We investigate direct speech quotation in informal oral narratives by analyzing the contribution of bodily articulators (character viewpoint gestures, character facial expression, character intonation, and the meaningful use of gaze) in three quote environments, or quote sequences – single quotes, quoted monologues and quoted dialogues – and in initial vs. non-initial position within those sequences. Our analysis draws on findings from the linguistic and multimodal realization of quotation, where multiple articulators are often observed to be co-produced with single direct speech quotes (e.g. Thompson & Suzuki 2014), especially on the so-called left boundary of the quote (Sidnell 2006). We use logistic regression to model multimodal quote production across and within quote sequences, and find unique sets of multimodal articulators accompanying each quote sequence type. We do not, however, find unique sets of multimodal articulators which distinguish initial from non-initial utterances; utterance position is instead predicted by type of quote and presence of a quoting predicate. Our findings add to the growing body of research on multimodal quotation, and suggest that the multimodal production of quotation is more sensitive to the number of characters and utterances which are quoted than to the difference between introducing and maintaining a quoted characters’ perspective.

The aim of the article is to observe the similarities and differences concerning the formation of text by the writers of two Slavic Biblical-apocryphal narrations based on the analyses of the means of introduction of quotations in the Czech Život Krista Pána and in the Polish Żywot Pana Jezu Krysta by Baltazar Opec. The author of the article demonstrates that the texts were written at a similar stage of development of both vernacular languages and, consequently, they include structures at different levels of complexity – indirect speech coexists with direct speech and intermediate forms. The author indicates the differences and similarities in the way the metatext is constructed. For example, she contends that the author of ŽKP used direct speech much more often, introduced quotations serving as a commentary on specific events differently (e.g., from the Bible or Church Fathers), used different patterns when introducing the utterances of the protagonists of the story. Also, the author of the article shows that the quotations intertwined in the story Żywot Pana Jezu Krysta were more expensively modified in comparison to ŽKP. Moreover, the repertoire of structures used for the inclusion of reported speech into the main narration is richer in the Polish text.

The paper, assuming the general framework of Chomsky’s (2013a, 2015b) current version of the Minimalist syntax, investigates the syntax of quotation in light of ellipsis. I show that certain unexpected effects arising for quotational ellipsis are problematic for the standard feature valuation system and, especially, for the theory of phases. I discuss some effects of two possible interpretations of such ellipsis, as well as a constraint following from deviant antecedents, to show that the standard view on the internal syntax of quotational expressions should be reconsidered. The paper offers a new view on feature valuation, as well as the connection between the Narrow Syntax and the C-I interface, defined in terms of recursive typing taking place at the interface.

The paper presents an analysis of quotations as one of the basic elements that occur in intertextual field of Y. Andrukhovych novel ― “The Moscoviad”. Thanks to the numerous examples, the author shows the dialogical relations in which one text has got several concrete and evident references to the previous texts, identifying the source of borrowings and marking out the basic types of quotations according to their attributive degree.

This essay analyses and reflects upon the numerous intra- and intertextual references in Oswald Egger’s long poem “Herde der Rede” (1999). The recourse to prior literary models in terms of surprising reversals of form and content, self-quotations as well as reversals of his own figures of speech are counted among Egger’s distinctive poetic strategies. Alert − like a widely open ear – to voices from different religious and poetical traditions, the text perceives, integrates and plays with different poetic registers and language worlds (such as the Song of Solomon, the ancient Corpus Hermeticum, Hesiod, Vergil, Hölderlin, Rilke …). “Herde der Rede” is a highly dialogic and polyphonic text (in the sense used by M. M. Bakhtin). Ultimately, quotations, repetitions and reversals become strategies of a poetic discourse which uses literary and religious traditions as subtexts for a metapoetic speech.

Titles of research articles in the humanities, including linguistics, tend to be more creative and less informative than corresponding titles in exact sciences or medicine. In linguistics, pragmatic studies are an area where reported discourse, i.e. direct speech in the form of a full speech act, occurs relatively frequently in titles of research papers. This paper analyses the metonymic and cataphoric relations between such titles and article texts on the background of the functions of text titles. It also presents the results of a survey conducted among graduate students and aimed at finding out whether titles containing reported discourse in the form of speech acts are easier to memorize and attract more attention among the articles' potential readers.

The article is a part of outcome from a research project carried out by the author and devoted to quotations in Polish media and mass communication after 1989. The present elaboration includes an analysis of journalistic information, viewed as a particular kind of journalistic communication distinguishable from column writing due to its specific functions. A number of monographs and text books devoted to the development of the writing skills required for producing media texts are examined to single out those properties of journalistic information that the authors consider to be the most important. Within the context of the indications obtained in the process and the factographic pact between the author and the reader as it has been described by Zbigniew Bauer, the functions of quotation in direct speech are discussed. An attempt has been made to introduce a classification of persons using journalistic text in their presentations, while one of the their categories, a participant of described events, is examined more thoroughly.

