The purpose of the article is to compare macroeconomic factors that determine the standard of living in Poland prior to the beginning of the process of transformation (1988–1989) and nowadays (2011). The article consists of six parts: introduction, four main parts and summary. The main parts present statistics on changes in GDP, the level of employment and unemployment and the average wage in Poland in the years 1989–2011. Furthermore, they analyse changes in different measures of income disparities, taking into account the effects of inflation on the situation of different (poorer and wealthier) social groups. The summary contains brief conclusions.

Celem artykułu jest próba porównania warunków życia w Polsce przed rozpoczęciem procesu transformacji ustrojowej (1988-1989) oraz w czasach współczesnych (2011 r.). Próbie weryfikacji poddano hipotezę badawczą: warunki życia społeczeństwa w III RP są zdecydowanie lepsze niż w czasach PRL. W artykule przedstawiono ilustrację statystyczną dotycząca zmian przeciętnego wynagrodzenia oraz poziomu i struktury własnościowej zatrudnienia w Polsce w latach 1989-2011. Ponadto ukazano zmiany różnych miar dysproporcji dochodów oraz wpływ niezrównoważonej inflacji na sytuację różnych (biedniejszych i bogatszych) grup społecznych. W podsumowaniu zawarto wnioski końcowe oraz stwierdzono, iż postawionej hipotezy nie da się w sposób jednoznaczny zweryfikować pozytywnie.
