Sprzyja to częstszemu uwzględnieniu przeszłości. Socjologiczne rewizje historii mają też funkcje społeczne, służą odrzuceniu mitów historycznych, aby wzmocnić podmiotowość i tożsamości społeczne.

The article investigates how historically oriented sociological analyses – the studies that incorporate the past in describing and explaining contemporary phenomena – address the issue of collective and individual agency in Polish society. The main research question is whether references to Polish history accentuate agency or structural context. The analysis is undertaken within three domains of historical sociology in Poland: (1) the processes of modernization and globalization after the systemic transformation; (2) the regional distinctiveness of Eastern Europe, especially of its peripheral status; (3) the dependency paths at the local level. The findings suggest that the recognition of collective agency prevails, although there have been some changes in this respect. There is an increasing emphasis on the limiting influence of institutions, the pressure of rules and the pool of cultural resources. Besides, sociological revisions of Polish history perform important social functions. They participate in rejecting historical myths and in strengthening collective agency and identities.
Sposób, w jaki Arendt wplata wydarzenia historyczne w filozofię polityczną, jest bodaj najbardziej oczywistym dowodem oryginalności jej myślenia. Autor dowodzi związku, jaki Arendt ustanawia w swej refleksji pomiędzy faktami a uwarunkowaniami ludzkiej egzystencji.

The article analyses the philosophical contexts of the ideological heritage of Volodymyr Barvinskyi (1850‒1883) ‒ the leading representative of the young generation of Galychyna Ukrainian intelligentsia in the second half of the 19th century. He was not a philosopher by education; however, his theoretical outlook, supported by the brilliant intellect, comprehensive knowledge and vivid imagination, clearly represented the practical nature of the Slavic philosophical tradition and humanistic reflection in general. The analysis was conducted on the basis of the selected texts by V. Barvinskyi. Taking into account their content, the three following planes have been outlined: a historiosophical one, a social-philosophical one and the plane of applied ethics. On these grounds it has been observed how the author perceived and comprehended the contemporary trends of world emancipation of nations and individuals, and what arguments he used to ‘ground’ them for the subsequent implementation in the social realities of ‘the small fatherland’.
W ostatnich latach w polskiej socjologii pojawia się coraz więcej opracowań odnoszących się do historii. To zainteresowanie przeszłością jest dość nowym zjawiskiem, biorąc pod uwagę prezentystyczny charakter badań socjologicznych. Tekst zawiera prezentację wyników badania przeprowadzonego w 2020 r. w środowisku polskich socjologów, którzy zajmują się przeszłością i mają doświadczenie w analizach historycznych. Przeprowadzono 24 indywidualne wywiady pogłębione (IDI). Omówiono opinie o roli przeszłości, własne doświadczenia badanych, uzasadnienia sięgania do historii, sposoby realizacji takich badań oraz napotykane w nich problemy. Inne ważne kwestie to relacje z historykami, szanse współpracy interdyscyplinarnej oraz strategie budowania kariery naukowej. Analiza pokazuje obraz powstającego w Polsce środowiska socjologów historycznych i główne obszary ich zainteresowań badawczych.

