The paper is devoted to qualitative and modifying adjectives incorporated by Daniel Adam of Veleslavín into his dictionaries Dictionarium linguae latinae (published in 1579), Nomenclator tribus linguis (1586), Nomenclator quadrilinguis and Silva quadrilinguis (both published in 1598). The adjectives are investigated in terms of word-formation and compared to the overall contemporary vocabulary as well as to the lexicon of the preceding Old Czech period. The majority of the adjectives used by Veleslavín belongs to the common humanistic vocabulary, many of them had been used continuously since the Old Czech period. Some lexemes were newly created by Veleslavín for the needs of his dictionaries (usually on the basis of foreign language patterns). In formation of the analysed adjectives, all word-formation procedures and almost all word formation types used for creation of qualitative and modifying adjectives in the Old and Middle Czech have been employed; using some of them, VeleslavÌn deviates from the contemporary average practice. Even some new, so far undescribed types of word formation, though existing since the Old Czech period, have been recorded, namely intensification of meaning by the prefix nad- or attenuation of meaning by the prefixes po- and pod-.

The paper deals with 400 adjectives (1046 tokens) excerpted from the textbooks of Slovene as a foreign language Gremo naprej and Slovenska beseda v živo 2. The author presents the frequency of the given adjective samples from the textbooks and classifies examined adjectives into classes of qualitative, relational, and possessive. Firstly, she assumed that the qualitative adjectives could be more frequent than relational on the lower level of learning. However, the samples from the textbooks show that the relational adjectives were more frequent in more basic Gremo naprej than in Slovenska beseda v živo 2, in which the qualitative adjectives are more often used. The article describes the way of adjective representation in the textbooks (lexicon, grammar, the texts building, titles). The paper shows also cultural content transferred by the adjectives.
