The article presents the many aspects of the essential competencies and skills of probation officers for adults, necessary in working with probationers with an alcohol problem. The study documents the relationships that occur between alcohol consumption and criminal behavior. Emphasis was placed on the attitudes and communication skills of probation officers that motivate probationers to self‑rehabilitate. The article compared the traditional reconstruction‑and‑ creation modes of working with an alcohol‑addicted probationer with the possibility of applying the rules and stages of work based on the so‑called Motivational Interviewing method devised by W. R. Miller and S. Rollnick with the aim of preparing the convicted offenders to change their behaviors connected with the use of psychoactive substances.

W artykule dokonano wielowymiarowego ujęcia podstawowych kompetencji i umiejętności kuratorów sądowych dla dorosłych, niezbędnych w pracy z osobami dozorowanymi z problemem alkoholowym. Udokumentowano zależności, jakie zachodzą pomiędzy spożywaniem alkoholu a zachowaniami przestępczymi. Zwrócono uwagę na postawy i zdolności komunikacyjne kuratorów motywująceosoby dozorowane do autoresocjalizacji. Porównano tradycyjne, rekonstrukcyjno‑ kreacyjne sposoby pracy z dozorowanym uzależnionym od alkoholu z możliwością zastosowania zasad i stadiów pracy opartej na tzw. metodzie Rozmowy Motywującej (Motivational Interviewing), opracowanej przez W. R. Millera i S. Rollnicka z myślą o przygotowaniu skazanych do zmiany zachowań związanychz używaniem substancji psychoaktywnych.
