In the presented paper, we pay attention to the non-standardized names of caves and abysses (speleonyms) located in the territory of the Slovak Karst National Park. The aim of the study is to present lingual and extralingual analysis of interonymic contacts in the creation process of speleonyms in the described area. The introductory part of the paper offers a theoretical overview of how the term transonymisation is currently understood in Slavic onomastics.

The present contribution analyses the terms chřib and brdo in their appellative and proprial roles in the space where Slavic languages were and are used, and evaluates their semantic relations. It is possible to conclude that one term is a calque of the other. It leads to a new etymological solution for the word chřib: an adaptation of the West Germanic term *xrīƀōn ‘rake’.
