Artykuł jest próbą rekonstrukcji i interpretacji poglądów Edwarda A. Milne’a dotyczących relacji między nauką i religią. Schematem interpretacyjnym jest zaproponowana przez I. Barboura klasyfi kacja: 1) konfl ikt, 2) neutralność, 3) dialog i 4) integracja. Poglądy Milne’a ewoluowały od postawy bliskiej niezależności, przez dialog ukierunkowany na konstruowanie spójnego obrazu świata, po integrację w postaci angażowania wyników nauki w uzasadnianie istnienia Boga-Stwórcy. O ile jego argumentacja z racjonalności przyrody jest akceptowalna, o tyle utożsamianie osobliwości początkowej z aktem stworzenia Wszechświata łamie reguły metodologii i nie znajduje poparcia w wiedzy przedmiotowej (kosmologicznej i teologicznej).

The paper is an attempt to reconstruct and interpret the views of E.A. Milne on the relationship between science and religion. This is related to I. Barbour’s fourfold typology: 1) confl ict, 2) independence, 3) dialogue and 4) integration. Milne’s view was evolving from a position close to independence, through dialogue aimed at constructing a coherent world-picture up to integration which engages science in justifi cation of the existence of God the Creator. His argument from the rationality of nature is acceptable, but identifi cation of the initial singularity with the doctrine of creation of the Universe breaks the methodological rules and is not supported by any subject knowledge (cosmology or theology).
