On 7 February 1919, head of State Józef Piłsudski, established, in a decree, the Supreme Office of State Audit. Since then, for almost a century, the Supreme Audit Office has been the guardian of public money spending. Its tasks, set out in the decree, have remained unchanged until today, although the nature and position of NIK has changed several times, as well as the conditions in which it has operated.
