Philosophical Personalistic Reflection on the Body as a Contribution to Theology

The article explores how Personalist Philosophy can be helpful for Theology by focusing on the concrete topic of the body. The renewed philosophical interest in the body is important for Christian Theology inasmuch as the latter is centered on the concreteness of the Incarnation. The article follows Gabriel Marcel’s approach as a guideline to review the understanding of the body proper to Personalism. In this approach, the body is seen as the person’s relational presence in the world and among others and as the openness of the person towards transcendence. The richness of this approach is explored in three important areas of dogmatic theology: Christology, Sacramentology, and the Theology of Creation. The article exemplifies the circularity between Philosophy and Theology in the concrete topic of the body.

This article forms a part of Rev. Prof. Marian Kurdziałek’s lecture devoted to the pre-Thomist conceptions od philosophy-theology relationship. More precisely, this article is a reconstruction of the Prof. Kurdziałek ‘s discussion of the relevant ideas in St. Augustine’s thought. To begin with, Kurdziałek presents St. Augustine’s holistic understanding of philosophy and theology as essentially one and the same endeavor, a way leading to beatitude. He goes on to illustrate this thesis with a number of quotes, chiefly from Augustine’s philosophical dialogues, but also from his later writings. Kurdziałek then proceeds to discuss the place of ethical knowledge in Augustine’s theology and the relationship of cosmology and theology in thought of the bishop of Hippo. The lecture is concluded by a presentation of Augustine’s psychology, again conceived as a starting point of a spiritual itinerary, one of the ways ultimately leading to God.

The eight-hundredth anniversary of the Great Poet's death is the occasion of this study, which presents the souls of the twelve scholars immortalised by Dante in the fourth heaven. Approaching such personalities, we note the diverse cultural forms that have marked history and continue to illuminate it with the wisdom of their works. From this insight springs a hymn in honour of the culture that also shines brightly in Dante's poetry.

Osiemsetna rocznica śmierci Wielkiego Poety leży u początków tego studium, które przedstawia dusze dwunastu uczonych uwiecznionych przez Dantego w czwartym niebie. Zbliżając się do takich osobistości, zauważamy różnorodne formy kultury, które naznaczyły historię i nadal rozświetlają ją mądrością ich dzieł. Z tego spostrzeżenia wypływa hymn na cześć kultury, która jaśnieje również w poezji Dantego.

Artykuł ukazuje, w jaki sposób filozofia personalistyczna może być pomocna dla teologii poprzez swoją koncentrację na temacie ludzkiego ciała. Zainteresowanie współczesnej filozofii ciałem jest dla teologii chrześcijańskiej ważne o tyle, że ta ostatnia koncentruje się przecież na misterium wcielenia. Artykuł podąża za myślą Gabriela Marcela, by ukazać charakterystyczną dla personalizmu interpretację ludzkiej cielesności. W tym podejściu ciało jest widziane jako relacyjna obecność w świecie i pośród innych ludzi oraz jako otwarcie osoby na transcendencję. Bogactwo tej perspektywy zostaje ukazane w artykule na trzech płaszczyznach teologii dogmatycznej: chrystologicznej, sakramentologicznej i protologicznej. Tym samym dowiedziona zostaje korelacja pomiędzy myślą filozoficzną a teologiczną w podejściu do tematu ciała.
