Interview with poet and headmaster of Mikolowski Institute Maciej Melecki made by Justyna Czechowska about poetry.
EN
Tina Stroheker, born in 1948, is a writer which separates her political activity from her writing activity. She writes poetry as well as prose. However, the writer attributes a calming effect to the lyric verse. Stroheker separates her poems from the political watchwords. She also tries not to show the presence of political watchwords „between the lines“ of her works. The lyric verse for her is a way of thinking about different problems, a way of fi nding her feet in reality. This is why the writer brings up natural, human problems in her poems. At the same time Stroheker works on the single words in her poems, until she catches the, in her opinion, proper sense of the discussed problems. This article, based on the work Aufenthalt, tries to show the attitude of Stroheker towards the poetry and prose. The texts published in Aufenthalt have not been published yet. This is why they can give the reader the opportunity to discover the writer anew. The literary theorists rate her among traditionalists, who are under the influence of the generation born before World War II. However in her comments Stroheker stresses her interest in the interdisciplinary, acoustic and visual in the poem and also the landmark drifts in the lyric verse, which brings her closer to the young generation born after the Second World War.

The subject of this article is the forgotten works of August Antoni Jakubowski, The Exile’s Song and It is weary, discovered on the last pages of a rare 1835 edition of The Remembrances from Auburn. After the November Uprising, Jakubowski, an illegitimate son of Antoni Malczewski, was sent to America, where he became the author of The Remembrances of a Polish Exile– – the first publication about Polish history, literature, and education written in English and published in the United States. So far, Jakubowski’s short life (ended by suicide), torn between two continents, is shrouded in more mysteries and secrets than confirmed facts. Much has been verified through the research of Przemysław Bloch, a New York-based lawyer, together with the author of this article in the United States. The Exile’s Song and It is weary complete the picture of the last American stage of Jakubowski’s work. They are a concentrated expression of all his characteristic moods, and testify to the extreme alienation, hopelessness, and despair that he felt. Despite its intimate tone, the work in large measure constitutes a general testimony of the experience of Polish exiles forced to travel across the ocean.

The article offers an insight into problematic issues the advanced learners of Polish as a FL cope with in terms of grammar in speaking and writing. It opens with a brief insight into teaching literature, poetry including, in a FL classroom. What follows includes types of poems and their potential to be used in the teaching context, mainly when teaching grammar. Having presented  the scope of linguistic problems experienced by the users of Polish as a FL, the type and frequency of grammatical problems are discussed. Polish grammar-based issues the foreigners struggle with constituted the main area of the research conducted among 146 students of the Polish Language Course attending the School of Polish Language and Culture at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The findings come from oral and written assignments produced by the sample in question, and, most frequently, reflect grammatical mistakes that are persistent and difficult to eliminate from the linguistic repertoire. Given that,  ways of using poetry as a means of a “grammar refresher” are suggested. These include a few examples of activities based on poems to be used  when trying to overcome particular linguistic difficulties, together with implications for teachers raising students’ language awareness and developing reflection on language per se.

Hans Erich Nossack had written his poems for several years. He treated them as a study of dramatic forms that he soon abandoned as well in order to present his own contact with the reality in the prose at last. The poem Vorspruch und Frage [The prologue and the question] opening his only anthology Gedichte [Poems] establishes an index of the essential elements of this German writer's poetics. Just here, the connecting of the national socialism's context with many poems proofs a pertinent step because the meaning strata of separate expressions are unveiled deepest in that case only. The death that is anticipated by the feeling of timelessness and by the appaling silence (Gefangenenwärter [The jail-keeper]) becomes a rock for sensibility and autonomy of the individual. The meeting with the death, provoked by the inversion of the sequence of result and cause, appears as the last chance to be delivered from the space overwhelmed with the totalitarism (An den Tod [To the death]). That ist what makes the similarity to Matthias Claudius's poem with the same title who notes the final possibility to set the world free from the evil in the death. The death also intensifies the feelings derived from the life and can even draw some fife from the places suspected of its default (Der Tod [The death]) - the ability that arises in consequence of the shrinking of the reality after the losing of a near person in Rainer Maria Rilke's poem (Todes-Erfahrung [The experience of the death]). An attempt to stop the death contains the poem Ein Mädchen spricht mit dem Tod [A gril talks to the death] that the historical background venishes in and where the love calls up to fight for the life: The girl struck with that feeling is confronted with the power of the death that the heroine of the poem tenderly admonishes not to run in front of the life yet but to come back to its place and to locate itself behind the life.

