Does religious orthodoxy and reflexivity exclude each other? In this article I discuss the question of a postsecular reflexivity of belief. The key issue in this context appears to be the functioning of belief as a symbolically generalized communication medium. With respect to this I consider some theoretical problems and dilemmas of religiosity: orthodoxy vs. heterodoxy, coherent personal identity vs. complementary social role. The article starts with a definition of postsecularism, based on the reflections of Habermas, Berger and Casanova, as a change in social consciousness consisting in a conversion of attitudes towards religion from naïve to reflexive. Then I present main arguments of the secularization theory on the grounds of Luhmann’s social systems theory, distinguishing two interconnected levels: functional differentiation of modern society and individualism. Finally I make some remarks on Luhmann’s attitude towards religion.
Nikolai Novikov, an eighteenth-century Russian publisher and writer, started his publishing career in St. Petersburg with a series of short-lived satirical journals. In these journals, he expressedstrong religious feelings that were frequently mixed with patriotism. He found such patriotic religiosity unfulfilling and turned to the masons who he thought had answers. He found masonryimportant to the extent to which it agreed with Christian tenets. His faith deepened as the result of his prolonged illness which marked his spiritual rebirth. The article argues that in his essays and letters Novikov maintained that religion was a very important part of life, in fact, life’s foundation. In particular, education of the mind and the heart should be founded on Christianity religion.Masonry was very important in Novikov’s life, but because he believed that masonry should lead in the direction of Christianity, he remained Christian deeply committed to the dogmas and rites of the Orthodox church.

Mikołaj Nowikow, XVIII-wieczny wydawca i pisarz rosyjski, rozpoczął swą działalność wydawniczą w Petersburgu serią krótkotrwałych pism satyrycznych.
Pomorskiye otvety is a presentation of the doctrine of the Old Believers in form of answers to 106 questions presented by a representative of the Synod, hieromonk Neofit. In this work written primarily by Andrei Denisov, major points of disagreement between the Old Believers and the official church arc discussed: the 2-finger sign, the number of the sung alleluias, the representation of the cross, the Eucharist, the spelling of the name of Jesus, the wording of the creed, and many others. The article briefly presents these points and responses to them. It also discusses the problem of viability of sacraments among Old Believers and focuses on the Eucharist and the sacrament of marriage.

A characteristic feature of the post-modern society is highlighting the crucial importance of the emotions and experiences in every field of human life. The sphere of spiritual life is not an exception. In the postmodern model of human perception, emotion and feeling become the only criterion by which the effectiveness and accuracy of the different projects of life are verified. Considering deeper, it turns out that emotionalism rejects the transcendence of God and often it degrades from the personal reasons for any creature to the role of positive emotions. This emotionalistic attitude towards life in the postmodern age contributes significantly in a number of negative trends in the development of society. The phenomenon of emotional experience is actually in some environments presented as a exclusive criterion for assessing the viability of the faith. It seems that postmodern religiosity of contemporary Christians of the West is often based on the false statement that „God exists when you feel him. You have the right to ‚enjoy God‘.“ the author wants to present his view on the phenomenon of emotional experience in some religious practices in the environment of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal as a theologian who wants to see the problem from the perspective of Catholic orthodoxy and orthopraxis. The aim of the work is not to undermine the place of emotion in the spiritual life of a Christian, author wishes to draw attention to some negative trends which exist today in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and which can be regarded as dangerous.
In the times of the Church Fathers the notion of heresy was related to the false doctrine what became the cause of derogations from the unity of the Church. It was a false tenet about God, hence the Fathers of the Church tried to define not only mistakes created within the Church, but also to develop orthodox doctrine. Due to the vastness of the this subject authors and texts defining heresies were selected. Firstly, attention was drawn on the Greek term a†resij contained in pagan literature and the writings of the New Testament, which allowed to see what was the impact, especially the biblical definition of heresy, on the understanding of the early Christian writers, especially before the first Council of Nice in 325. It was also necessary to ask about the origin of heresy and its characteristics. Fathers affirmed unequivocally that their creation were associated mainly with making the wrong choices. The result of this were incorrect relations of heretics to the truth and to the Church, wrong image of God and abiding in stubbornness. Fathers also attempted to define more precisely the scope of meaning of schism and heresy, which are concepts often used as synonyms.
Modern anti-Semitism, present, although barely seen in Galicia before 1914, triumphed during the time of the Great War. The Habsburgs’ golden age sank into oblivion and, reasonably, the Jews and the Christians’ co-existence. The ethnic nationalism, a phenomenon familiar to any of the new formed states of the Middle-East Europe, especially took a heavy toll in Poland. The war destroyed the base of living of thousands of Jews. What was saved and protected from the war, at the end of the war and during the first months of the Polish independence, was plundered and destroyed by the Christian neighbors. It concerned hundreds of towns, villages and village settlements. At the same time, the war time was the period of development of the social-political and cultural life of the Jews, being a proof forliberation of some part of Jewish inhabitants of the country from long-lasting and supreme orthodoxy’s influence.

