The article takes up the issue of the relation between the truth of Divine mercy with priesthood, mainly in the aspect of its effect on the form of priesthood and the priestly formation. The priesthood of the sacrament of the holy orders introduces one into a particular bond with God in His Trinitarian mystery; it makes him similar to Archpriest Christ, makes him more able and invites him to imitate Christ in the attitude and mission towards the Church. Experiencing this bond with God, who is the Father of mercy, with Christ, who is a personification and fulfillment of the Father’s mercy as the “reliable and merciful” Archpriest, and with the Holy Spirit, in whose power salutary graces are distributed in the priestly service of the Church as Divine mercy's gifts, cannot reveal the feature of mercy in presbyters' very life and service. Hence in experiencing their priesthood presbyters should perceive significant relations between Divine mercy and priesthood; they should explore the mystery of Divine mercy, especially in its relation to priesthood, develop their reverence for Divine mercy, and imitate this mercy in their priestly service, that is in a way constantly form themselves also in the light of the mystery of Divine mercy.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę związku prawdy miłosierdzia Bożego z kapłaństwem głównie w aspekcie jej wpływu na kształt kapłaństwa i formację kapłańską. Kapłaństwo sakramentu święceń wprowadza w szczególną więź z Bogiem w Jego trynitarnej tajemnicy, upodabnia do Chrystusa Arcykapłana, uzdalnia i zaprasza do naśladowania Go w postawie i misji wobec Kościoła. Przeżywanie tej więzi z Bogiem, który jest Ojcem miłosierdzia, z Chrystusem, który uosabia i urzeczywistnia miłosierdzie Ojca jako Arcykapłan „wiarygodny i miłosierny” oraz z Duchem Świętym, w mocy którego w Kościele rozdzielane są łaski zbawcze w posłudze kapłańskiej jako dary miłosierdzia Bożego, nie może nie ujawniać w samym życiu i posłudze prezbiterów rysu miłosierdzia. Stąd też w autentycznym i owocnym przeżywaniu swego kapłaństwa prezbiterzy winni dostrzegać znaczące odniesienia miłosierdzia Bożego i kapłaństwa, zgłębiać tajemnicę Bożego miłosierdzia, zwłaszcza w relacji do kapłaństwa, rozwijać nabożeństwo do miłosierdzia Bożego, naśladować to miłosierdzie w swej posłudze kapłańskiej, czyli niejako formować siebie stale także w świetle tajemnicy miłosierdzia Bożego.

The objective of the Year for Priests proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI was to urge priests to interior renewal and more incisive witness to the Gospel in today’s world. Although the witness to Christ and his Gospel is a common responsibility of all Christians, this primarily refers to the pastors. The central problem of this study was expressed in the question: What is the function of testimony in the life and mission of pastors? Its main source is the teaching of Pope Benedict XVI on the priesthood. The article consists of three parts: (a) the biblical basis of Christian witness (martyria); (b) the spiritual life of priests as a foundation of their testimony; and (c) several ways to implement martyria in the ministry of pastors.