The article is an attempt to look at a few selected volumes for a child’s addressee, which allows to indicate the aspects of evaluation to the buyers of such editions, and to the publishers to forecast the accuracy of composing such publications. The editorial reading was based on volumes of poems by Jerzy Ficowski, Elżbieta and Witold Szwajkowski, Marcin Brykczyński and Agnieszka Frączek in the context of speech therapy exercises. This editorial reading, also colloquially understood as “reading activity”, focused on the following phenomena: – bold, – italics, – highlighting with colour, – placing the text on a coloured background, – moving the information about the practised phonic sounds onto the margin, – placing the information about the practised phonic sounds and the age of the child in a live page, – font selection (serif/sans-serif), – change of the letter depending on the recipient of a given paragraph, etc. The observations concern the power of the educational (speech therapy) influence of the editorial aterial or the materiality of the book in the meaning of Roland Reuß. One can also try to say that this series of distinctions facilitates working with the text both for the speech therapist and the child. However, one should pay attention to the entire editorial and child-perspective of such editions. Not only the way of distinction itself is important, but the correspondingly clear contrasts between the used colours, writing degrees, spacing, etc. are preserved, remembering the fun and educational function of the type of publication for the child as a recipient, especially with speech therapy deficits.

The article “Prosaic Aspects of Life. (Extra)ordinary Histories” is an attempt at describing the experience of fatherhood found in the poems of the authors from “bruLion” and “postbruLion” groups. While analyzing the social transformations which took place in Poland in the 1990s (e.g. the modifications of the system of social roles stereotypically assigned to each of the sexes, the change of paradigms of what has been commonly recognized as “male” and “female”, “the crisis of fatherhood,” extensively described by sociologists, etc.) and the transformations within lyric poetry itself (domination of personal lyric poetry, autobiographism, rejection of political and social obligations of literature in favour of the interest in privacy and concentration on the individual experience), the author asks about the literary attractiveness of the motif and analyses its various manifestations in the works of Marcin Świetlicki, Jacek Podsiadło, Robert Adamczak, Sławomir Matusz and Dariusz Suska.

Jedność sztuk i życia. Norwida teoria estezy

Basing on the interpretation of Cyprian Kamil Norwid’s poems and other works the author presents the observation that a human being appears and exists when is being perceived. It means that the process of seeing is the creative act. The artist’s gaze described by the poet provides the perfect example of the interrelation of being, being seen and creating by seeing. It also stresses the role of dialogue in becoming human. Such an artistic activity bridges the gulf between the world of ideas and the real life. It is a part of the real life and the pattern for creative living as a human being.

The article presents three little-known poems of the Lithuanian poet and diarist of the first half of the nineteenth century, Gabriela Puzynina. The seemingly trivial subject related to knitting needlework and conventional form of the poems gain a new value, if considered in the context of sociology and anthropology literature. The analysis, beyond the traditional genre study, are subject to the following issues: the poet as a distinct entity and her membership to women’s environment, the process of building the women’s identity, everyday life and its literary reflection, material culture in the comparison with the anthropocentric approach of the past. There is also raised a question about the way of reception such an occasional literature today. According to the author of the article, reading Puzynina’s poems only as “the literary trifles” wrongfully condemned them to oblivion, yet they are interesting and credible testimony of historical time and a medium for exploring the individual human life from the past.

