This study examines the effects of ownership concentration and managerial ownership on the profitability and the value of non-financial firms listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) in the context of an emerging market. We measure the firm's performance by Return on Assets (ROA) and Tobin's Q ratios, where the former measures profitability and the latter the value of the firm. In addition, we give detailed information on the main characteristics of the ownership structures of the firms in our sample and find that ownership of Turkish firms is highly concentrated. In addition, the unlisted holding companies have the highest average percentage of shares, which supports the belief that individuals or families establish the holding companies in order to control their listed firms. After controlling for investment intensity, leverage, growth and size, we find that ownership concentration has a significantly positive effect on both firm value and profitability, while managerial ownership has a significantly negative effect on firm value.
Ocena dochodowości 317 banków komercyjnych z Europy Centralnej w latach 2002–2014 z uwzględnieniem rodzaju akcjonariusza oraz poziomów koncentracji zaangażowania kapitałowego udziałowców. Wykorzystano podstawowe statystyki opisowe, parametryczne testy równości wariancji i średnich oraz nieparametryczne, nieliniowe estymatory zależności. Wszystkie obliczenia przeprowadzono w programie StataIC 13. An assessment of profitability of 317 commercial banks from Central Europe in 2002–2014 taking into account the shareholder type and the levels of concentration of shareholders’ equity participation. Basic descriptive statistics and parametric tests for equality of variance and means as well as nonparametric, nonlinear dependence estimators were used. All calculations were carried out in the StataIC 13 programme. On the basis of the conducted analysis, it was shown that the type of dominant owner is significant for the profitability achieved by banks. In terms of degree of ownership concentration, results evidencing a positive relation between equity participation allowing strategic control (50–60%) and profitability achieved by a bank were presented. Changes in ownership structure concentration result in a decrease in profitability. The results are significant for banks’ profitability in the context of future ownership transformations. The study is one of the few addressing banks’ profitability in the context of ownership structure and degree of its concentration as selected elements of corporate governance.

The objective of our study is to investigate whether the ownership structure of a company, including ownership concentration, managerial ownership and the presence of institutional investors, affects accrual earnings management practices. We first modelled discretionary accruals using the modified approach of Jones (1991), and then we built the model describing the relationship between discretionary accruals and elements of ownership structure of companies and control variables, determining regression using the least square method. We provided evidence of negative dependence between the magnitude of accrual earnings management and shareholder concentration. We do not corroborate the relationship between accrual earnings management and managerial ownership. The presence of institutional investors reduces the magnitude of accrual earnings management. We do not provide evidence that the presence of State Treasury affects accrual earnings management. We do not confirm that accrual earnings management is used for meeting or beating earnings benchmarks.
The purpose of this article is to present the results of empirical research on the relationship between a degree of concentration of ownership and control with regularity and amount of dividend payment. Two hypotheses were set. Hypothesis H1 stipulates that companies with a high degree of concentration of ownership and control pay dividends more regularly than other companies. Hypotheses H2 stating that in the companies whose ownership and control are concentrated, we observe the higher dividend payments than in the companies with dispersed ownership. The analysis was conducted on industrial companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in the period between 2010–2015. The results of empirical research confirmed both hypotheses.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań empirycznych nad związkiem stopnia koncentracji własności i kontroli z regularnością i wysokością wypłacanej dywidendy pieniężnej.
Background: The objective of this study is to determine the impact of concentrated leverage and ownership (high levels of control and power) on firm performance in the case of Pakistan’s logistics sector separately in the presence and absence of growth options available to the firm. Both leverage and ownership concentration can have a significant influence on firm performance in either a positive or a negative way. Methods: In the data sample of this study, 141 companies in Pakistan listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange were selected with a study window from 2008 to 2018. The selection criteria for our sample study are based on firms with the highest market capitalization. Using a Panel based regression methodology, Generalized Methods of Estimating Equations are applied, which cover for 1st and 2nd order serial correlation and controls for endogeneity and autocorrelation problems. Results: The overall results indicate that the availability and non-availability of growth options to firms are very important factors in analyzing ownership concentration and debt influence on firm performance. This paper takes growth option availability and non-availability as dummy variables and finds that in the presence of growth options, non-linear relations are found between firm performance and ownership concentration and positive significant relations of debt with firm performance. Whereas, in the absence of growth opportunities, inverse parabola relations are depicted of ownership concentration and firm performance, and negative relations between debt and firm performance. Conclusions: Financial leverage represents a two part structure, negative in the presence of growth options and positive in the absence of growth options. The study demonstrates that high levels of power concentrated in the hands of owners leads to a convergence and entrenchment effect depicting non-linear relations with financial performance in both the availability and non-availability of growth options. Furthermore, the study also revealed that the explanatory power of results with a sales rate of growth (as a growth options measurement proxy) is higher than the Price to Earnings Ratio measurement proxy.

W przypadku istnienia możliwości rozwoju dla firmy, wykryto zależność pomiędzy efektami działalności firmy and pozytywną istotną zależność pomiędzy zadłużeniem a efektami działalności firmy.
The main aim of this article is to verify the research hypothesis stating that in most employee-owned companies the growth in concentration of ownership is accompanied by the decrease in profitability of assets. Empirical studies were conducted among 15 employee-owned companies from Mazowieckie voivodeship, which concluded an agreement with the State Treasury in the years 2000–2004 on the basis of data from the National Court Register. The results indicate that in the studied employee-owned companies the correlation relationship between concentration of ownership and profitability of assets was both positive and negative.

Zasadniczym celem artykułu jest zweryfikowanie hipotezy badawczej, stanowiącej, iż w większości spółek pracowniczych wzrostowi stopnia koncentracji własności towarzyszy spadek poziomu rentowności majątku. Badania empiryczne zostały przeprowadzone wśród 15 spółek pracowniczych z województwa mazowieckiego, które zawarły umowę o oddanie przedsiębiorstwa państwowego do odpłatnego korzystania w latach 2000–2004, w oparciu o dane z Krajowego Rejestru Sądowego. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, iż w badanych spółkach pracowniczych między koncentracją własności a rentownością majątku występowała zarówno dodatnia, jak i ujemna zależność korelacyjna.
