To build the story of the post-pandemic Union, we seek to understand change and its impact on our lives. The year 2020 has eroded faith in a future conceived as a better version of the present. The pandemic has provided the arguments for the assumption that the project of modernity is running out of steam. We now know that we need to slow down, and look for other ways. The EU is trying to read these signs of the times through the Green Deal and the multi-annual budget, which is supposed to be an investment in change. The Community draws strength and oxygen for solidarity from overcoming its own weaknesses. It is moving towards a Union of closer cooperation. It does not only want to equalize differences between the rich and the poor, but also to create a different economic model. It seeks a new role in the world because it knows that it must rely more on itself. Out of this transformation emerges the contemporary European imaginary, a set of perceptions and emotions that guide human actions. They are particularly important for younger generations who have “stopped seeing” Europe. The pedagogical challenge is to explain the contemporary sense of being together. Poland has a chance to make the ongoing changes, including the green transformation, a strong developmental impulse. This is not helped by fostering anti-EU sentiments in the country.

Z pokonywania własnych słabości Wspólnota czerpie siłę i tlen do działań solidarnych.
W artykule zaprezentowano formy funkcjonowania jednostek, społeczeństwa i całej kultury w warunkach płynnej nowoczesności.

Liquid (or late) modernity is the notion describing a group of social phenomena which characterise the civilisation of the turn of the 21st century. The source, from which liquid modernity emerges, is socioeconomic transformations that have taken place in the western culture in the second half of the 20th century – primarily the technological, telecommunication and transport progress. The core of liquid modernity is lack of anchorage (of identity, value, capital) as well as absence of borders (consumption, geopolitical, trade, and communication). Liquid modernity can be seen in the three basic categories: variability, relativity, pluralism. In his article, the author presented the forms of functioning of individuals, the society and the entire culture under the conditions of liquid modernity.
Relację pomiędzy późnym kapitalizmem a zjawiskiem hazardu cechuje szczególne sprzężenie zwrotne. Z drugiej natomiast strony wybrane aspekty późnego kapitalizmu sprawiają, że on sam coraz bardziej przypomina hazard.

The relationship between late capitalism and gambling appears to be a multidimensional connection. On the one hand, late capitalism provides a number of features which support the dynamic development of gambling in the 21st century. The crucial elements are technologisation, globalisation and individualisation. On the other hand, gambling is a metaphor for late capitalism. The basic categories of late capitalism, like dematerialisation, risk or speculation, make it strikingly similar to gambling. They use the same resources, logic and rules. In effect, the analysis of gambling is a useful tool to explore the wider social reality.
This article maps the evolution of moral-panic studies, and in particular its recent developments, which strive to link the sociology of moral panics to social theory informed by the sociology of moral regulation. This new body of literature has not yet been systematically analysed. It emerged–after the initial British contribution and American-Israeli functionalist ‘second wave’–as a response to a perceived deficiency in the conventional model, which commonly conceptualized moral panics as irrational societal reactions to alleged threats. The recent approach explores moral panics as short-term global moral-governance techniques of advanced liberal societies. The author also discusses new lines of inquiry into the ‘productive’ function of moral panics by elaborating Durkheimian insights on moral panics, which are viewed as the claims-making that construct universal interpretations of an antagonistic situation and provide a surface for the inscription of the proponents’ collective identities.

W artykule przeprowadzono krytyczną analizę ewolucji socjologii paniki moralnej, zwłaszcza jej ostatnich przekształceń, które wypracowane zostały w kontekście dyskusji z badaniami nad zarządzaniem ryzykiem i socjologią moralnej regulacji.
This article is an attempt to answer the question about the current condition of Polish society in the context of reflections on the growth of material culture. The author considers the concept of regress of individual culture. The focus was on verifying of the validity of the theorem on the phenomenon of targeting material values. Attention has been paid to numerous transformations in the social structure, and in particular to the change in the nature of social interactions, weakening of social ties, etc. and the phenomenon of individualization of the society as a direction of accomplishing their own aspirations, ambitions.

The article displays the changing paradigm of the poetic word in the era of late modernity. In the current cultural moment of the tech-centric era, the word is not as powerful as it was throughout the earlier humanistic heritage and throughout the colossal achievements of human thought. The change I have accentuated here has initiated a major process of transfiguration of the word (not of its depreciation), the multidirectional implication of which is experienced by today’s culture. This article directs thought towards the postmodern linguistic innovation, the effect of which is cybernetic poetry. It captures the development of the innovatory project of the cybernetic “word”, which has now been challenged by traditional poetry. In regard to this matter, today’s definition of a cybernetic poet was presented, along with the video poetry, tangible and visual digital poetry, audio poetry and hypertext poetry created by the poet. The thoughts included in the text erect a quite an intriguing and appealing idea of a precursory and alternative digital alphabet as a composite of ultra-modern poetry.

The article aimed to reconstruct and describe the biographical learning of an individual who had undergone the process of psychotherapy for adult children of alcoholics. The central category that emerged from the analysis of the fragmentarily presented empirical material, is the issue of reflective identity building. The author, adopting the assumptions of Anthony Giddens’ theory of late modernity and Peter Altheit’s biographical learning, creates a conceptual framework in which he embeds the narrator’s statements collected using narrative interview methods. The fragment of research presented here, carried out in the biographical perspective, allows the author to select a number of features of the process of reconstructing identity in the therapeutic discourse – characteristic of late modernity. The axis that connects these features, additionally connecting biographical learning with therapeutic processes, is reflexivity, which in the form of self-reflexivity is the main driving force of the inner ‘great revolution’ of identity in the narrator’s life.

