Nadesłany do redakcji poparty nie tylko refleksją, ale też doświadczeniem autora, emocjonalny, subiektywny list jest jednym z niewielu, jeżeli nie jedynym, publikowanym na łamach pism branżowych głosem w dyskusji dotyczącej zasadności prac publicznych podejmowanych przez archiwa. Jego autor jest użytkownikiem archiwów, ale też czynnym zawodowo archiwistą. Ponadto, co daje się wyczuć w tekście, należy do tej części klientów archiwów, którzy dostrzegają i doceniają misję archiwów i znaczenie zgromadzonych w nich archiwaliów, a także potencjał tych placówek w zakresie ról, jakie mogą odgrywać we współczesnym społeczeństwie z jednej strony, z drugiej chciałby, aby ten potencjał był znany i dostępny dla wszystkich, nie tylko użytkowników zainteresowanych skorzystaniem z zasobu, ale też osób, które dotychczas nie poznały archiwum.

The author in his letter to the editor presents his own vision of carrying out archives’ tasks that arise from the public principle of archives. He is concerned especially with stagnation and passive role of archives in promoting their collections. To justify his theses the author conducted a survey among a group of his friends. He asked them four questions that tested their knowledge of archives and archival collections. Answers proved earlier conjectures to be true and were similar to the author’s experience; they showed that the society has poor knowledge of archives and their collections. The author proposed some general solutions, referring especially to actions taken by museums.

Autor w liście do redakcji prezentuje własną wizję realizacji zadań archiwów wynikających z zasady publiczności. Zaniepokojony jest zwłaszcza stagnacją archiwów i ich bierną rolą w zakresie promowania swoich zasobów. W celu poparcia swoich tez przeprowadził badanie ankietowe wśród grupy znajomych. Zadał im cztery pytania sprawdzające ich wiedzę na temat archiwów i ich zasobów. Odpowiedzi na nie potwierdziły wcześniejsze przypuszczenia i były zgodne z własnym doświadczeniem autora, ukazały nikłą znajomość archiwów i ich zasobów w społeczeństwie. Autor zaproponował pewne ogólne rozwiązania, zwłaszcza nawiązujące do działań podejmowanych przez polskie muzea.