There has been a significant increase in historical studies in Polish sociol-ogy. This interest in the past is quite a recent phenomenon given the pre-sentistic nature of sociological research. The text contains a presentation of the results of a study conducted in 2020 among Polish sociologists who deal with the past and have experience in historical analyses. Twenty-four individual in-depth interviews (IDI) were conducted. Opinions on the role of the past, the respondents’ own experiences, justifications for referring to history, ways of carrying out such research and the problems encountered in it were discussed. Relations with historians, opportunities for interdis-ciplinary cooperation and strategies for building a scientific career are also important issues. The analysis shows the identity and main fields of interest of the emerging community of historical sociologists in Poland.
Perseveration of motifs in Jerzy Ficowski’s poetry Reading Ficowski’s poems requires researchers of his work to be erudites, thanks to which it is easier for them to move smoothly through the meanders of tradition and culture but also of everyday life presented in Ficowski’s image of the world. The image itself consists of the recurring (in every poetry volume) motifs and depictions. While reading Ficowski’s poems it is difficult not to notice this repetitiveness – sometimes exact and detailed, sometimes modified. An attempt to systematize a phenomenon such as perseveration of motifs in Ficowski’s poems led me to identifying the following thematic areas: memory and attitude towards the past, glorification of everyday life and elements belonging to it, proverbs and sayings as elements of folklore occurring in this poetry. In this article, through the analysis of Ficowski’s poems a phenomenon of perseveration of motifs used by a poet to create his own image of the world was shown. Key words: perseveration; past; memory; everyday life; proverbs; myth; folklore;
To odkrycie pozwoliło przezwyciężyć ograniczenia paradygmatu modernizacji imitacyjnej. Utorowało drogę do stawiania kwestii polskiej drogi do nowoczesności i własnego miejsca w globalizującym się świecie. Poprzez historyczną analizę można dojść do uznania swoistości polskiej drogi, nie odrzucając jednocześnie wypracowanych przez socjologię teorii, metod i pojęć.

Sociological interpretations of systemic change after 1989 contain many references to the recent and more remote past. The new social reality was described and diagnosed by showing the important role of post-socialist remnants. They were seen as obstacles in creating the new social order. In those times, the ideology of a swift and quick transition to market democracy was popular. So the durability and permanence of elements from the communist era was not under scientific scrutiny. As time passed and the new social order seemed to set, sociologists started to explore this uncompleted and imperfect social reality called post-communism. They analyzed its hybrid nature, in which the new and old elements are combined. As Poland started the process of integration with the EU social scientists paid attention to the external context of Polish transformation in the longue duree processes. They 'found' historical backwardness and peripheral status of Eastern Europe. This allowed them to overcome the limitations of the modernization theory and to put forward an issue of the Polish route to modernity. The historical approach enables sociologists to think about Poland's own place in the globalizing world.
The aim of this article is to interpret two novels by Róża Ostrowska (1926–1975) – Wyspa (1960) and unfinished, published posthumously Czas mój osobny (1977) – which occupy an important place in Polish literature of the 1950s and 1960s. These novels take place in two time-space – nowadays in Kashubia and in the past in the Vilnius region. For the writer, these are significant autobiographical places. In the construction of the story and characters, Ostrowska used her own life experience. This is, therefore, a writing based on autobiography and self-fiction. The writer used personal experience to take up important issues regarding human existence (life, passing away, love, death) and identifying. In these novels, an important philosophy of humanity is inscribed. The basic key to reading them is time – an individual time, an interoralized one, a “separate one” – associated with human existence and the functioning of human memory. The way the time worked in these novels allowed the writer to introduce into the structure of her novel a myth of a place and an individual. Our analysis leads to interesting conclusions: first of all, Ostrowska’s prose turns out to be an original combination of autobiography (or rather self-fiction) with mythology, whose aim is not so much the elevation of past or present reality, but rather the creation of a kind of “necro-narration”, taken as if from the post-mortem perspective. Therefore, Wyspa and Mój czas osobny are not political, moral or psychologicalnovels, but mythical ones.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest interpretacja dwu powieści Róży Ostrowskiej (1926–1975). Wyspa (1960) i nieukończony, wydany pośmiertnie Mój czas osobny (1977) zajmują ważne miejsce w polskiej literaturze lat 50. i 60. XX wieku. Analiza prowadzi do ciekawych wniosków.
The study deals with the problem of the significance of history and history attributed to contemporary Polish society in the context of national identity. On the basis of representative surveys from recent years, the author tries to answer the following questions: To what extent Poles are interested in the history of their own country? How much is the history of the national community the source of pride or shame? To what extent is knowledge of history in postulated patriotic attitudes and is at all an important criterion for recognizing someone as a Pole? The conducted analysis leads to the conclusion that the common past is one of the key elements of the contemporary national identity of Poles.

