The aim of the paper is to assess the impact of electronic books on the Polish book market, including publishers’ off ering and organisation of work. The main method of obtaining information used by the author was in-depth interviews based on a structured scenario. The interviews were conducted with representatives of fifteen companies from various segments of the market offering electronic publications. The author attempted to established the moment of each publisher’s entry into the e-publication market, type of the publisher, ways of distributing the files, the production process, attitude of the publisher to digital publications. An analysis of the information obtained has demonstrated considerable differences in the speed of adoption of new book formats by the various segments of the market. The strongest turn to digital content concerns educational and specialist literature. Publishers of fiction and books for children have reached a state which satisfies readers. They are reluctant to experiment further with digital content because of the high cost of its production and low profits, and in the case of children’s literature — because of the belief of some adult customers that e-publications are not books. However, there is evidence to suggest that publishers deliberately do not support the development of the e-publication market and even hamper it, e.g. by failing to provide information about non-printed book formats on their websites. Yet it should be acknowledged that in recent years everyone has acquired at least basic knowledge of the opportunities created by e-publications and limitations of their production and distribution. Publishers’ employees have acquired basic competences, contacts with technology companies and file distributors have been established. The publishers are now waiting for further developments.

The article presents the activities of the book publishers in Łódź in the years 1945–1956. After the liberation from the German occupation, the city became the seat of nationwide publishers: Czytelnik, Książka, Wiedza. Private publishing houses were established by the pre-war publishers, booksellers and printers, e.g. Kazimierz Pawlak, Stanisław Jamiołkowski, Zbigniew Kozierkiewicz, Władysław Krauze. They published classics of the Polish and world literature, scientific and popular science publications and handbooks. There were also publishing cooperatives among which the SW „Polonista” – the publisher of literary studies dissertations – and Łódzki Instytut Wydawniczy that specialized in children and young adult literature, played the leading role. The publications were prepared by the numerous city institutions, e.g.: Łódź Scientific Association, the State Book Institute, the Library of the University of Łódź, the City Art Gallery in Łódź, Textile Research Institute, Military Research- Publishing Institute. Jewish publishers issued works recording Jewish martyrology, bellelettres and writings devoted to Palestine. From 1949 to 1950 publishers who were not socialized were eliminated from the market. Private publishers from Łódź also liquidated their companies, cooperatives were closed down or connected with the central superior structures. From 1950 to 1956 there were two professional scientific presses: Łódź Scientific Association and the Łódź Branch of the Polish Scientific Publishers. For numerous institutions book publishing was an addition to their basic activities. They published specialist literature, needed by experts working in different industry branches (cotton, rubber, leather, etc.) as well as prints for social workers. Łódź repertoire was completed by books prepared by cultural institutions, National Front propaganda publishers and Diocesan Curia’s presses

The article is devoted to the possibilities authors have today to publish their works. They give up the traditional path, inevitably associated with judgement and selection carried out by a commercial publishers and opt for an alternative route: a vanity press (vanity publishing) or a self-publishing platform. Not so long ago it became possible to self-publish e-books alongside (or instead of) paper books. The growing significance of this phenomenon is unequivocally evidenced by the tendencies observed in recent years on the Polish book market: a rise in the number of registered publishing entities and number of published works (including first editions) as well as a decrease in the total output and average number of copies published. Self-publishing increasingly becomes a conscious choice: authors want to be sure that their works will be published, they want to have a bigger say in shaping its substantive and editorial form and — using their own ideas, time and money in publicity activities — to achieve fame and fi nancial success.

In the present study, taking the example Yves Grevet’s dystopian trilogy for youth Méto and its Polish translation, we explore the collective and dialogical nature of the translation process and analyse the cooperation between the translator and representatives of the publishing world at the stage of production of the translation. Using ethnographic methods (interviewing, document analysis), we try to answer to the following questions: Who cooperates with the translator at this stage? And how does this cooperation take place? We first present the intermediaries involved in the drafting of the translated text and then go on to observe the negotiations which took place between these agents and the translator about the translation of the names of the characters and the style. The analysed translation project presented a large number of potential risks, which seems to have led to a true cooperation between the agents involved in the process.

The subject of the article is a research into the influence exerted by the publisher on the way and scope of rendering third culture elements in the translated text. The concept of the foreign in translation, idea of third culture elements and the issue of patronage in the literary system will be discussed in turn. The research material is a story in English titled “The Room in Le Dragon Volant” from a collection In a Glass Darkly, written by the 19th century Irish writer, Sheridan Le Fanu and its translation into Polish by the author of the article, published under the title "Pokój w gospodzie Le Dragon Volant", in a collection W ciemnym zwierciadle. The research will involve an analysis of translation of selected examples of third culture elements, a term of address and two proper nouns in French and the discussion of recommendations from the editor regarding their transposition in the Polish language. The result of negotiations between the editor and the translator and the consequences of the adopted solution for the achieved level of foreignness in the target text will be presented. Finally, conclusions regarding the influence exerted by the publisher on the way of translation of third culture elements and the role of translator in the process of their rendering in the target language will be formulated.