Knowledge is treated as a consumer goods in the postindustrial society. It has to be utilitarian, innovative, practiced on the verge of risk, and effective. Furthermore, it is to function within the global market of research results exchange. In such a situation, ambivalences and controversies concerning university status, knowledge as a set of goods created at universities, and functions socially assigned to them appear. The topic of the analysis in this paper are modern and postmodern (related to the categories such as: bureaucracy and institutional reflexivity) perspectives of understanding scientific knowledge, accepted criteria of defining its value, and relating the criteria to the institutionally accepted rules of parametrization juxtaposed in this paper with the category of audit culture

The article deals with the relation between Nature and capitalism, using the example of bitcoin currency. Based on the Jussi Parikka geology of media and Jason W. Moore theory, analyzes the multiplicity of cryptocurrency entanglements in the capitalist system. Comprehending Earth as a medium and Nature as a historical mother that both constitutes and limits the capitalist system is based on the concept of anthropocene understood in a specific way. The enormous energy consumption of cryptocurrencies reveals the ideological background of the new technology, which reproduces the values carried by the era of late modernity.

W artykule przedstawione zostaną tylko te wybrane, dotyczące szczególnie społeczeństwa i wiedzy: liberalizacja, sekularyzacja, modernizacja, globalizacja, europeizacja, umasowienie szkolnictwa wyższego i utowarowienie wiedzy.
In the prose Dukla by Andrzej Stasiuk, in the first part of the novel Eine kleine by Artur Daniel Liskowacki and three collections of poems (Kruszywo, Locja and Dzikie lilie) by Andrzej Niewiadomski verbal depictions of peripherality appear. I name them post- -Romantic cartograms, emphasizing in this way their authors’ intention to record interspatial epiphany, which takes place on various interfaces and between various levels and objects. This is both physical territory (Beskid town in case of Stasiuk, Liskowacki’s S – Szczecin/Stettin and eastern and south-eastern province of Poland), as well as the areas arising between words and images used in poetry and prose. The point here is about a status of decentralized artist/wanderer escaping from the limits of uniform self and simultaneously existing on several planes. In this interpretation I use remarks of Charles Taylor, who in Sources of the Self investigated the Romantic epiphany of being in art of the second half of the 19th century and in the 20th century. I place the literary explorations of ambiguous peripherality in the vision of post-Romantic era and epiphany of modernism, at the same time indicating special features of every analyzed conception. It seems that peripheral characters in works of Liskowacki, Niewiadomski and Stasiuk show tendencies to grow dynamically and vanish as well. One may discern there allegories, as understood by Benjamin, who underlined tireless readiness of the „amorphous onenesses” to act as allegories which preserve „the image of beauty on the last day”.
y. The main purpose of this article is an attempt to reconstruct and describe the phenomenon of biographical learning of “good parenting” that emerges from the analysis and interpretation of one of the biographies studied by the author. The concept of “good parenting,” which is one of the few main analytical categories extracted in the course of previous research, will serve the author as an exemplification and a manifestation of biographical learning experienced by adults undergoing psychotherapy (in this case – psychotherapy of people with the ACoA syndrome).

Contemporary society is currently undergoing milestone transformations. Many are the signs that modernity is moving into the background, no longer the dominant form of social order. This phase of decline is connected to numerous problems: a sense of uncertainty, a normative crisis, or, in other words, a state of anomie. The question therefore arises as to what comes next. If anomie is perceived as an illness, then three further scenarios are possible: the end of the world, crisis as a permanent state of aff airs, or a healthy “recovery” which would entail the emergence and stabilization of a new type of society. This article presents all three of these variants: a society scattered across a network form of social order, a social order based upon a new type of community and an order which, on a broad scale, incorporates nonhuman objects within human societies.
This article presents the socio-cultural analysis of love and intimacy, and pairing strategies in a competitive, self-actualising, self-fulfilling culture. In sociological discussion, the field of theoretical as well as empirical analysis is increasingly vast when it comes to reflexive scenarios of close relationships. A recognisable sign of social change under late modernity is individualisation and the associated pluralisation of lifestyles. Compared to relationships once formed based on prestige-genealogical-economic considerations, the space of accepted codes of "being together" today seems to be a chaos. As a result of individuals' attempts to emancipate themselves from the power of morality and social context, the category of "we" becomes increasingly abstract, with partners negotiating "intimate identity packages" according to individual preferences. Rooted in culture, traditional patterns of intimate biography become an individual "project" subject to optimisation, and at the same time a cultural practice governed by market mechanisms, scientific and media discourses, and the latest communication technologies. This article presents research project, whose results have been minded to recognise those areas of functioning of relationships which matter in the context of developing closeness. The conducted research was of an exploratory character and was situated within the strategy of qualitative research. The analysed empirical material comprised 42 individual semi-structured interviews. As the interviews have shown, closeness is a processual, reflective, individualized, and ritualized phenomenon.
