Artykuł ma na celu próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie jakimi kompetencjami dysponują Polacy w zakresie języków obcych. Stanowi również analizę polskiego systemu edukacyjnego w odniesieniu do zakładanych osiągnięć uczniów i studentów co do poziomu znajomości języków obcych na wszystkich etapach edukacyjnych. Ponadto artykuł jest próbą ukazania faktu, że proces kształcenia oraz system ewaluacji kompetencji w obszarze języków obcych jest skoncentrowany wokół biernego odtwarzania przyswojonych zagadnień językowych i w wielu przypadkach kompetencje językowe pracowników nie odpowiadają potrzebom małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw.

The article aims at answering the question what competences in the field of foreign languages Polish people have. It is also the analysis of the Polish educational system with the reference to the assumed students’ achievements as to the level of their foreign language knowledge. Moreover, the article also tries to show the fact that the educational process and the system of evaluation the competences in the area of foreign languages is focused on the passive reproduction of the learnt language parts and in many cases language competences of the employees do not meet the needs of small and medium enterprises owners.
