The article is an account of a hoax by the author, which led to publishing a paper introducing a new, non-existent therapy in a popular science monthly, Charaktery. The hoax, partly based on a similar provocation by Alan Sokal in 1996, was designed to examine the possibility of introducing a scientifically untested conception into popular science. Another goal was to provoke a public discussion about the phenomenon of pseudoscience penetrating science. The article recounts the history of the publication and briefly presents the content of the paper; it also shows the basic differences between Sokal’s hoax and the author’s sham. The paper ends with conclusions and questions raised by the experiment.

It is quite a problematic issue, whether there is any connection between popularization and institution. The article presents different understanding of the term ‘institution’, which appears to have more creative nature. The second part of the essay considers Michal Heller’s critical strategies of reading. Heller’s reviews seem to be a kind of popular science communication, tightly connected not only to the academic institutions. It is the relationship between the popularization and the institution that authorizes to talk about formation of the discourse.

The aim of this article is to discuss the metaphorisation of the discourse of neoplastic diseases in Ulf Ellervik’s popular science published between 2011 and 2016. Of my particular interest are the source domains chosen by the author. Conceptual metaphor theory is used to analyse cancer metaphors as a way of popularising science, especially the biochemistry of life.

The text was created on the basis of interviews with Caltech scholars (Pasadena, USA) in 2018. The talks concerned various contemporary theories of biogenesis and the role of their philosophical premises. The researchers also addressed the issue of popularizing science. The worldview is shaped (and established) by popularizing publications. They also answered the questions how their personal beliefs influenced on research.

In this paper I offer an analysis of works by Czech author Vlastimil Vondruška famous for his popular criminal stories and novels with historical background framed by a debate on populism and the rise of iliberal political trends in central Europe. My point of interest is the way how can an author who explicitly expresses populist notion of people vs. elites distinction use the academic authority and expertise respectively. Analysing Vondruška’s both fiction and his non-fiction books I trace the contradictory position that he advocates. On one side he criticizes academics and academia in general as a corrupted field that is pushed only by pecuniary and selfish motivations. On the other side he uses scientific and expert authority in case of his characters and his public activity to comment on topical issues. I argue that this contradiction is not only caused by false use of arguments and facts but that it is a case of the liar’s paradox, which I believe is a major attribute of populist discourse. In the conclusion, I discuss how historians have responded to Vondruška’s wide popularity in Czech public both as an author of fiction and as a commentator using historical analogies. I argue that it is not enough to merely criticize false arguments and misleading facts, nor it is sufficient to argue against the values and beliefs that they advocate. I believe that we need to change our understanding of relation between science and society from linear paradigm of “popular science” to more complex, participatory conception of socially engaged science that can address the populist challenges we face today

The article attempts to prove that Darwinism in popular culture plays a role of a theory of everything. Bestselling authors of popular science such as Edward O. Wilson, Richard Dawkins and Bill Bryson have acquainted general public with the theory of evolution, and its newest facet — the Modern Synthesis. Darwinian paradigms, as defined by Thomas Kuhn, are also used in popular books on cosmology, sociobiology, psychology, and religious studies. Moreover, the Darwinian grand narrative of evolutional history shapes the way in which contemporary mass culture presents the history of our planet in numerous educational TV series. Last but not least, Charles Darwin himself has recently become a popular icon and the story of his life is remade in a growing number of fiction and non-fiction books and movies.

The article analyses children’s non-fiction aimed at developing ecological and environmental awareness, with a particular focus on Italian publishing production. On examining recent trends in the domain, it is possible to observe significant elements of change: an increasing focus on the use of captivating narrative techniques and a great attention to the visual element of the book, which functions both as an aesthetic element and as demonstrative evidence. Observably, communication in non-fiction is more and more premised on narrative approaches that cleverly stimulate imaginative and critical thinking skills. Overcoming the purely informative and scientific content-based communicative paradigm, traditionally associated with the notion of non-fiction, and integrating new forms of narrative writing, recent non-fiction exhibits an emotional-affective dimension capable of stimulating critical reflection, ecological awareness and virtuous behaviour for the protection of the environment in all its aspects.

Przedstawia wyniki badań dotyczących obecności i aktywności w wybranych mediach społecznościowych pracowników naukowych z dziedziny informatologii i bibliologii.

Social media are both social platforms and valuable sources of information. Also researchers create accounts on popular social media for scientific communication, academic discussion and exchange of experiences. Researcher profiles are not only popular science; they are also used to provoke debate, share knowledge and are places to express opinions. Social media can also be used to create the researcher’s professional image. The article attempts to analyze the use of social media as a means of scientific communication and the way they communicate scientific content to its users. It presents results of a research on the presence and activity of Polish library and information science academics in selected social media services.

The article discusses the popular science style in magazines addressed to younger schoolchildren. The analysed texts have been published in the “Kumpel” magazine and are devoted to the subject of nature. Their distinguishing feature is the pursuit of intersemiotic and non-linear method of encoding information. The spatial configuration of information allowsto perceive the meanings conveyed by means of verbal, illustrational, and typographical code in any order. In the article, I am looking for answers to the following questions: what means are used by the writers of popular science texts targeted at children, how to analyse the perceived measures, and the identified method of constructing popular science texts affects the modification of learningliteracy by the model recipient.

Artykuł dotyczy stylu popularnonaukowego w czasopismach adresowanych do odbiorcy dziecięcego w wieku wczesnoszkolnym. Analizowane teksty pochodzą z czasopisma „Kumpel” i dotyczą tematyki przyrodniczej.