Współczesny antysemityzm, obecny, choć ledwo widoczny w Galicji przed 1914 r., zatriumfował w czasie Wielkiej Wojny. Złoty wiek Habsburgów popadł w zapomnienie i, rozsądnie, współistnienie Żydów i chrześcijan. Dotyczyło to setek miast, wsi i osad wiejskich.

The discourse on the human–animal relationship has recently received wider attention in Poland. Periodicals with different ideological backgrounds have taken strong and mutually exclusive positions. This social phenomenon provides an opportunity to apply a novel theoretical approach to sociological analysis. In regard to theory, this paper shows how categories of heresy and orthodoxy can be applied beyond theology. The proposed outline of Christian heresiological discourse is used to indicate aspects worth considering in analyses of the changing relationships between humans and animals. In particular, the focus is on how people present themselves and their doctrine as orthodox while viewing their opponents as heretics holding heretical principles. The empirical analysis covers the special issues on animals published by influential Polish periodicals between 2017 and 2019. These periodicals (Newsweek Polska, Polonia Christiana, and Tygodnik Powszechny) were chosen for their different world-views. The paper demonstrates how relationality, inherent in the heresy–orthodoxy pair of concepts, allows to bring out contradictory narratives regarding the postulated way of perceiving animals and shaping human–animal relationships. The paper provides an in-depth analysis of the present conflicting views and spill-over effects, as well as of the dynamic process of recognising these views as true or false. Considering the heresiological discourse makes it possible to better understand the competition for cultural dominance.
Kwestie zdrowotne w wytycznych kościołów chrześcijańskich w kontekście pandemii wirusa COVID-19: tradycje i innowacje W artykule przeanalizowano wytyczne Kościołów chrześcijańskich dotyczące problemów zdrowia człowieka w sytuacji pandemii COVID-19.

The article examines the guidelines of Christian Churches on human health problems in the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Attention is focused on those Churches that operate in Ukraine and the countries of the Euro-Atlantic circle: the Roman Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Orthodox and Protestant Churches. The documents and practical actions of these Churches, as well as reasoning of their representatives related to this topic are analyzed, in particular: organizing of church life in the conditions of COVID-19, peculiarities of the sacraments, an attitude towards vaccination and more. Orthodox approaches and innovations, which some clergy of different Churches consider incompatible with church doctrine, have been revealed. The innovations discussed concern various forms of online participation in liturgies and other types of church life, administrating of the sacraments, determining whether vaccination against coronavirus is moral, and so on. It is noted that right now and in the near future all Churches will have to clarify and supplement their guidelines according to the challenges of today’s life. And the survival and authority of the Churches among contemporaries and future generations depend on the relevance of the corresponding evolution of church doctrines.
This article examines the moral crisis facing contemporary society with the alienation of European political thought from Christian values; a dictatorship of indifference which is paralleled in the struggles of the Cappadocian Fathers, faced with religious factionalism. Although St Basil and St Athanasius responded to religious matters, political exigency is revealed by the careers of Eusebius of Caesarea and Eusebius of Nicomedia. Similarly, modern religious leaders often fail to address political issues. The Church today requires a unity of faith and needs renewal rather than modernization. Orthodoxy requires greater transparency in accommodating the ethical norms of the Holy Fathers and faces challenges in its organization of pan-Orthodox structures.

