W niniejszym artykule dokonano edycji dwóch niewielkich źródeł – wykazów przełożonych generalnych zakonu kanoników regularnych od pokuty z ok. 1699 i 1897 r. oraz prepozytów-infułatów klasztoru tej reguły w Widzieniszkach z ok. 1765 r. Edycja oparta jest na materiałach przechowywanych w archiwum kościo-ła św. Marka w Krakowie, a które nie były znane w dotychczasowych badaniach nad tą zanikłą wspólnotą zakonną.

The article presents the edition of two minor sources – the lists of gen-eral superiors of the Order of Canons Regular of Penance and the provosts-prelates of the monastery in Widzieniszki from around 1699 and from 1897. The edition is based on materials kept in the archives of the church of St. Mark in Krakow, which were not known in previous studies on this – no longer existing – religious community.

The religious institutes in the Catholic Church priorities the issue of the formation of candidates. Vocation to a religious life is verified at the initial stages: in prenovitiate and novitiate. This article mentioned the canonical and legal requirements determining validity and honesty of the admission, first to a postulant and then to a novitiate. A decision concerning the admission of candidates is made by higher superiors. Guidelines in making the decisions are provided by recognition of age, health, personality and maturity of the interested. Subsequently, the superiors must exclude the existence of any obstacles which would cause nullity of the legal transaction: admission to novitiate. Their decision is based on prior familiarization with documents and certificates which are demanded or required by the common law of the Church and own law of a religious institute. They should also consider prohibitions concerning novitiate admissions since although they do not cancel the decision, ignoring them would be an ill deed. The actions of superiors, taken meticulously and in accordance with the Canon Law, will result in good discrimination and admission of appropriate and suitable candidates, and that, eventually, will prove favorable to the latter and the institute itself.

Życie zakonne jest specyficznym zaproszeniem osoby, która odczytuje swoje życiowe powołanie w duchu wiary, jak również w przeżywaniu radości życia. Powołanie do życia zakonnego rozeznaje się na wstępnych etapach: przede wszystkim w prenowicjacie i nowicjacie. W opracowaniu przywołano kanoniczno-prawne wymagania, które stanowią o ważności i godziwości przyjęcia, najpierw do postulantatu, a następnie nowicjatu. Decyzję o przyjęciu kandydatów podejmują przełożeni wyżsi. Wytycznymi dla dokonania tej decyzji są rozeznanie: wieku, zdrowia, charakteru i dojrzałości zainteresowanych. Następnie przełożeni muszą wykluczyć istnienie przeszkód, które powodowałyby nieważność czynności prawnej: przyjęcia do nowicjatu. Ich decyzja opiera się na zapoznaniu się z dokumentami i świadectwami, których domaga się albo zaleca prawo powszechne oraz własne instytutu zakonnego. Powinni rozważyć także zakazy przyjęcia do nowicjatu, które choć nie unieważniają decyzji, to jednak ich zignorowanie powoduje niegodziwość działania. Zaniedbanie tych działań skutkować może negatywnymi konsekwencjami dla powołanego, jak i samego instytutu. Natomiast czynności przełożonych, dokonane skrupulatnie i zgodnie z prawem kanonicznym, owocują dobrym rozeznaniem i przyjęciem do instytutu odpowiednich oraz zdatnych kandydatów, co w sumie służy dobru tych ostatnich oraz samego instytutu. Kościół z największą starannością troszczy się o formację zakonników, co także jest współczesnym wyzwaniem. Zmniejszenie się liczby zakonników, co zauważa się w niektórych regionach świata, należy zrekompensować ich jakością, która w dużym stopniu zależy od formacji.

In this paper, the author accentuates the fact that authority in religious institutes does not only have a purely institutional character, but it also includes spiritual and community elements. The exercise of this power within the whole institute and at all levels of governance of the institute is made in both individual and collective terms, under the general and their own institute’s laws. Referring to the constant tradition of the issue of governing institutes he notes that the management of the institute cannot in any event be entrusted to the whole community as such. The essential tasks of a board in institutions, whether in terms of individual or collective management, are the organisation of the structures of community life and the protection of fidelity to the mission of the institute and its charisma. In the later part of the study, the author also indicates that a general chapter should not to be perceived in a mythical way, i.e. as if it were a panacea for all religious ills. In the institute of consecrated life, the board’s perfection depends not so much on the structures, but on persons with adequate natural gifts and an individual charisma. Deficiencies of individual superiors involving the inappropriate governance will not be removed by the action of a collective body that is the general chapter. Also, one should not be under a delusion that in the acts of the general chapter responsibility is spread over many people and it decreases individual responsibility. Besides, it is wrong to seek and promote the spirit of a democracy that aims to defend the personal rights of individual members or groups in a religious institute. This may sometimes lead to applying for rights that should rather be part of powers opposite to the Gospel. The general chapter, therefore, should be a sign of unity in love of the institute and express a common concern of all its members for the good of the whole community.