This article reports part of a research project currently carried out by the authors devoted to the analysis of quoted speech used by Polish journalists in their discourse after 1989. The first part of the article was published in the previous volume of Poznańskie Studia Polonistyczne. The present part focuses on the characteristics of the participants (parties) in journalistic information. Prevailing and determining factors related to the number and the type of participants in journalistic information are presented, and fundamental functions of speech verbs (verba dicenti) are indicated. Citation is the most explicit form of inclusion of other-discourse in one’s discourse. The second part of the study provides more detailed analysis that includes the following categories: the category of witnesses, experts (practitioners) and that of experts (theoreticians). The third part of the article is due to be published soon.

The goal of this article is to provide an answer why late-Medieval poetry offers only two verses of the Lord’s Prayer. An analysis of the existing literature leads to a conclusion that only two requests exist, transformed in different ways: “forgive us our trespasses” and “but deliver us from evil”. The author of the article views this phenomenon in a broader context of the late medieval culture and explains the phenomenon by referring to the existing knowledge of the process of Christianisation in medieval Poland. An analysis of late medieval poetry with respect to the position of the Lord’s Prayer results in methodological conclusions (it is difficult to evaluate the nature of a specific fragment in a text due to the non-existent canonical version of the prayer) and conclusions about the language and the culture (the then religiosity). The absorption of the Lord’s Prayer is evident only in relation with fear and the broadly-defined superstitions as resulting from the intertwining Catholic and pagan beliefs. Their influence is reflected in late medieval literature where specific prayerrelated phrases were taken over. Quite possibly, this procedure was involuntary and unintentional. While the phrases lost their strictly prayer character, they managed to retain their magical function of such importance to praying.

This article is a part of research project that focuses on citations in media coverage in Poland after 1989; two earlier installments of the article have been included in earlier publications of “Poznańskie Studia Polonistyczne”. Part Three provides a discussion on and characteristics of the category of the average man in the street, ordinary people whose utterances are increasingly included in the journalistic narration. Taking the notion of everyday life, with which the demand for an ordinary man in the media is closely linked, as a starting point in the discussion, the authors proceed to characterize citations, along with their explanatory attributions, indicate their textual functions and analyse the categories that are revealed within the process: anonymity, transparency and singularity.

According to the report “We Are Social” (2021), one of the most important reasons why Internet users take to social media platforms are: “stay up-to-date with news and current events”, “seeing what’s being talked about”, and “sharing and discussing opinions with others”. They are all focused on quoting. Our research helped us to confirm the dominance of posts with quotations in social media (the institutional broadcasters’ profiles). Quotation can take various forms to produce different results. Direct quotations include direct speech, text islets, and pseudo-quotations; indirect quotations include indirect speech and narrated speech. Direct quotations in the form of various direct references accounted for 73% of quotations on Twitter and 61% on Facebook. This confirms the tremendous popularity of quotations in direct speech  – senders avoid allegations of being partial; after all they show the facts that speak for themselves. It is strategies of the senders which increase misinformation.

The article concerns the roles played by quotations and short literary forms in the process of popularizing literature through social media. Its main purpose is to review the most popular websites in Poland and the phenomena related to the subject in the title. The research methods used in the publication are qualitative methods, mainly: critical analysis of text, image and one of the newest methods: autoethnography. The qualitative assessment of this issue is complemented by the quantitative data of the social media, including the number of recipients of the pages, the coverage of the posts and the information provided. The article discusses the history of literature, the origins of literature on the Internet, Explains the issues of social media, and carefully analyzes selected cases of popularizing literary forms on the Internet.

In gesture studies character viewpoint and observer viewpoint (McNeill 1992) characterize co-speech gestures depending on whether the gesturer’s hand and body imitate a referent’s hand and body or the hand represents a referent in its entirety. In sign languages, handling handshapes and entity handshapes are used in depicting predicates. Narratives in Danish Sign Language (DTS) elicited to make signers describe an event from either the agent’s or the patient’s perspective demonstrate that discourse perspective is expressed by which referent, the agent or the patient, the signers represent at their own locus. This is reflected in the orientation and movement direction of the manual articulator, not by the type of representation in the articulator. Signers may also imitate the gaze direction of the referent represented at their locus or have eye contact with the addressees. When they represent a referent by their own locus and simultaneously have eye contact with the addressee, the construction mixes referent perspective and narrator perspective. This description accords with an understanding of linguistic perspective as grounded in bodily perspective within a physical scene (Sweetser 2012) and relates the deictic and attitudinal means for expressing perspective in sign languages to the way perspective is expressed in spoken languages.

Intertextual Masks of Joseph Conrad’s Reminiscences

The article analyses Joseph Conrad’s reminiscences from the perspective of intertextuality. The author argues that Conrad, in order to write about his biography, employed a number of intertextual masks – an intertextual filter. Enlarging on the events from his past life, he employed various literary conventions, eg. parody, travesty, quotation or paraphrase.