Bazyli i św. Atanazy odnoszą się do spraw religijnych, w karierach Euzebiusza z Cezarei i Euzebiusza z Nikomedii ujawnia się polityczny wymiar. Podobnie, współcześni przywódcy religijni zaniedbują odniesienie do zagadnień politycznych. Dzisiejszy Kościół wymaga jedności wiary i potrzebuje raczej odnowy niż modernizacji.

The article discusses the commentary of St. Caesarius of Arles on the Apocalypse of St. John. The bishop of Arles wrote his commentary on the basis of the Ticonius’s study. Due to this fact, the work of Caesarius, which has been saved all in one piece, is an extremely important source of information about the commentary of Ticonius and may be very useful in the process of its reconstruction. The explication of the Apocalypse, written by the Gallic shepherd, is practical. The author tried to make comments on the Apocalypse in the context of the situation of the Church in Gaul. He was more interested in ecclesiological message of St. John’s text rather than in its eschatological message. In consequence, the commentary was very practical and might have been used by priests who had to face such problems as the schism of the Church, rebaptism and relations with heretics.
In the article, the author undertakes an analysis of Alain Besançon’s writings on the Catholic Church and Christianity, focusing on a few selected threads, and shows the apology ad intra and ad extra made by the French researcher. In the first part, he deals with the concept of orthodoxy and reasonable faith. The second part is devoted to the relationship of the Catholic Church to communism and Islam. The basic method of work is analysis, to which selected essays by the French sovietologist are subjected. At the end of the article, the author articulates the most important conclusions. The apology practiced by Alain Besançon is a critical reflection, which means that the French scholar does not so much accept the essential claims presented by the Catholic Church as first asks about their sense, follows the argumentation and provides his own justification. Alain Besançon’s apology is characterized by contextuality, which means that the French researcher, as a world-renowned sovietologist, first of all stands out with his incredible knowledge of totalitarian systems, but also recognizes the context in which Christianity used to be and still exists today. Alain Besançon’s apology takes the form ad intra and ad extra. The French intellectual, asking about the form of the Christian faith or orthodoxy, follows the path inward and makes an apology ad intra, as it were, towards himself. However, when he looks at the world and observes various relations between Christianity and political systems or other religions, he makes an ad extra apology, defends the faith against external threats, formulating an adequate apology

W artykule autor podejmuje analizę pism Alaina Besançona poświęconych Kościołowi katolickiemu i chrześcijaństwu, skupiając się na kilku wybranych wątkach, i ukazuje apologię ad intra i ad extra, jakiej dokonuje francuski badacz. W części pierwszej zajmuje się pojęciem ortodoksji i rozumnej wiary. Część drugą poświęca relacji Kościoła katolickiego do komunizmu i islamu. Apologia Alaina Besançona przyjmuje postać ad intra i ad extra. Francuski intelektualista, pytając o postać wiary chrześcijańskiej czy też ortodoksję, podążą drogą do wnętrza i dokonuje apologii ad intra, niejako wobec samego siebie. Kiedy jednak przygląda się światu i obserwuje rozmaite relacje chrześcijaństwa z systemami politycznymi czy też innymi religiami, dokonuje apologii ad extra, broni wiary przed zewnętrznymi zagrożeniami, formułując adekwatną apologię.
On the grounds of the analysis made by the author of the elaboration one can notice a strong tendency to the relativisation of truth performing in the context of the pluralist theology of religion. Representatives of the aforementioned trend want to question the objective character of truth. Such actions are aimed at leading to the statement that all religions are equally exceptional. To clearly understand the theses of pluralists, philosophical foundations of the pluralist theology of religion have been depicted. It must be stated that pluralists use philosophical notions selectively and instrumentally, which makes it possible to reach desirable conclusions. The contestation of the absolute and objective character of truth has serious consequences and exerts an influence upon the understanding of interreligious dialogue. The problem of resignation from one's own religious identity appears. Defending themselves against such an accusation, pluralists introduce the concept of orthopraxis as the criterion of truth. Consequently, the determinant of truth is its ability to realize itself in the proper demeanour. Views presented in the pluralist theology of religion constitute a serious reproach to Christian truth as well as biblical truth.