The major aim of this article is to analyse the concept of revolution and changes within the theory of revolution. Theorising about radical social changes raised questions which still have not been answered: how is revolution different from other social changes? Does it have the beginning and the end? Is it a result of chance or a necessity? Why does it take place at a particular time, in a given place? How does it evolve? These basic problems are still the subject of study today.

The article concerns the problem of the relation between the function of family photos in the culture of Subcarpathian, rural communities, and the ways of organizing time there. The author reconstructs the history of bottom-up photographic practices and shows their relations with the processes of modernization. He describes how economic and social changes were associated with fluctuations in the form and functions of vernacular pictures. He is also interested in contemporary ways of using old photographs. The article proves that initiatives such as local digital archives are important forms of preserving the local identity and popularizing tradition. Nevertheless, the basic aim of the article is to define the place of vernacular photography in the process of creating contemporary constructions of the past and present. Based on ethnographic field research conducted in one of the communities near Rzeszów, the author proves that photos can become a link between two types of the past and tradition – experienced as a pattern and interpreted as a text. As such, they are a form of dynamic mediators that cope with long-lasting and radical cultural change.

Artykuł dotyczy relacji pomiędzy funkcją rodzinnych zdjęć w kulturze podkarpackich wiejskich społeczności a obecnymi tam sposobami porządkowania czasu. Interesują go także współczesne sposoby wykorzystania starych fotografii.

The article relates to biographical studies, which have recently seen a veritable revival. The reflections in this are related to the phenomenon of human memory, within which the author has described two areas – spaces, which she metaphorically describes as the garden of remembrance and the shrubs of nonexistence. The author makes an attempt at showing the motives, the reason mobilising a person to write autobiographical texts, relations of their life or writing down their memories. The author bases her reflections on pieces of narration from authors of published materials of an autobiographical nature, such as journals, diaries, memoirs or letters. The fragments in question demonstrate that the motivation for making the effort of writing down one's reflections and memories is very often the will and need to preserve experiences. Quite often there is a sort of obligation, an internal imperative, which is difficult to ignore. Further motives enumerated by the author are, among others: a groundbreaking occurence in our lives (which shows us the importance of memories); a need for cleansing and consolation (the so-called katharsis); a need to understand and tame reality; a willingness to share suffering and pain with others; a will to revive a motivation to live and to make a trip towards knowledge of the self, or a need to escape what surrounds us and we do not understand.
In the case of vintage crime fiction, the blurred affiliation to different cultural circulations derives from the problematisation of the image of the past employed in the construction of the narration. It cannot be considered within one of the two domineering artistic strategies typical for the description of the “past events”: apologetic or revisionist, both sharing the conviction that the cultural memory of a reader must be somehow altered. Thus, it is not without importance what readers of vintage crime fiction – as the consumers of cultural goods – really remember, how they do it, and most importantly – what is the purpose of the remembering. The above mentioned issues belong to three types of memory that are employed at the moment of reading: the prop room of the narration world; relation between the literary image and its correspondence, or lack of correspondence, with reader’s knowledge; and the functionalisation/instrumentalisation of memory. These three have been isolated in order to define, in a more transparent manner, various aspects of the core subject – that is, the presence of the past in texts of popular culture on the basis of vintage crime fiction.

Rozmyta przynależność do różnych obiegów kulturowych wynika w przypadku kryminału retro z problematyzacji wizji przeszłości, wykorzystywanej do konstrukcji świata przedstawionego.
This article is an attempt to reconstruct the perceptions of 1989 of members of parliament who had a key influence on the systemic changes. The author traces the similarities, differences, and transformations of their narratives on this subject. The article is based on interviews conducted as part of two studies (the first was conducted in 1994–1995, the second in 2018–2020) with the same seven leading Polish politicians from the ruling and opposition political groups. The author describes both studies, with an explanation of the methodology and an analysis of the collected material. Both are presented from the perspective of a researcher belonging to this generation of sociologists, for whom the materials from the first study have become mainly a historical source and were the basis for the work involved in the second research project. The analysis focuses on the similarities and differences in interpreting themes at two points in time, for instance, perceptions of 1989, descriptions of the political elite and its relationship with society, and ways of presenting the phenomena generally referred to as “the transformation.”

