After unification under Piedmontese leadership, the Albertine Statute became the constitution of the Kingdom of Italy. The article contains a history of codification, its modifications especially under the Fascist regime and finally abrogation when Italy became a republic in 1948. Furthermore, the text shows a special role of the constitutional principles for the history of Italy.
