The article discusses the role of public intellectuals, with particular emphasis on scholars specializing in the study of religions. While various functions and aims of public intellectuals are taken into account, the article focuses primarily on risks related to scholars’ engagement in public discourse. The history of the academic study of religion shows that many of its representatives were involved in various ideological endeavors, including political ideologies. It is argued that the main role of the public intellectual in the study of religion is not to be a functionary of religious institutions nor even an interpreter of religious traditions, but a critical researcher who impartially popularizes knowledge about religions and highlights the mechanisms underlying the dynamics of the religious world.

No Sinecure Acting as Public Intellectual in Education

The author has earlier made a plea for educators acting as public intellectuals in society to counteract still inuential neo-liberal tendencies in educational policies and practices. Against emphases on overstretched attention for measurable output and accountability in education, the aim of education in schools is formulated in terms of holistic personhood formation. Interviewing three educators in dierent phases of their carrier, it becomes clear that working in academia nowadays it is no sinecure to act as a public intellectual. The author also presents his own experiences in dierent roles, and makes clear that the instructional niche one is working in could be of utmost importance for really taking that role. To realize a change, it is, according the author, necessary to stop with too much focus on highly cited publications in academic journals, and on individual researchers instead of on research groups working collectively together in joint research programs and with societal partners.

Pieter De Buysser is een Vlaamse filosoof, essayist, dramatist en romanschrijver. Hij reist met zijn theaterstukken door heel Europa. De vertaling van zijn debuutroman De Keisnijders is in 2016 in Tsjechië gepubliceerd. De Buysser is een typisch voorbeeld van een publieke intellectueel, een subtiel geëngageerde, sociaal-voelende kunstenaar. Deze bijdrage neemt Thomas Vaessens’ De wraak van de roman als uitgangspunt. In dit artikel beargumenteer ik waarom ik Pieter De Buysser beschouw als een onderdeel van de hedendaagse literaire stijl van het post-postmodernisme. Deze stijl bouwt voort op het postmodernisme en bekritiseert het tegelijkertijd. Aan de hand van voorbeelden uit De Buyssers’ werk beargumenteer ik wat ik als taak van een publieke intellectueel begrijp en hoe De Buysser deze rol vervult. Aan de hand van het voorbeeld van De Buysser toon ik de huidige behoefte aan publieke actieve persoonlijkheden die betrokkenheid tonen in sociale en politieke debatten.

Pieter De Buysser jest flamandzkim filozofem, eseistą, dramaturgiem i powieściopisarzem, który ze swoimi sztukami teatralnymi podróżuje po całej Europie. Tłumaczenie jego debiutanckiej powieści De Keisnijders zostało opublikowane w Czechach w 2016 r. De Buysser jest typowym przykładem „społecznego intelektualisty”, oddanego artysty, który czuje potrzebę społecznego zaangażowania. Tło niniejszego artykułu stanowi powieść De wraak van de roman (Zemsta powieści) Thomasa Vaessensa. Autorka niniejszego artykułu przedstawia argumenty, które pozwalają mu sklasyfikować Pietera De Buyssera jako reprezentanta współczesnego stylu literackiego zwanego „postpostmodernizmem”. Styl ten opiera się na postmodernizmie, kwestionując jednocześnie jego dorobek. Na przykładzie prac De Buyssera autorka wyjaśnia, jak należy rozumieć zadania publicznego intelektualisty i jak sam De Buysser spełnia tę funkcję. Postać De Buyssera posłużyła autorowi artykułu do ukazania bieżącej potrzeby publicznego zaangażowania jednostek w społeczne i polityczne debaty.

Pieter De Buysser is a Flemish philosopher, essayist, dramatist and novelist. He travels with his theater pieces around Europe. The translation of his debut novel De Keisnijders is published in 2016 in the Czech Republic. De Buysser is a typical example of a public intellectual, a subtly committed artist, who feels socially involved. This contribution is based on Thomas Vaessens’ De wraak van de roman (The revenge of the novel) as the starting point. In this article I argue why I consider Pieter De Buysser to be a part of the contemporary literary style of “post postmodernism”. This style builds on postmodernism and at the same time challenges it. On the examples from de Buyssers’ works I argue what I understand as a task of a public intellectual and how does De Buysser fulfil this role. On the example of De Buysser I show the current need of publicly active personalities to engage themselves in social and political debates.
