Celem artykułu jest ustalenie, jakie stanowisko w kwestii dobroci Boga zajmuje David Hume w Dialogach o religii naturalnej. Omawiam przede wszystkim problem wynikania i związane z nim argumenty dotyczące relacji dobra do zła oraz cztery okoliczności występowania zła w świecie.

The article is devoted to an analysis of David Hume’s position on God’s benevolence in his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion. The focal point is the problem of inference and the accompanying arguments concerning the relations between good and evil, as well as the four circumstances in which evil enters the world. In the conclusion, I discuss the hypothesis of moral indifference as Hume’s skeptical voice in the debate on the possibility of inferring the moral attributes of God on the basis of experience.
The paper tries to analyze the views of some of the contemporary theologians on the problem of evil. This problem for centuries was the most convincing argument of atheists in favour of the non-existence of God, and therefore the answers to this problem of today’s theologians are of great importance, especially in the context of the rationality of faith. The conclusion of the paper indicates that the most popular standpoint of today’s theology is the so called sceptical theism (agnosticism). The author argues also, that this point of view is alien to the theological tradition (especially to the theology of the Fathers of the Church) and he indicates at its weaknesses. The paper signals also, that the distinction: global and local evil could help theology in solving the current impasse.

This article deals with the relation between the theological idea of God’s omnipotence and the problem of evil which refers to the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil with God who is good. One of the main arguments of theodicy, which is a philosophical discipline dealing with this question, points to some important limitations of God’s omnipotence. According to this argument, God’s power is limited by different factors. One of them is human freedom: God can not prevent evil resulting from free decisions of people, because He himself decided them to be free. But this argument can be extended to the whole created world: God gives freedom not only to man, but to the whole universe as well, and this is why it can freely evolve in the boundaries of laws of nature. Physical evil is a simple consequence of such freedom of created world. The paper is composed of three parts. At first, the very idea of God’s omnipotence is discussed. Then the relation of God’s omnipotence and the laws of nature is expounded. In the end the so called non-interventionist model of God’s action in nature is presented.

Pierwsza część artykułu dotyczy samej idei Bożej wszechmocy; w drugiej części idea ta zostaje odniesiona do koncepcji praw przyrody; w trzeciej i ostatniej omówiony jest tzw. nieinterwencjonistyczny model działania Boga w przyrodzie.
In this paper, I critically analyse Jerome Gellman’s proposal that there exists a type of experience in which a subject experiences evil and perceives in this evil that there is no God. This a-religious experience gives prima facie support to the belief that there is no God. I show how accepting Gellman’s proposal allows us to go beyond the classical distinction between the intellectual and the emotional problem of evil. It also allows us to defend the rationality of some atheists, who do not believe in God because they experienced evil, but do not know the relevants arguments from evil. I suggest that there are two problems with Gellman’s account. The first is that there are no clear criteria of identifying a given experience of evil as the perception of God’s non-existence. The second problem concerns the scope of Gellman’s proposal. It is possible that some experiences of evil, which lead people to the belief that there is no God, do not count as perceptions that there is no God. In case of beliefs formed on the basis of such experiences, one must therefore look for another, non-perceptual grounds for justifying such beliefs.

In this article, I have sought to draw numerous parallels between Boethius’s thoughts and the content of the Book of Wisdom. The starting point of these considerations is that in Boethius’ On the consolation of philosophy there is a direct quote from the Book of Wisdom (8:1). The similarities and analogies mined in the course of the analysis concern primarily ethical issues: the question of man’s relationship to God, human suffering, and the question of evil. In the context of the most pressing issues that appear in the study of Boethius’s thinking, such as the question of his Christianism or sources of Neoplatonic influences, perhaps, based on these analogies, it will be possible to move a little closer toward solving these problems.

Wydobywane w toku analiz podobieństwa i analogie dotyczą przede wszystkim kwestii etycznych: problemu relacji człowieka do Boga, ludzkiego cierpienia oraz kwestii zła.

At a time of acute danger, people commonly petition God for help for themselves or their loved ones; such as praying that an avalanche heading in one’s direction be diverted, or that an organ donor be found for one’s dying child. Such prayer seems natural and, indeed, for believers, reasonable and acceptable. It seems perverse to condemn such typical prayer, as wrong. But once we closely examine what is actually happening in such situations, we shall see that frequently prayer of this sort is morally problematic. The author argues that such prayer ought to be seen as a form of action (rather than, say, mere hope), thereby needing to meet the higher moral standards ones which apply to actions; and that the assumption of the benevolence of the deity does not suffice to make such prayer legitimate.
