Do najważniejszych z nich należą: koncentracja na rolach społecznych związanych z płcią w przypadku polskiego podręcznika i niska pozycja dzieci w hierarchii rodzinnej w przypadku podręcznika fińskiego.

Course books are described as one of the important sources for the transmission of the dominant discursive structures. The article analyses the discursive construction of family in course books for learners of Polish and Finnish as foreign languages. We conduct our analysis from the perspective of the Discourse-Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis with the use of qualitative methods. The revealed discourses show some similarities but also differences in the discursive construction of family in the two countries. The most prominent differences include the concentration on gender roles in the family in the case of the Polish course book and the low position of children in the family hierarchy in the Finnish course book.
Enriching the knowledge on culture seems to be a logical consequence of the development of intercultural communication competence. The aim of this article is to evaluate cultural content embedded in selected textbooks used in foreign language courses. The textbooks were analysed by means of a questionnaire based on Hofstede model and CEF guidelines.
The article aims to describe the phenomenon of the so-called „winged words” as they are presented in textbooks used for teaching Polish as a foreign language. In the text we have analyzed 13 textbooks. The purpose of the research was to answer two main questions. Firstly, what functions do the winged words perform in a given resource and what position do they occupy? Secondly, does the reception of an exercise by a student require understanding of a winged word used in the exercise? The winged words used by the textbooks’ authors fall into a few categories. They appear in the books’ titles, chapters’ titles and authentic texts, as well as in exercises: lexical, phraseological and grammatical ones (where they can be used based on their semantics or without focusing on it). Another classification includes cases where the proper understanding of an exercise depends on the prior knowledge of a winged word and those where it is not obligatory.

Orthodox education and printing developed in the Kyiv Metropolitanate in the second half of the 16th century. Educational centers that were established at that time needed educated human resources and books that could become the basis of education. At that time the role of a textbook played Church books (psalters, orologions, oktoechos), which became multifunctional already in the Middle Ages and also first printed primers and grammars, containing carefully selected excerpts, e.g. from Holy Scripture and other religious books. The analysis of the pedagogical content that accompanied the editions of school and church books in the form of a paratext shows that the first stage of educating children, as in old Christian times, involved the transfer of knowledge and skills, and at the same time – shaping of piety. Therefore, most of the comments in the form of preface, letters of dedication and other additional elements were addressed to educators, parents, mainly fathers, and served as a guide through the book, indicating the material contained therein, its function, purpose, use (e.g. order of books) and possible impact on young student.
The aim of the article is to present an analysis of the assessment of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in conventional textbooks for teaching English. After presenting the theoretical framework of the new core curriculum in terms of autonomy and ICT application, the study describes the way in which ICT tools are integrated or ignored in current English textbooks. The study covered textbooks used in the seventh grade of primary school. Six of the eight (one per publisher) textbooks available on the market were selected for this purpose. Qualitative research comprised a thorough evaluation of tasks which comprised explicit references to ICT. The quality of the analysed didactic materials was determined by the potential level of supporting students’ autonomy by using the coursebook tasks in question, measured through a specially designed Likert scale. The conclusions served to propose changes and improvements to these textbooks.
One of the most famous Polish post-war Roman law textbooks is the publication written by Kazimierz Kolańczyk. The first edition of the “Prawo rzymskie” [Roman law] textbook appeared in print in 1973. During the course of nearly fifty years since then, 6 different editions of this work have been printed. Furthermore, it still enjoys significant popularity as a text used in the course of Roman law education even now, in the 3rd decade of the 21st century. The reasons behind the unquestionable success of this textbook can be noted already in its creation. For this very reason, the concept presented by the author of this work, the circumstances connected with its creation, and the reception of the first edition all seem extremely interesting.

The article is an announcement of a PhD dissertation which will discuss the current genre pattern of a handbook for teaching Polish as a foreign language, a set of variants and paradoxes of this pattern and the direction of the latest changes / intraspecific tendencies including their causes. The article refers to Maria Wojtak’s concepts related to genre analysis and selected Joanna Nocoń’s views on the analysis of the school textbook as a didactic genre. The article primarily discusses four analytical aspects that were used during the analysis of textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language: stylo-linguistic, structural, pragmatic and cognitive.

Praca zawiera przede wszystkim omówienie czterech aspektów analitycznych, którymi kierowano się podczas analizy genologicznej podręczników do nauczania jpjo: stylowojęzykowego, strukturalnego, pragmatycznego i poznawczego.

The starting point is the statement that in teaching a foreign language, the primary aim is to develop the pragmatic and communicative competence which, among others, signifies the ability to construct correct utterances that are adequate for the situation, as well as for other participants of social interaction. The present article aims at discussing the aspects of pragmatic functioning of the Portuguese language, that is the act of request in Portuguese as a Foreign Language student’s book Português XXI 1. On the basis of the gathered corpus, we will observe which politeness strategies of the act of request were used in the student’s book discussed. At the end of our considerations, we will propose some exercises which suggest more productive pragmatic forms.
The main aim of the article is to direct attention towards the specific educational needs of elderly people who are learning a foreign language. One of the main points of this paper is to describe seniors and present biological, psychological, cultural and social factors that affect their SLA (Second Language Acquisition) process. Course books used for the process of learning Polish as a foreign language have also been analyzed on the basis of their usefulness for seniors. The analysis of the course books was conducted on the basis of specially prepared criteria for the evaluation of language teaching materials.
Następnie na wniosek MEN podręcznik ten poddany zostaje ogólnonarodowemu poprawianiu zawartych w nim błędów, a potem z tryumfem złożony do druku.

