The paper compares Hanna Krall’s reportage and the film adaptation directed by Jan Jakub Kolski. I have analyzed the parabolic elements of their stories. Both the text and the movie are about hiding a Jewish woman during World War II by a Polish married couple in a wardrobe in their flat. I attempt to find out how the sense of the Krall’s reportage becomes ambiguous and unclear, characteristic to the belles-lettres. Kolski adapted the text that was based on another story. I try to analyze how this universalist domain (present in the reportage) was transformed in an artistic way in the movie. The parabolic elements present in the text and in the film make it possible to reveal the cultural archetypes connected to the Holocaust.
The subject of analysis in the article is The Metamorphosis (1915) of Franz Kafka. The author attempts to capture various aspects of the Kafka space phenomenon in the context of the functioning of the wall / ceiling motif in this probably the most famous narrative of world literature. At the same time, the researcher treats Kafka’s work as an unsurpassed pattern of artistic scenery shaping: namely, which plasticity and concrete motifs and spatial relations make a kind of residuum of sublime, symbolic meanings, realizing fully only through the imagination of the recipient, in the course of contemplative reading and accompanying it aesthetic experience. The argument leads to the conclusion that in his parabolic, absurd, full of understatement (and yet surprisingly specific) piece of work, Kafka does not reveal the sense of the story of a hero transformed into an arthropod, but allows us to experience this sense and presage it – as the content of our own lives.

“Miasto Sagena” (“The City of Sagena”), to this day unpublished and unresearched Czesław Miłosz’s novel, is made subject of the paper. On the first plan it is a piece about Vilnius written as a roman à clef. The researcher identifies the real places, events, and figures hidden under the literary façade, as well as presents two layers of meaning, namely the political, to which “Zniewolony umysł” (“The Captive Mind”) is a clear context, and the metaphysical-religious one, in the examination of which she uses “Ziemia Urlo” (“The Land of Urlo”). Miłosz’s novel is analysed as a parable and juxtaposed with the author’s other works to promote a holistic mode of reading.
The article is concerned with a monograph that discusses the presence of symbols and allegories in Cyprian Norwid’s works. It is an important work raising a theme that is fundamental for modern studies of the poet. The studies gathered in the volume try to answer the question if Norwid is more of a continuator of Romantic literature, or rather he predicts literary trends characteristic of the beginning of the 20th century.

An ellipse, parabola and hyperbola are the curve that can be obtained as the plane section of cone; there are characterizations, one of which is by means of the focus and directrix property. The golden ellipse or the golden hyperbola is the curve, which has golden eccentricity.
Autorzy szukający w tamtych czasach punktów odniesienia dla współczesnych problemów, zamiast Wieku Świateł przedstawiali raczej obraz Wieku Mroków – mroków ludzkiej duszy i równie mrocznych wytworów ludzkiego umysłu w wymiarze społecznym i politycznym.

The term “parable” in reference to the 20th century literature is ambiguous. It is used to name the pieces the plot of which generates or transfers a conventional code from tradition, referring to more general meanings, as well as to those in which “the hidden meaning of a ‘pseudohistorical’ piece is its real reference” (Anna Nasiłowska). In the Polish literature after the year 1956 referring to Enlightenment, the parabolic in the first meaning is characteristic of works that recall the tradition of the Western Enlightenment. In some pieces it is allowed to speak of two meanings. Entering into polemics with the utopian thinking of the Enlightenment, they simultaneously turn to its East-European realisations, thus also contain an element of update. However, if the piece’s structure plot is made exclusively of Polish history or literature, then associations with the present dominate. Yet, in works that invoke Polish history as well as in those that offer a rather mental aspect of the Age of Reason, dark colours prevail. Authors who in those times looked for points of reference for present problems, instead of the Age of Enlightenment presented rather a picture of the Age of Darkness—the gloom of human soul and equally gloomy figments of human mind in the social and political dimension.
Even in today’s “postmodern” world, Norwid cannot be reduced to a single formula. He is rather a “constellation,” requiring that readers join the “continual discussion” on issues specific to a given era. His focus is on humanity, which he regards from a dualist perspective that necessitates pursuing a synthesis of matter and spirit under the sign of ethical universalism. Norwid refers to the “cupola of ‘a monologue-that-keeps-parabolizing-itself’” andregards culture as the parable of the world. His original aesthetics of “whiteness” refers, as it were, to the biblical “gentle gust of wind,” which announces God’s presence and indicates the rejection of the Romantic veneration for volcanoes, which he contrasts with the importance of work. This kind of philosophy, developed by Brzozowski, Tischner and John Paul II, has led to the self-limiting revolution of Solidarity in the years 1980-81, and ultimately to the de-legitimization and fall of communism; finally, after the bloody myth of the French Revolution reigned for two hundred years, this philosophy altered the paradigm of historical changes around the world. Norwid elaborated on the industrial-era Romanticism and opposed martyrological messianism, developing the original idea of a “messianism of work,”linking it with a vision of human Church, which “burns through the Globe with conscience.”He would contrast the global church with the parochial “church-turned-living-room.”Human beings count more than institutions, he argued, just like goodness prevails over formal sacraments. With the ultimate goal defined as the resurrection of the world, art becomes a church of work. Norwid embraced an anthropocentric perspective, in which human beings are called upon “to un-make” [od-poczynać] the mistakes of the past, and thus to begin afresh at a whole new level. With his language and style Norwid was constructing a new social stratum: intelligentsia (Łapiński), understanding it as the nation’s copula, i.e. the unifying force of conscienceand the collective consciousness. It would form an interpersonal, horizontal transcendence spanning the length and breadth of societies. The opposite of nation and its culture is “empire” – the root of subjugation – which particularly enslaved Central and Eastern Europe. Of special importance is the clash between Asian civilization and the “Roman” one, i.e. Christianity or Western Europe. However, the poet opposes Slavs to both the Westerners and the Easterners, emphasizing the processualand not the essentialistcharacter of national cultures. The question whether Norwid’s work is fundamentally dialogic or monologic in character continues to divide scholars. However, Norwid is in a way a Master or teacherwho embodies the Other and incarnates Wisdom in his Voice and Gesture. The nature of Wisdom is anthropocentric because man is a priest, although “involuntary / And immature,” which abolishes the distinction between the sacred and the profane. Through his ethical universalism Norwid provides a solution to the Enlightenment crisis of universal reason. Emancipation of the individual should not entail abandoning a sense of belonging, which is something that Norwid’s modernism shares with that of Central Europeans (Ch. Delsol). Understood as the expression of collective desires, cultures shape responsibility and a sense of belonging, at the same time constituting an answer to the crisis of narcissistic individualism characteristic for our times.

Łączył go z wizją Kościoła człowieka, który „przepala glob, Sumieniem”.