Alexander Eilers (born 1976) has not only made a name for himself as an aphoristic writer of several vo- lumes but has also assisted younger aphoristic authors whose aphorisms he has edited. With a doctorate in English language and literature at the University of Gießen he has occupied himself with the genre of aphorisms and written several meta-aphorisms. Repeatedly his texts that start with an individual word that in turn is defined by the addition of a proverbial expression. Other aphorisms begin with an expression that is expanded by a short commentary. Again and again expressions are questioned which at times leads to innovative statements by the mere substitution of a letter or word. Not only classical, biblical, and folkloric expressions appear, but Eilers also exhibits an extensive repertoire of quotations and proverbs. This traditional language material is manipulated and at times leads to expressive anti- proverbs. 386 texts of the 2142 aphorisms or 18% start from such formulaic expressions. They show that Eilers occupies himself intensively with proverbial language that he changes linguistically and thematically to insightful statements about the modern world.

This article discusses references to Polish literary works found in novels by Poznań-based author Małgorzata Musierowicz (born 1945). The protagonists of the 22-volume Jeżycjada series are literature lovers. They often quote famous Polish writers, from Ignacy Krasicki to another writer from Poznań – Marek Obarski (1947–1997). Quotations from literature, thanks to their wide platform of dissemination through school, songs and films, become part of the reproduced content category (reproduced word-groups). The novels by M. Musierowicz are also a platform of dissemination for Polish literary fiction.

Tématem studie jsou strategie literární reprezentace odsunu/vyhnání Němců z Československa v románech Němci Jakuby Katalpy (2012) a Die Unvollendeten Reinharda Jirgla (2003). Zaměřuje se na dva limitní způsoby literárního vzpomínání, paměť tělesnosti a alegorickou citaci, které v návaznosti na Aleidu Assmannovou chápe jako specifické „stabilizátory vzpomínky“. Němé materiální indexy otištěné do tělesnosti postav a věcí u Katalpy mohou přetrvat rozpad sociálních rámců vzpomínání pouze do té míry, do jaké vzpomínka zůstává ve své němotě mimo jakoukoli diskurzivitu, jež podléhá neustálé proměně. Podobně také strategie citace, která se snaží v modu „druhé přítomnosti“ dosáhnout prchavé aktuality vzpomínky na odsun, zvládá tuto operaci pouze za cenu roztříštění vzpomínky a její střídavé (sebe)reference. Studie se v závěru zaměřuje na specifika literárnosti těchto strategií vzpomínání a jejich praktické důsledky v současné české a německé kultuře vzpomínání.

The article is devoted to the determination of the status of precedent units (precedent names and expressions) in the system of intertextual means of contemporary Ukrainian media discourse. There was analyzed the phenomenon of intertextuality in the broad and narrow senses; the functions of precedent units that realize the main media discourse purpose of informing and influence were revealed. The analysis of the essence of precedence in linguistics gives grounds to distinguish three types of precedent phenomena: precedent texts, situations and personalities, as well as two types of precedent units: precedent names and expressions. The connection of precedent units and related concepts – winged words, aphorisms and idioms – was established. Based on a comparative analysis of the views of European and American scholars on the phenomena of intertextuality and precedence in linguistics there were singled out the means of direct and indirect appeal to prototext, which enroll the quotations and references, as well as the precedent units and allusions respectively.

In the novel Seventh Autobiography, writer Ota Filip established a wide range of strategies for using quotes from archival documents from the State Security Archive. The writer attempted to respond to public accusations of his collaboration with agents of Czechoslovak military intelligence in the 1950s when he betrayed his colleagues who were planning to escape to West Germany. In the late nineties this scandal led to the writer’s son’s suicide and forced Filip to write his autobiographical novel to deal with the burden of guilt. By using this quotation strategy the writer was able to reassess past events from the perspective of his current position to follow his personal and artistic development and redefine his identity following this chain of traumatic experiences. Quotation also allows us to follow the gradual interlinking of individual autobiographical motifs in wider structures and to observe the relations functioning between them, which enable the autobiographical space of the writer’s literary work to be established. An important and simultaneous process in this context is the development of literary communication between the writer and the recipient of his novel. For the first one, this is an opportunity to share his personal experience and observe how it influences the process of dealing with the problematic past. The main goal of the article is to present the essential strategies for quoting from archival documents in the text of Seventh Autobiography. The author of the study particularly emphasizes the influence of quotation in the field of relations between the actual author of the literary text and the agents holding his security files in the past and the way the disproportion in accessibility of source material on the part of the recipient of the novel influences the process of literary communication. The final result of conducting analytical activities in these fields creates a broader picture of the writer’s methods for dealing with his experiences.

As a point of departure the author comments on the fragmentary (quotation-like) presence of Shakespeare in contemporary culture. Then he goes on to use Roman Jakobson’s model of communication to analyse several examples of how the Shakespeare quotation has been appropriated by means of transference into a new context. Using Jakobson’s model enables us to study the changes which the original text undergoes in the process of cultural transmission.

Punktem wyjścia są konstatacje na temat fragmentarycznej („cytatowej”) obecności Szekspira w kulturze współczesnej. Następnie wykorzystano schemat komunikacji Romana Jakobsona do analizy wybranych przykładów przywłaszczeń tekstu szekspirowskiego w postaci cytatu przeniesionego w nowy kontekst. Zastosowanie schematu umożliwia wniknięcie w przetworzenia, jakim ulega znaczenie oryginału w procesie transferu kulturowego.
