The policy of interethnic reconciliation characterizes postwar history of the 20th century and underlies the Euro integration process. The achievement of interethnic reconciliation is considered to be an important element of maintenance of stability and security in the modern world. Working out of this matter is characteristic feature of present state of science, public conscience guided by respect for universal values, European integration and globalization. Although the process is very significant there’s no definition of this matter in majority of encyclopedias and dictionaries that was caused by a relative novelty of the discipline of the peace studies. Interethnic reconciliation is a necessary component of successful peace building that can be encouraged by state structures but should be carried out through institutions of civil society and that consists in lasting transition process from negative (unstable, fragile) peace to positive one (just, lasting and enduring peace), in establishment of reciprocal dialogue, in consent and acceptance of peace settlement terms, in deep reconsideration of bilateral relations, a renunciation of revanche, overcoming of historical myths and negative stereotypes, mutual forgiveness, peace culture education, working out of cooperation projects and having for an object elimination of reasons being at the bottom of confrontation as well as prevention of recurring conflicts. Completion of formation of nations, democratic regime and community of civilizational values are important preconditions for the achievement of interethnic reconciliation.

Resolving conflicts and achieving durable peace is one of the main goals of the United Nations (UN). For many years the UN has been engaged in peace building efforts. Until the creation of the Peace Building Commission in 2006, however, no part of the UN system had been directly responsible for assistance to States in the post-conflict reality or in the efforts aimed at achieving durable peace. The Peace Building Commission managed to fill in this vacuum through systematic and institutional links between peace keeping, post-conflict operations and international network of assistance as well as activities undertaken by donors, including the World Bank. The aim of this article is to present the functioning of the UN Peace Building Commission: its rules of procedure, composition and the tasks is has been given. First, the normative aspect will be delineated, followed by brief characteristics of concrete cases in which the Commission has been engaged. Based on that analysis, the question whether the work of the Commission has been a success of a failure will be examined and an attempt will be made to determine factors that condition effective work of the Peace Building Commission.

Rozwiązywanie konfliktów i dążenie do ustanowienia trwałego pokoju jest jednym z nadrzędnych celów Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych. Przez lata angażowała się ona w działalność na rzecz budowania pokoju. Do chwili powstania Komisji Budowania Pokoju w 2006 r. żadna część systemu ONZ nie była bezpośrednio odpowiedzialna za pomoc krajom w okresie pokonfliktowym i w dążeniach do budowania trwałego pokoju. Komisja Budowania Pokoju pozwoliła wypełnić tę lukę przez zapewnienie instytucjonalnego i systematycznego połączenia między utrzymywaniem pokoju, operacjami pokonfliktowymi oraz międzynarodową siecią pomocy i działaniami darczyńców, w tym Banku Światowego. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie funkcjonowania Komisji Budowania Pokoju: zasady jej działania, skład oraz zadania jej postawione. Po przedstawieniu strony normatywnej pokrótce opisano konkretne przypadki zaangażowania Komisji. Podjęto też próbę odpowiedzi na tytułowe pytanie – czy działalność Komisji to sukces czy porażka oraz jakie czynniki mają wpływ na sprawne i skuteczne działanie Komisji Budowania Pokoju.

In the world that seeks and promotes self-expression based on an exaggerated concept of freedom there is always the risk of a clash of interests. It happens in particular when a person formulates for himself something that he considers moral and true without reference to any objective truth. Leaning from some regrettable events in history, this article examines the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria amidst the rampant ethno-religious conflicts. It looks at some political, religious, economic factors influencing this menace. It also highlights the influence of modern culture of individualism and dissemination of information devoid of ethics. With the help of both ecclesiastical and secular documents this article offers suggestions that might lead to a sincere dialogue as means to peaceful coexistence. Responsible roles of individuals and institutions are indispensable if we want to restore human dignity that has been debased.

W świecie, który szuka i promuje wyrażanie siebie oparte na przesadnej koncepcji wolności, zawsze istnieje ryzyko zderzenia interesów. Dzieje się tak, kiedy człowiek tworzy dla siebie to, co uważa za moralne i prawdziwe, bez odniesienia do jakiejkolwiek obiektywnej prawdy. Opierając się na godnych pożałowania wydarzeniach w historii, artykuł analizuje relacje między muzułmanami a chrześcijanami w Nigerii pośród szerzących się konfliktów etno-religijnych. Zwraca uwagę na niektóre czynniki polityczne, religijne i ekonomiczne wpływające na to zagrożenie. Podkreśla także wpływ współczesnej kultury indywidualizmu i rozpowszechniania informacji pozbawionych etyki. Z pomocą zarówno dokumentów kościelnych, jak i świeckich artykuł ten przedstawia sugestie, które mogą prowadzić do szczerego dialogu jako środka do pokojowego współistnienia. Niezbędna jest odpowiedzialna rola jednostek i instytucji, jeśli musimy przywrócić godność ludzką, która doznała uszczerbku.
