The present article provides an introduction to the new history of psychology within the framework of critical perspective while offering some methodological solutions for contemporary historical research in psychology. We propose a new model of research for conducting studies in the history of psychology. This approach is predominantly concerned with reconstructing crypto thought styles, acknowledging the existence of peripheral sources of knowledge about human psychological life, and revealing hidden lines of inquiry, which will be presented using a contextual approach to the history of psychology. In this analysis, psychological knowledge will be treated as a product of social activities that occur un-der specific historical conditions and define the scope of psychological research. The proposed to examine history of psychology and investigative practice in a specific context will allow for deeper insight into the world’s history of psychology and provide new methods for studying psychological schools of thought and ideas established on the periphery of mainstream psychology. Finally, we offer words of encouragement for scholars engaging in a context-specific study of psychological thought and efforts made towards grasping the reality of a local soul.

The text presents the author’s study on the borderline of anthropology and psychology; the American psychological research was the starting point which showed the asymmetry of temporal value: people value more the future events than past ones. The author decided to check what events are more highly valued – past or future – in different countries with differences in duration of a history of a state among the representatives of so called individualistic or collective cultures. The article shows the theoretical and methodological preparations to the projected research among the foreign students in Gdańsk in the perspective of psychological anthropology.

Alfred Irving Hallowell (1892–1974), a seasoned researcher of the Ojibwe culture, is known today primarily as a precursor of the anthropological theory of the “new animism”. A student of Franz Boas and a friend of Edward Sapir, he was not only a prominent figure of the culture and personality school, but also proved to be one of the most interesting psychological anthropologists of the 20th century. His works on the Ojibwe indigenous taxonomy prefigured the achievements of ethnoscience, and those on the evolution of human behavior adumbrated the development of sociobiology. Conducted in the 1930s, Hallowell’s fieldwork among the Berens River Ojibwe resulted in numerous academic papers, one of which – the 1960 Ojibwa Ontology, Behavior, and World View – years later became particularly influential in anthropological research on animism. This article presents Hallowell’s intellectual biography and discusses his research on the Ojibwe culture along with the concepts he used or developed, concepts that for many researchers became the key to unlocking new conceptualizations of the problem of animism.

Chodziło mu o stworzenie metateoretycznej bazy dla możliwie wszystkich z natury nieporównywalnych do siebie ujęć psychologicznych w celu umożliwienia im owocnego dialogu.

The recently deceased Adrian van Kaam CSSp is considered to be one of the founders of phenomenologico-existential approach in psychology. His works stand at the beginning of humanist and existential psychology in the United States. Dialogue between psychology and philosophy, one of his postulates, is a common characteristic of this period in the development of psychology. While similar to V. Frankl's multi-dimensional anthropology, Van Kaam's research project appears to have been much more ambitious. His aim was to construct a meta-theoretical foundation for all the essentially different psychological currents in order to enable fruitful dialogue among them. However, Van Kaam's proposal was not welcomed enthusiastically by the psychological community, and the author himself remains unknown to the general public, being only occasionally mentioned in manuals of the history of psychology. This paper is an attempt to provide the Polish audience with a more exhaustive presentation of van Kaam's scientific heritage in the fields of psychological theory, psychotherapy, and scientific spirituality as well as to explain why his research has not become an integral part of the history of psychology.