For many years, textbooks have been a source of much controversy, but what has been unfolding in this area since the beginning of 2014 can quite fairly be described as a proper storm, or even a revolution. While scientists and pedagogical researchers have continued their discussions about the cultural and social norms relevant to children’s books (where these in turn are bound to prompt problematic discussions about meaning and value), the Ministry of Education has simply gone ahead and introduced a single textbook for children from Class I, which is apparently free, but obligatory for all of them. This has been created on the basis of vague and undefined conceptual assumptions, and in record time. Then, at the request of the Ministry, this same textbook has been subjected to a nationwide process of correction of the errors it contained, before being finally sent for printing – and this as if it marked a great triumph. How might one sum this up in a single word? For me, it is manipulation. This article aims to justify the following two main theses: that the above-mentioned textbook has become an object of manipulation (for both politicians and the media), and that it was, and is, a tool of manipulation (in the context of education and teaching). The term “manipulation”, of course, has many meanings. It is used in this article to refer to what goes on when someone is unknowingly targeting and exploited for specific purposes. We, and especially teachers and the parents of pupils, need to become aware of the possibility of being victims of this. On the other hand, scientific research into the usefulness of teaching materials in the education of children offers a chance for us to defend ourselves against such manipulation.
In the course of early-school education, young pupils’ capacity to express themselves provides a basis for building contacts with their social surroundings, exploring the world, and forming their own outlook. The ability to express one’s own thoughts is quite rightly thought to merit intensive educational input, aimed at nurturing it wherever possible. Participating in school lessons in various situations that involve practical language use, children of early-school age have a chance to discover the attributes of language itself: they learn and build concepts, discover the meanings of basic parts of speech, and uncover the sense of specific utterances. Language education should therefore be a priority in Polish schools, and a teacher of Classes I–III, engaged in organizing their education, should possess a variety didactic tools that will help to make it more appealing. One of these, obligatory and ever-present in Polish schools today, is the textbook. However, it is worth considering whether the textbooks used by teachers of Classes I–III include suggestions that would be relevant to a creatively oriented approach to Polish language education. To what extent are schoolchildren able to participate in various communicative situations while relying on their own creatively constructed utterances? The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the problems of language education of children in Classes I–III, using the findings of selected authors as its basis. In this context, the textbooks used in early-school education are analysed with respect to questions, instructions and exercises for children. Some educationally misguided approaches to working with children, on the part of teachers of Polish language classes, are indicated. However, using the current literature as a basis, the paper also points to some ideas that could be of value in this respect.

The article refers to a collection of handbooks and guides for creative writing – both written by Polish authors and available in translations from English. The author reflects on the publishing conditions and the practices of publishers. In the main part of the article, he tries to reconstruct the figure of an advisor (instructor) in matters of creative writing. It presents the most common author’s strategies, and also reports on the circumstances in which the guidebooks were created.

The subject of the text is an attempt to show professor B. Chrząstowska’s many years of active participation in the discussion on the language of school humanities and thus the role of the Mistress from Poznań in creating the humanistic reality of Polish hours. It is achieved by showing the evolution of the shape of Applied Poetics by S. Wysłouch and B. Chrząstowska in the context of the literary text - poetics - ethics - world of values - student relationship. A chronological perspective was adopted in the review of subsequent versions of the textbook. Based on the preface and analyzing the author's corrections declared there, which are reflected in the substantive content and composition, expressed in the table of contents, thought-composition dominants were distinguished, organizing the content of individual versions of the book, which to this day is a fundamental position in the libraries of Polish language teachers, being at the same time a trace of changes taking place in thinking about the ways of reading literature in school and their strict dependence on the dominant literary methodologies.

In the article, I discuss the presentation, representations and images of ethnic and cultural diversity in government-approved early school education textbooks over the last twenty years, with the focus on the currently used ones. My argument is based on the initial results of a research study launched in 2017. The study mainly involves analyses and interpretations of the textbooks and the empirical data from informal interviews with teachers, librarians, students, and booksellers, as well as from ethnographic observations in school libraries, bookstores etc. This ethnographic research strategy, which makes room for the voice of Others, has helped me explore the product that is a textbook in a wider perspective. In this framework, the textbook is a cultural artefact and at the same time a factor in students’ enculturation which can be analysed and interpreted from anthropological positions.

Obejmują one w głównej mierze analizy podręczników i towarzyszących im ćwiczeń, dopełnione materiałem empirycznym pochodzącym z wywiadów o charakterze nieformalnym, prowadzonych z nauczycielami, bibliotekarzami, księgarzami, studentami i pracownikami wrocławskich hurtowni książek oraz z obserwacji etnograficznych.
In the literature on foreign language teaching Franciszek Kuszel appears sporadically as the author of a Polish-English phrasebook entitled Rozmowy podręczne dla podróżujących do Londynu Polaków nieumiejących zupełnie Języka Angielskiego (1857). There are also other extant materials: “Książka Podręczna do Uczenia się Języka Angielskiego dla Uczniów Szkoły Główney w Warszawie” [1864], written for English instruction at the Szkoła Główna Warszawska and reproduced by means of the lithographic method, and “Dziennik czynności osobistych od dnia 25 września 1834”, a manuscript source of biographical information. This article has two main purposes: to sketch the biography of the author and take his textbook under a scrutiny.

The article characterizes the lexis of 3 textbooks to teach Polish, dedicated to francophone users, published at the beginning of the 20th century. The objective of the philological analysis conducted in the context of historical glottodidactics was: to indicate the regularity between the applied grammar-translation method and the kind of taught lexis and to characterise vocabulary in the lexicological perspective. It concluded that: (1) despite the subordination of the teaching lexis to a grammatical description, the process is carried out with methods of developing lexical competence used in contemporary glottodidactics (lexical-thematic fields, semantic relationships units with an ethnolinguistic charge), (2) old textbooks can be a valuable resource for research in historical linguistics, especially in the cultural aspect.
