This study investigates the nature of phonological impairment in 20 pre- and early school Portuguese children with phonologically based Speech Sound Disorders (SSD). The phonological profile of these children was compared with the performance of 232 younger typically developing (TD) controls. Results showed differences in phonological acquisition of children with phonologically based SSD, namely a low percentage of correct consonants score and a higher percentage of occurrences of typical phonological processes. Children with phonologically based SSD also used phonological processes (e.g., backing and initial consonant deletion) that are considered unusual in normally developing children and were not observed in the TD group. Results for SSD children also showed that early acquisition consonants were substituted by later acquisitions. Children with SSD presented differences in phonological acquisition, unusual phonological processes, and replaced early acquisition consonants by later acquisition consonants. This knowledge is useful for speech and language therapists in the diagnosis and treatment of SSD.

The present contribution is concerned with a pilot study of empirical issues in the analysis of speech and language impairments in the speech of a sample of Arabic-speaking Jordanian children. The study aims at developing diagnostic tools for assessing the developmental status of the phonological processes in the child's disordered speech based on the chronology of their development in normally developing children. It also aims at providing a sound linguistic basis for this development. The theoretical linguistic basis for the study is taken from Natural Phonology (NP) and Phonology as Human Behaviour (PHB). Additionally, one of the theoretical goals is to provide further external evidence for developing the NP theory. The results of this study confirm, on one hand, some of the common patterns that are reported in the literature concerning phonological disorders language-universally, and on the other hand, they show some Arabic language specific features as well.

Artykuł przedstawia procedurę BID (ang. briefing, interaction, debriefing) jako użyteczne narzędzie dla logopedów, którzy stykają się z problematyką prawidłowej diagnozy podsystemów i sprawności językowych u dwujęzycznych dzieci. Przykładem wykorzystania BID jest ocena procesów fonologicznych u dzieci reprezentujących dwujęzyczność ukraińsko-polską. Dzięki procedurze BID udało się przeprowadzić dwujęzyczną diagnozę i spośród zebranych danych wyodrębnić procesy rozwojowe, interferencje oraz procesy nietypowe. Niniejszy tekst podkreśla również współpracę logopedy z interpretatorem, czyli neofilologiem języka ukraińskiego, umożliwiającym dokonanie interpretacji zebranych dwujęzycznych danych językowych.

This article presents the BID (briefing, interaction, debriefing) procedure as a useful tool for speech therapists who face the problem of correct diagnosis of language subsystems and abilities in bilingual children. An example of the BID’s application is the assessment of phonological processes in children representing Ukrainian-Polish bilingualism. Using the BID procedure, it was possible to conduct a bilingual diagnosis and to extract developmental processes, interference, and atypical processes from the collected data. This article also highlights the cooperation of a speech therapist with an interpreter, i.e. a neophilologist of the Ukrainian language, who makes it possible to interpret the collected bilingual linguistic data.
