Model grawitacyjny w handlu zagranicznym: wybrane aspekty teoretyczne i metodyczne

Celem artykułu jest omówienie podstaw teoretycznych stosowania równania grawitacji w ekonomii oraz wskazanie najważniejszych problemów związanych z konstrukcją modeli, w tym z doborem zmiennych modelowych i metod estymacji. W artykule zastosowano metodę desk research obejmującą analizę artykułów naukowych na dany temat. Koncepcja zastosowania modelu grawitacji w badaniach handlu zagranicznego, przedstawiona przez Tinbergena w latach 60. XX wieku poprzez analogię do fizyki, była przez wiele lat krytykowana za niewystarczające podstawy teoretyczne. Od tamtego czasu model grawitacji zyskał silną podbudowę teoretyczną. Obecnie model grawitacji jest ważnym empirycznym narzędziem, które pomaga zrozumieć zjawiska gospodarcze zachodzące między dwoma krajami. Pierwotnie używane do wyjaśnienia przepływów handlowych, znajduje zastosowanie także w innych obszarach badań, w tym do oszacowania przepływów kapitałowych (FDI) czy też ruchów migracyjnych.

The aim of the article is to discuss the theoretical foundations of applying the equation of gravity in economics and to identify the most important problems related to the construction of models, including the selection of model variables and estimation methods. The concept of using the gravity model in foreign trade research presented by Tinbergen in the 1960s by analogy to physics has been criticized for many years for insufficient theoretical foundations. Since then, the gravity model has gained a strong theoretical foundation. Currently, the gravity model is an important empirical tool that helps to understand the economic phenomena occurring between the two countries. Originally used to explain trade flows, it is also applied in other areas of research, including the estimation of capital flows (FDI) or migration movements.