The aim of my article is to present some reflections on the connection between the way of existence of the past (as we are entitled to see it) and our approach to dying and death. The basis of my reflections is a certain view of Plato’s words „μελέτη θανάτου” (Phaedo, 81 a) in combination with Parmenidean „τὸ γὰρ αὐτὸ νοεῖν ἐστίν τε καὶ εἶναι” (Περί φύσεως, B3), which seems to be permissible and intelectually beneficial result of looking at these parts of their works in the light of ἄσκησις: philosophy understood as an art of wise living and dying. One of the most important messages of ancient philosophy is probably the notion that what can be thought, has to exist. If so-as thinking (remembering) about the past is more reliable than about the future- the past and the future must have different ontic status. Considering, e.g., C. D. Broad’s growing universe theory, it may be acceptable to recognize someone’s death as another layer of his existence, which does not destroy the previous layers. It allows to change a view of, firstly, future or actual absence of deceased person, secondly - inevitable coming of (to) death.
The aim of the article entitled “Between memory and self-formation: about familiar identity in Tra due mari [Between Two Seas] by Carmine Abate” is to explore the motif of familiar identity in the above-mentioned novel. The article is divided into four parts, the main two being devoted to identity in the light of the role of memory and self-formation. Regarded as one of the most famous Italian contemporary writers, in 2012 Abate received Italy’s Campiello Prize for his novel La collina del vento [The Windy Hill]. It is worth noting that in his fiction Abate explores many aspects that are typical of migrant literature such as the journey motif, linguistic barriers, and, above all, a feeling of non-belonging to the host culture. Delineating in Tra due mari the story of the Bellusci family, the author presents the influence that the past and self-formation has on identity.

The aim of the paper is to point at the way in which contemporary writers use collective memory connected with Olsztyn, the town in which traces of the past can be seen in architectural and cultural landscape. Quoting after Elżbieta Rybicka definition of the memorials by the French researcher Pierre’a Nora, it can be assumed that memories concerning the past are kept by topographic places and monuments: statues, cemeteries and architecture. In the generation of people born in 70s won strategy which is called by Bartosz Korzeniewski ”de-browning” of history. The authors referred to the sings of the town’s past very critically. It was not until the first decade of the 21st century when the perspective of the description of Olsztyn’s everyday life changed. It can be noticed in the crime stories written by Tomasz Białkowski, short story by Michał Kotliński and crime story Rage by Zygmunt Miłoszewski.
Born in a small town near Olsztyn, Kowalewski is one of the most recognizable writers of Warmia and Masuria. In his prose, especially in his short stories Powrót do Breitenheide (Return to Breitenheide) and Wieczór autorski (Reading), he explores the German presence in a region that belonged to Germany until 1945. Kowalewski describes the differences between the German and Polish world views and aesthetic feeling. The writer also presents his personal attitude to German history and everyday life he knew as a young man. This manuscript critically discusses the point of view presented by Kowalewski.
The work represents an attempt at interpretation of the drama by Imre Madách The Tragedy of Man from the philosophy of history perspective. After discussing the initial three images of the work that was necessary considering the laws governing the world formulated there, it analyses only the eleventh image taking place in the 19th c. London. That episode is of key importance as it present the times contemporary to the author and it allows to look later from that perspective at the past and the future of the fates of humanity presented by Madách revealing the conceptions concerning them characteristic for the 19th c.
The article presents the role of memory, which is a base of book Singer. Landscapes of memory. They have been cited in the thesis theorists who deal with the issue scientifically memory, among other things, Pierre Nora. The aim of the article is to present the work of Paweł Jaszczuk, an author of crime novels associated with the Warmia and Mazury region. He was the laureate of the second edition of the Grand Caliber Award in 2005. The presentation of his crime novels is to show that in his creative method, on the one hand, there is a visible tendency to emphasize topics related to the past, and on the other hand, the mechanism of combining historical narrative with pop culture threads.
