Finding the “common language of fire”: Jerzy Ficowski on Jewish mysticism (prolegomena) This article is an attempt to outline the relationship between the work of Jerzy Ficowski and the Jewish mystical thought that was brought in this paper to a kabbalistic element – a synthesis of components considered basic for two great currents of the non-orthodox Judaism: Kabbalah and Hasidism. At the level of content they consist of the motifs of the Book, Word and Letter, Angels and Light, the messianic topos of the Just, cosmogonic and eschatological myths, as well as specific, non-linear recognition of time – which are strongly present in the poetry of the author of the Regions of the Great Heresy. At the level of structure there are noticeable the emanation model and the duality of language and imagination, of matter and spirituality – diametrically different elements, yet gravitating toward the ultimate unity. The text, containing references to translation and “Schulzian” output of Jerzy Ficowski, is focused on his poetry and is an introduction to its aspectual monograph. Key words: contemporary Polish poetry; Jerzy Ficowski; Jewish mysticism; Kabbalah; Hasidism;
Anita Jarzyna’s essays, collected in the book Post-koiné. Studia o nieantropocentrycznych językach (poetyckich) (Post-Koiné. Studies on Non-Anthropocentric (Poetic) Languages), contribute to the flourishing field of animal studies. Her work develops a coherent theory of the reading of poetry using the latest methodologies. Jarzyna’s main argument, developed through a microscopic analysis of the the poems of several dozen poets, is for the necessity of the intentional reconfiguration of well-worn expressions and the re-evaluation of tropes. The reason for this is, as Donna Haraway argues, that such linguistic constructions and tropes are the reason the language “deviates from the correct path and takes a turn”. This remark applies not only to the works of Joanna Mueller and Justyna Bargielska, which intercept and neutralise derogatory language related to hunting (pomiot, pokot), but also to poets deconstructing oxymorons functioning in the Polish language (as in the case of Ryszard Krynicki), as well as allusively referring to canonical formulas (Adorno) which are of importance in the period (for example, in the poems of The Lives of Birds and Mammals, Kronhold). This is not the only strategy Jarzyna decides to pursue. She also outlines a complementary account of the animal biography (for example, Laika the dog, one of the first animals in space), the publicizing of which is part of Éric Baratay’s project of extending human history to non-human actors. The French historian postulates that the animal cannot remain a blank spot in history; a methodology for reading documents and testimonies must be developed in order to allow the reconstruction of the life path of animals. In the light of new research, the agency of animals is unquestionable, a narrative that Jarzyna also builds upon. This project criticizes many stereotypes and announces the development of a new way of speaking and thinking about writing. The first step in revising the old order is to revolutionize language by purifying it of animal-related curse words and other linguistic constructions that harm animals. In the eyes of this reviewer, Jarzyna’s monograph stands out from other publications in terms of the construction of the argument and its centralpremises, which go beyond the cautious style of many academic books.

Studia Anity Jarzyny zebrane w książce Post-koiné. Studia o nieantropocentrycznych językach (poetyckich) lokują się w polu „przeżywających” obecnie rozkwit studiów nad zwierzętami i wypracowują spójną koncepcję czytania poezji z zastosowaniem najnowszych metodologii. Jej projekt poddaje krytyce wiele stereotypów i zapowiada wypracowywanie nowego sposobu mówienia i myślenia o zwierzętach.
W mniejszym stopniu sięga do interpretacji liturgicznej. W zakończeniu podjęto próbę zestawienia cyklu z innymi lirykami Wójtowicza o Emaus.

