Der Roman „Vielleicht Esther“ von der deutschsprachigen, ukrainisch-jüdischen Autorin Katja Petrowskaja fokussiert die aus ihrem späten Sprachwechsel sowie aus der Tatsache der Nicht-Muttersprachlichkeit bzw. „Quersprachigkeit“ resultierenden Konsequenzen für neue Möglichkeiten identitärer Selbstkonstruktion und die daran anschließenden Erinnerungshandlungen. Dabei sollen zwei besonders markante Aspekte ins Auge gefasst werden: die Bedeutung des Deutschen für die Vertreterin eines jüdisch-ukrainisch-russischen Opferkollektivs und die Folgen der Benutzung der fremden deutschen Sprache im zwischen kulturell-nationalen Codierungen angelegten Schreib- und Erinnerungsprozess.

“Maybe Esther”, the debut novel by the German-speaking Ukrainian-Jewish novelist Katja Petrowskaja, problematises the processes of memory and identity construction against the background of multi- and translingualism. The present article analyses the role played by the German language for the Ukrainian-Jewish-Russian survivors of the Holocaust and for their offspring. Likewise, it discusses the ramifications of writing in a foreign – in this case, German – language, and the resulting modifications of the processes of remembering.

Powieść niemieckojęzycznej pisarki pochodzenia ukraińsko-żydowskiego Katji Petrowskiej „Vielleicht Esther” problematyzuje proces konstruowania tożsamości oraz obchodzenia się z pamięcią na tle kompleksowej refleksji nad wielojęzykowością i „transjęzykowością”. Artykuł analizuje znaczenie języka niemieckiego dla żydowsko-ukraińsko-rosyjskich Ocalonych z Zagłady i ich potomków. Przedstawione zostały również konsekwencje pisania w obcym, niemieckim języku i wynikające z tego modyfikacje procesów wspominania.