In this paper we consider the theoretical work of the translatologist André Lefevere and apply his model in practical study. Its focus is the analysis of the work of two Polish publishing houses: Afera and Książkowe Klimaty in the context of Lefevere’s work. The Afera Publishing House was created in the year 2010 and the Książkowe Klimaty Publishing House in 2013, in which year they published 11 books. Through their activity they familiarize many readers with interesting books by worth knowing new Czech authors. Their work depends on a very important condition — the close and careful cooperation of said authors with translators and editors during their text preparation process, as well as their commitment to very high quality graphic design. As a result, Afera and Książkowe Klimaty have managed to establish their fame as publishing houses proposing high quality literature of Czech origin. Their focus group is people who are interested only in the highest quality Czech literature, which is the reason why books they publish match their expectations so well.

The article described the publishing practices that were used by the publishers living in the 18th century. They were shown on the example of the activities of Georg Markus Knoch (1695-1759), one of the thriving acting Gdansk’s booksellers and publishers. Knoch was born in Wroclaw, made his first steps in the profession in Wittenberg. Then he arrived in Gdansk in 1728 where he opened the Bookstore on Piwna Street. He published approximately one hundred titles, several of which were title editions. Reissues of the title editions appeared in his publishing for a number of reasons. Most of the time, Gdansk‘s bookseller took over parts of the other publishers‘ titles; it happened due to their death, or due to the closure or change of the owner of the print shops. Wanting to get rid of some of the unsold copies of the books was the other reason of publishing some of his title editons. In this case he would have either lightly modified the editions, or he would have put the information on the title edition saying that it is an another issue, suggesting to potential customers that they are dealing with a completely new work, or that the first edition was a great success and it needed reissuing. Publishing practices used by Kanch show how often publishers in the 18th century were unable to sell many of the titles.

This article contains the characteristics of privatization processes in Wrocław’s regional newspaper „Słowo Polskie”. As a case study approach it presents typical transition from a government-owned enterprise, through commercial law company to a media corporation with foreign capital. Through the interviews conducted with the editors-in-chief and CEOs of publishing houses the study raises fundamental questions on the inevitability of media concentration processes and quality of the media. The author’s long cooperation with the newspaper, direct participation in the daily editorial work and transformation of publisher’s ownership, gives the added empirical value for the study.

Artykuł zawiera charakterystykę procesu prywatyzacji dziennika regionalnego „Słowo Polskie” we Wrocławiu od 1989 r. Stanowi studium przypadku – typowego przechodzenia od przedsiębiorstwa państwowego, przez spółdzielnię pracy, spółkę prawa handlowego, aż do koncernu medialnego z obcym kapitałem. W wywiadach z redaktorami naczelnymi i prezesami wydawnictw zostały postawione fundamentalne pytania o nieuchronność procesów koncentracji kapitału i jakość mediów.

Owo rozproszenie zostało poddane analizie w artykule.

The article refers to changes which happened in the field of literary patronage (considered as a material support for bookmen) in the XIX century and analyses causes and effects of those changes. It indicates the birth of capitalism as a factor that remodelled the relations within the literary life, especially financing the authors. The article also analyses the changes in human mentality, significance of the emergence of modern literary public and its influence on the authors by means of subscription; it observes the character of modern publisher (bookseller and printer) and influence of their activity on the changes. The consideration is seen from the angle of changes in patronage because the described factors significantly contributed to the decline of this institution in its old form. However, before it happened (in the XX century) there was a transitional state between the old lordly patronage and the new institutional one provided by the state. This transitional patronage was somehow dispersed and the dispersion is analysed in the article.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s church cantatas hold a special place among composer’s works. Although they were primarily intended for use in the Lutheran church liturgy in order to deepen the understanding of readings from the Bible, they are at the same time masterpieces of highest artistic value. The cantatas, accompanying Bach throughout his artistic career, became a kaleidoscope of all the forms, techniques, motifs and musical means he employed. Forgotten after the composer’s death, the works were rediscovered in the 20th century. The first chapter of this work is devoted to the description of the cantatas and their performance history. The popularization of Bach’s cantatas was connected with both their inclusion in the concert repertoire and the development of recording industry. The first, single recordings of cantatas come from 1950s. Recordings of cantata cycles began soon after. As around two hundred cantatas survive to this day, each project of recording the complete cycle excites interest among music lovers and professional critics. Until today, only a few recordings of the complete cycle of cantatas have been made, some of which deserve particular attention due to their high artistic value and cognitive significance. A detailed discussion of these selected renditions constitutes the second chapter. Apart from recordings of Bach’s complete cycle, there exists a number of recordings containing variously selected cantatas. Many of these have been internationally recognized as most important masterpieces of world phonography. These works are listed and compared in chapters two and three.

Kantaty kościelne Johanna Sebastiana Bacha zajmują szczególne miejsce wśród dzieł kompozytora. Będąc muzyką użytkową, przeznaczoną do wykonania w trakcie liturgii i służącą lepszemu zrozumieniu czytań biblijnych, są jednocześnie przykładem arcydzieł prezentujących najwyższe artystyczne walory. Charakterystyka i historia wykonawstwa kantat wypełnia I rozdział pracy.