This article deals with Kazimierz Wójtowicz's series Emaus – werset po wersecie (Emmaus - verse by verse), unique in Polish poetry and included in the volume Po prostu Emaus. Wybór wierszy z lat 1978–2016 (Just Emaus. A selection of poems from 1978–2016) (Kraków 2016). The discussed reflection is divided into four segments. The first is an introduction. It shows the priest-poet's fascination with the biblical theme of Emmaus, as evidenced by his numerous ekphrastic and non- ekphrastic poems, classified by the author as Emaus w słowie (Emmaus in the word) and Emaus w obrazie (Emmaus in the image). The second part is an attempt to systematize biblical commentaries on the pericope of St. Luke (24, 13–35). Three main directions of interpretation are discussed, namely, liturgical, symbolic, and the contrapuntal nature of the pericope on Emmaus in relation to the passage about the meeting of the Risen Jesus with Mary Magdalene. The third most extensive segment includes the analysis of 15 poems within the series of our interest that paraphrases most of the verses from the pericope of St. Luke. The description of the following poems is not extensive due to the modest size of this article. In the last segment, it is emphasized that Wójtowicz's poetic reflection on the pericope of St. Luke has artistic values and is also kerygmatic in nature. Commenting on biblical verses using the language of poetry, we primarily refer to the symbolism of the pericope. We use liturgical interpretation to a lesser extent. In the end, our attempt is made to juxtapose the series with other poems by Wójtowicz about Emmaus.
S.K. Leszczyński was a poet who studied physics and mathematics at the Nicolaus Copernicus University and philosophy at the University of Warsaw. He was associated with the Teachers’ Literary Club in Włocławek. He published poems in the local and national press, and published 4 volumes of poetry. His work shows sensitivity to the beauty of the world and the charms of nature, as well as admiration for the lushness of life. The poet expressed his fascination with the countryside perceiving it as an Arcadian land. His choice to live away from great clusters of people, haste, glitz and artificial values deepened his reflective attitude. His poems have a metaphysical dimension; some religious and ethical sensitivity is present in them. The author refers to biblical issues and the works of Polish writers: M. Sęp Szarzyński, F. Karpiński, A. Mickiewicz, B. Leśmian, K.I. Gałczyński, S. Grochowiak and W. Broniewski. His poetic language is rich, densely adorned with extraordinary metaphors, comparisons, epithets, and paradoxical constructions. One can observe some specific predatory imaging in it, as well as an idyllic gentleness can also be perceived. The poet did not shy away from bluntness and expressions that were strongly expressive, which he clashed with the universal, transcendent reality. By the frequent use of a strophic pattern, adherence to the rules of rhythm, adherence to rhymes, mostly inaccurate, and sometimes associative, he connects his works with tradition. On the other hand, he encounters contemporary – metaphorical and elliptical expression, creating stychic poems in which the segmentation of the text depends on individual logical and emotional accents, giving up punctuation marks, abandoning traditional versification schemes. S.K. Leszczyński also dealt with wood carving. He created amphoras, goblets, platters and other items that were displayed in domestic and foreign galleries. The work of this artist is stretched between these two elements, where words reign in one, and forms extracted from wood- in the other; in one there is an abstract elusiveness, and in the other- a tangible concrete; and finally, in one, seeking wisdom, philosophizing, and in the other, the beauty of what is physical. The artist, rotating in these extremely distant worlds, tried to achieve a kind of fullness and completeness.

S.K. Z tradycją łączy go częste stosowanie układu stroficznego, przestrzeganie zasad rytmiki, przywiązanie do rymów, przeważnie niedokładnych, bywa, że o charakterze asocjacyjnym. S.K.

The biographical and historical-literary analysis of works of the modern writer Jan Rybowicz indicates that having a family of one’s own was an unreachable dream for the artist, which affected his self-esteem and was a chance for his complete fulfillment. Letters to Elisabeth are showing problems of a sensitive artist in his contacts with women. The selected literary works draw attention at the issues of a lonely man missing a wife and children which he has never had. Autobiographical prose points to the passing time and difficult reality that made having a family impossible for the writer. Jan Rybowicz’s works show a man torn between his wishes and reality. A desire of having his own family gave him the strength to write, but, on the other hand, it made him suffer.
The article is an attempt to place Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poetry in the context of ecopoetics and to see whether such a targeted reading will open the poet’s lyrical works to new interpretative practices, which are becoming increasingly popular among researchers. In the discussion about the output of the author of Anaglify [Anaglyphs], natural motifs and themes appear relatively often, but so far they have rarely been treated as the main, independent subject of analysis. This sketch, through the interpretation of individual works, shows how nature, in this case especially that appearing in different forms of trees, in the volumes published in turn shape Miłobędzka’s writer’s imagination and inscribe themselves in the poetic project she has developed, which goes beyond the framework of literary strategy and whose assumptions allow it to be placed in the area of ecopoetics.

The article is a reflection on the symbols through which the modern experience of cultural belonging is expressed and on the motivations behind their contestation. Examples of selected themes that Marcin Świetlicki and Barbara Gruszka-Zych explore in their writing are used to examine the poetic quest to overcome feelings of alienation in one’s own cultural milieu. In spite of the differences between the two poets, both address the problems facing the contemporary consciousness of Western man, split between the desire to complete the process of deconstructing his own universal “identifying signs” and the need to creatively explore the process of symbolization itself. The issue of “internal acculturation,” as a particular case within the topic of acculturation as a whole, is also correlated to examples drawn from Francophone poetry.
