The present article presents the history of now nonexistent Protection of The Most Holy Virgin Mary Uniate parish in Ciotusza in the eighteenth century. The present article is based on abundant primary sources housed in the National Archives in Lublin, especially in the section of Chelm Greek Catholic Consistory, of which parish post-visitation protocols constitute the main part.
EN

Having analyzed post- visit inspection protocols by Chelm Bishops as well as statistical specifications the look, fittings and ancillary equipment of the parish church and its affiliated churches was recounted. As far as possible the look of vicarage and ancillary buildings was introduced as well. Not only was the list of 19 clergy recreated but also the Orthodox church benefice was defined. The other part render the number of worshipers as well as the number of Holy Communion receivers.

The church under the invocation of the Holy Virgin Mary and St James the Apostle, destroyed by the Teutonic Knights in 1331, was soon reconstructed, most likely in a wooden version. Consecrated in 1335, the church existed in this form for over a century, until it was replaced in 1438–1448 by a church built of brick. In 1451 it was decorated with paintings by Jan of Wrocław. In 1551, Rev. Rafał Wargawsk covered the church with roof at his own expense. The 17th century was a period when Szadek was governed by starosts of the Wierzbowski family (coat of arms Jastrzębiec), who treated the church as family necropolis. Lack of repair and conservation caused considerable destruction of the church building. Restoration work was undertaken by Rev. Michał Zdzieniecki in 1788. The year 1802 brought a disaster – a fire destroyed the roof and the tower, only the walls and vaulting remained. A temporary shingle roof prevented a complete destruction of the building. The restoration which took place in 1868 changed the architectural appearance of the church building. Successive repair and restoration works were carried out in 1923–1924 and 1969–1971, but they did not change the outer appearance of the church.

The article presents archival, archaeological and architectural survey of the parish church in Ludanice. The research was performed here concurrently with a total renewal of the building between 1998 and 2010, however for various reasons the research could have only partial character. Despite his limited extent, the study offers a complex view of the sacral building’s history, which had its origins likely in the late Roman period. Apart from architecture, the article analyses the church cemetery, the original title of the church – St. Demetrius and the beginnings of the nearby village centre settlement.

According to the findings of the research into the history of St. Mary’s Church in Gdańsk, in its eastern part, behind the main altar, three liturgical centres operated in the Middle Ages: the Chapels of the Holy Sepulchre and of St. Bartholomew, which divided the wide architectural space on the axis of the temple, as well as the Chapel of St. Hedwig, located to the south of them. In the latter, a set of wall paintings and a reredos have survived to the present day, the aspects of which have been analysed mainly in relation to the scanty information on the history of this chapel. The example of the decoration of a chapel referred to as ‘Chapel of St. Hedwig’ shows how important, from the point of view of historical and artistic research, it is to use written sources, both those contemporary to the created works of art, and those from a later period. An in-depth analysis of various source materials related to the history of the chapels mentioned above, especially documents related to the Chapel of St. Bartholomew, founded in 1451, has made it possible to establish that in fact there were formerly only two chapels behind the main altar: The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre (later also called the Chapel of St. Gertrude) and – on the southern side – the Chapel of St. Bartholomew, which as early as at the beginning of the 16th century was commonly referred to as the Chapel of St. Hedwig. Putting this issue in order will make it easier to analyse the objects found in the Chapel of St. Bartholomew/Hedwig in a more comprehensive manner – as a group of works that are the effect of a more uniform concept, and it will enable a more precise dating of the works, which in turn may serve as a starting point for further research into the artistic environment of mid-15th century Gdańsk.

The publication contains an edition of a Medieval document concerning mass chantry for the parish church of Pszczew and its stipend. The document has so far been known solely on account of its copy. The original kept in the State Archives in Zielona Góra. It is a donation privilege that expands and solidifies the asset base of the Pszczew parish church and its parson. Decisions discussed in it could be linked with the former appointment of regional officiality in Pszczew. Furthermore, it carries precious information regarding the Pszczew Vogts (advocate mayor) and the town topography. The document was issued in Poznań on July 5, 1446. The bishop of Poznań, Andrzej of Bnin, instituted a morning Mass stipend in the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the parish church in Pszczew and confirmed and enlarged the benefit of the Pszczew’s parish.

The library of the parish church in Szadek - being the seat of Szadek Decanate and belonging in 1818 to Gniezno Archdiocese - was referred to, with listings of all the books that it contained, in parish documents (canonical Visitations of the parish) of 1762, 1779 and 1788. It was mainly used by local priests. After less than half a century of existence, it was destroyed, probably in a church fire in 1802. The registers list some 35 books, most likely in printed form. The themes of this collection of books point to it being the property of one of the parish priests, donated after his death to the parish. Nearly half of the books are works useful in preaching: collections of sermons and examples. The remaining publications, too, are intended to help priests in their pastoral work, religious instruction and preaching. Among Polish parish libraries of the 18th century, this collection falls within the category of small libraries (1-50 books).

In the parish church in Czemierniki, in the main altar, there is a large painting of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception by Antoni Michalak. The initiator of the painting was the then administrator of the parish, Fr. Józef Kuniec, who corresponded with the Artistic Commission at the Bishop’s Curia in Lublin. The commission chose not only the artist–painter, i.e. Antoni Michalak, but also chose the design of the painting which, since 1952, has been decorating the main altar of the temple. The artist was one of the members of the Fraternity of St. Lucas, characterizing by a reference to traditional painting, historical painting and religious themes. For these reasons, it was recommended by the Episcopal Curia to the parish priests of the Lublin diocese and the artist’s works can be found in many museums, churches and private galleries.

The origins of the parish in Zemborzyce, which was probably created soon after the foundation of the village, dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. In 1748, the parish of Zemborzyce consisted of six villages: Zemborzyce, Krężnica (a branch), Trzeszkowice, Osmolice, Prawiedniki and Żabia Wola. It was inhabited by approximately 2,000 faithful. In the parish there was a hospital, which was located in an old building. The parish endowment included arable land, a garden, the right to fish on the River Bystrzyca, a brewery and a taberna with propination laws. In 1779, a new presbytery was built. The outbuildings included: a farm house, a granary, a stable, a cowshed, a barn, a shed for oxen, small stables and pigsties. At the church square there was also a building for an organist. In 1784, a new hospital was built. In 1849, the buildings at the church, apart from the presbytery, included: a servants' house, a curate’s house, a hospital, an inn and the following outbuildings: a stable, a coach house, a granary, a cowshed and a spacious barn. None of these buildings has survived until the present day. The wooden church of Zemborzyce was built in 1717, in place of the previous one. It was renovated several times. It was located to the east of the present church, at the former main road through the village, running over the River Bystrzyca. After constructing the brick church, which exists today, the old church was moved to Motycze near Lublin in 1918. The  neo-Gothic brick church, which survived to the present day, was built in 1906-1907. It was designed by the architect of Radom, Augusta Załuski.
