Communications. During his pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI delivered eight such messages. In the first messages he shared his reflections on the media, and recently alluded directly to the issue of the "digital continent". Analysis of these speeches showed that the pope - despite his age - understood perfectly the Network and its users - the "digital natives" (digital natives), and his thoughts and reflections on the Web are now a valuable voice in the discussion on the Church's presence in digital space. The article consists of three parts. In the first, the Internet is briefly characterized, and named by Pope Benedict XVI the "digital continent". The Internet is the modern Areopagus and the agora, where the roads cross between believers in God and those who reject His existence. By analogy to the Athenian Agora and the Areopagus, which was for the apostles - especially St. Paul - a place to preach the Gospel, the contemporary virtual Areopagus demands the pastoral involvement of priests and the courageous faith witness of Catholics. These issues are described in the second and third parts of the article.

Podstawowym źródłem analiz przedstawionych w artykule Chrześcijański styl obecności na „cyfrowym kontynencie” w orędziach Benedykta XVI są przede wszystkim przemówienia na Światowe Dni Środków Społecznego Przekazu. W czasie swojego pontyfikatu papież Benedykt XVI wygłosił osiem takich orędzi. W pierwszych orędziach dzielił się swoją refleksją na temat środków masowego przekazu, w ostatnich nawiązywał bezpośrednio do problematyki „cyfrowego kontynentu”. Analiza tych przemówień pokazała, że papież – mimo sędziwego wieku – doskonale rozumiał Sieć i jej użytkowników – „cyfrowych tubylców” (digital natives), a jego przemyślenia i refleksje na temat Sieci są także dzisiaj cennym głosem w dyskusji na temat obecności Kościoła w cyfrowej przestrzeni. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej krótko scharakteryzowany został Internet, nazwany przez Benedykta XVI „cyfrowym kontynentem”. Jest on współczesnym areopagiem i agorą, na których krzyżują się drogi zarówno wierzących w Boga, jak i odrzucających Jego istnienie. Przez analogię do ateńskiej agory i Areopagu, który był dla Apostołów, zwłaszcza św. Pawła, miejscem głoszenia Ewangelii, współczesny areopag wirtualny domaga się duszpasterskiego zaangażowania kapłanów i odważnego świadectwa wiary świeckich katolików – zagadnienia te zostały opisane w drugiej i trzeciej części artykułu.