Pre-death poems / Wiersze dośmiertne are the poet’s personal confessions, but also an attempt to tackle the topic of death experienced through the passing of relatives and friends. The crucial issues while encountering the problem of death are considerations on time and places that are, have been and will be important for a human being. The author, similarly to her earlier collections of poems, convinces the readers that every human action is imbued with meaning, sense as we are all searching for and incessantly trying to establish the aim of our activities. What is essential is that for the heroine who is a believer, death is not the end but it is the stage leading to salvation. The poet as an outstanding specialist in literary studies employs in those poems well-known motifs, uses paradox, contrast, she combines a naïve nursery rhyme with metaphysical dread, nevertheless, in all of those parts she remains authentic.

This study presents something of a “hybrid” chapter in the history of Czech surrealism, focusing both on the reception of surrealism outside the Prague centre and on the surrealists’ interest in the literary-artistic genre of the poetry book with photographs, which appeared in notable forms not only in the Czech “surrealist centre” (represented in the interwar period by the Surrealist Group in Czechoslovakia and the individual figures within it: Jindřich Heisler, Vítězslav Nezval, Jindřich Štyrský, Karel Teige and Toyen), but also (in a different sense) in marginal movements largely associated with surrealism (Linie in České Budějovice, the group surrounding Jaroslav Janík and Kamil Linhart in Louny, the Brno Ra-ists and Monstrualism in Žižkov). The aim is not to present clear conclusions or a summary, but on the basis of examples of selected works of poetry and photograpy from the 1930s and the first half of the 1940s to open up certain topics, issues and questions - thematically involving both specific manifestations of surrealism “on the margins” and various kinds of relations between text and photographs, which may become the subject of possible further research.
CS

In his works, Gianni Rodari always had an attentive eye for the environment and the ways in which it was described. At the time when an invariably beautiful and positive vision of nature prevailed, he wrote stories that, while entertaining, made the reader think. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Rodari largely anticipated the themes of environmental emergency. As he dedicated many of his poems, fables and articles to environmental issues, the methodological starting point for this study involves compiling a complete catalogue of Rodari’s works published in books and magazines. In the next step, their most recurring themes are identified (adults’ inattention to the needs of children, property speculation, the changing of the seasons, animals unable to find their way around in pollution-suffocated cities, etc.), and Rodari’s style is assessed as always aiming for lightness and smile, rather than for didacticism. The results show that Rodari skilfully used fantasy to bring out the importance of respect for the environment and the role that childhood could have in the development of positive attitudes to the environment. The conclusion reasserts the current relevance of Rodari’s works and their validity in education as viewed from an ecological perspective.
IT

The article discusses occasional poems by Plato Kostecki (1832–1908) – a poet and journalist, a long-time editor of “Nowa Reforma”, an ethnic Ruthenian and Polish patriot. His political goal was the independence of Poland united by the union with Ukraine. He repeatedly formulated this goal during toasts and poems written to commemorate the jubilees of famous public figures and in many speeche at celebrations in Lviv. Kostecki’s occasional poems integrated the inhabitants of Galicia during the period of national captivity. The popular poet lived to see several anniversaries of his journalistic work. The most important one took place in 1888. The course and echoes of this ceremony allow for a thesis that it was a political pretext to remind Poles of the 25th anniversary of the anti-Russian uprising in 1863.

The article attempts to explore the features of early 21st century Ukrainian poetry for children. The purpose of exploration is to identify the genre and ideographic features of poetry: innovation and traditionalism. Tracing the genre modifications of poetry and their common and distinctive features, the author addresses the key features of poetry for children in general: artistic and literary discourse, the functions of poetry, thematic direction, strophic structure of the poem, the existence of images, characters and others. The article proves that the basis for the renewal of poetic genres is traditional genres of folklore and poetry. There are organically updated folk genres in modern poetry for children (praise, scarecrows, fables, nonsense, counters, patter, games) and newly created genres (poetry-pictures, tricks, coloring books, checks, stumbling blocks, therapeutic poems). The search for new forms of expression of idiosyncrasies of artists leads to the emergence of original genres. These have appeared as an original phenomenon in the Ukrainian literature of the early 21st century and offer a wide scope for further research.
