Pathological gambling is one of the addictions that is widespread in our society, but despite its seriousness, it does not receive sufficient attention. The economic consequences of pathological gambling are comparable to other addictions, although in the overall context, their economic impact is much greater. The social consequences of pathological gambling are even greater than in case of other addictions, as pathological gamblers mostly have a family, and because of their dependence, their family often becomes dysfunctional, with all the related consequences. There exist several effective treatment approaches to treat pathological gambling, as in the case of substance dependencies. For an understanding of pathological behaviour in online games and digital games, it is also necessary to understand the development of related phenomenon – pathological gambling. The aim of this article is to briefly describe pathological gambling and co-dependence.

Gambling is now a popular lawful activity among people around the world. Due to recent changes of legal regulations concerning gambling, access to gambling has become more widespread and, as a result, an increase in the prevalence of pathological gambling has been noted. Therefore, an urgent need for better understanding of the phenomenon of pathological gambling among health-care specialists becomes evident. In this field, such concepts as compulsive, pathological or problem gambling are often treated synonymously. Pathological gambling is a complex phenomenon. Traditionally, the definitions of gambling have been constructed basing on the assumptions of economic or social repercussions rather than taking into account the process or phenomenon of gambling itself. However, clinicians focusing on negative consequences of the gambling behavior, developed typologies and worked out the definitions that may prove beneficial for more adequate operationalizing this concept. A critical review of the literature showed that familial/genetic, sociological/demographics (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity, forms of gambling), individual (e.g. an individual's personality, biochemistry, cognitions, and psychological states) and religion/spirituality factors may be implicated in the development and maintenance of pathological gambling.

Objective: The objective was to  adapt the American pathological gambling screening tool /SOGS-RA The South Oaks Gambling Screen - Revised for Adolescent/ by K. Winters, R. Stinchfield and J. Fulkerson (1993) and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Method: The adapted tool was used in research on a randomly selected sample of 2,617 adolescents aged 13-20 years in the 2012/2013 school year. Results: On the SOGS-RA scale, 2.6% of the trial participants achieved a score indicating past year problem gambling before the survey, 4.1% were classified as problem gamblers, whereas 17.3% of adolescents engaged in social gambling that did not pose a problem gambling risk at the time. The SOGS-RA demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.78). Conclusions: The Polish adaptation of the SOGS-RA scale is reliable and accurate, which is why it is worth recommending it for use in further research on Polish adolescents.

The article discusses the forms of aiding families with the pathological gambling problem that are available in Poland as well as the example of the Canadian program. Among others, the results are presented of studies conducted in 2011 and 2012 that aimed at making a diagnosis of the aid resources for the gambling problem in Poland. In the studies 801 institutions took part that conduct therapy of addictions. Among them 120 declared that they offer aid to families affected by pathological gambling. In the forms of aid individual therapy, counseling and education dominate. Less than half of the institutions have a therapeutic program worked out for pathological gamblers, and the remaining institutions conduct therapy according to programs prepared for people addicted to psychoactive substances. Addiction therapists say there is a great need of improving their qualifications in the sphere of supporting people with behavioral addiction – including pathological gambling.
