The aim of the article was to define social campaigns as a phenomenon, describe their typology, criteria of division and marketing role in popularizing readership. The text describes selected examples of campaigns promoting readership: national ("Cała Polska Czyta Dzieciom", "Biblioteki Sąsiedzkie", "Czytaj! Zobacz więcej", "Jak nie czytam, jak czytam", "Nie czytasz, nie idę z Tobą do łóżka", "Spotkajmy się w bibliotece"), regional ("Łódzkie czyta", Z książką na walizkach", "Zabajani. Bajeczne manewry literackie") and local ("Kwadrans na książkę", "Nie marnuj czasu na czekanie. Wykorzystaj na czytanie", "Olsztyn czyta", "Podróże z książką", "Zaczytana Dąbrowa"). The basis for the analysis consisted of internet websites and literature. The analysis presents social campaigns as a tool serving to popularize readership

In the article hypertext literature is presented in the context of the reading preference of young people and the deepening crisis of readership. The author justifies the value of e-literature in developing the reading interests of contemporary young people, demonstrating that digital works thanks to broken linearity, multilevel architecture, multimediality, and the combination of static and kinetic typography, digital works, guarantees a special kind of literary and entertainment feast combined with intellectual and creative inspiration. On the one hand, the recipient assorts with the attractive hybrid structure and has the possibility of reading based on making one’s own choices; on the other – the reader could still continue to develop reading comprehension skills, aesthetic sensitivity, emotional and rational intelligence, imagination, as well as a variety of other skills: interpretative, argumentative, analytic etc.

W artykule zaprezentowano literaturę hipertekstową w kontekście preferencji czytelniczych młodych ludzi i pogłębiającego się kryzysu czytelnictwa. Autorka uzasadnia wartość e-utworów w rozwijaniu zainteresowań czytelniczych współczesnej młodzieży, wykazując, że dzieła cyfrowe dzięki przełamanej linearności, wielopiętrowej architekturze, multimedialności, zespoleniu typografii statycznej z kinetyczną gwarantują swoistą literacko-rozrywkową ucztę, a przy tym intelektualno-twórczą inspirację. Odbiorca z jednej strony obcuje z atrakcyjną hybrydalną strukturą i otrzymuje możliwość lektury opartej na dokonywaniu samodzielnych wyborów, a z drugiej – wciąż może rozwijać zdolność czytania ze zrozumieniem, wrażliwość estetyczną, inteligencję emocjonalną i racjonalną, wyobraźnię, a także inne różnorakie umiejętności: interpretacyjne, argumentacyjne, analityczne itd.

Petr Voit is one of the leading representatives of Czech bibliology, an author of many publications from this area, including the monumental Encyclopaedia of Book (2006, 2008). His readership curriculum vitae can be located in the volume Knihy a jejichlidé. Čtenářské životopisy, prepared by JiřígoTrávníček (Brno 2013). The overall concept of readership biographies is based on the chronologic-issue based scenario, covering the genesis of the readership interests and the development of the reading practices throughout ones lifetime, their character, changes, influence on life, professional career etc. This volume includes 33 selected “readership- professional” biographies of the famous people professionally connected with book. The biography of Petr Voit (born 1056) covers his childhood and years of education, as well as the beginnings of professional career in the Communist Czechoslovakia, with the realities characteristic only to that period there, also covering the world of books, culture and science – deep censorship, ideologization. The key role in his readership initiation was played by the family book collections, containing volumes not available in libraries and bookstores in these years. The research interests in past literature and Czech book have been distilled way back at the beginning of his philological and philosophical studies; the book studies workshop has been formed in practice during his work in the Faculty of Bibliographyof the National Library of the Czech Republic and the Prague antique shop, already after the system shift. It was there where the Encyclopaedia started forming, which was finished in the Library in Strahov, where the author has been working since 2004

This paper reports a survey conducted in May 2010 on a nationally representative sample of fifteen-year-olds from 70 lower secondary schools. The general research question concerned the prevalence of Polish adolescents who did not read books after completing the phase of compulsory education. The aim of this study was to describe the place of books in teenage everyday life in terms of their reading for school, leisure, spontaneous choice of reading matter, their favourites, books they recommended, value placed on enjoyable reading and their social circle of readers. Gender was found to be a differentiating factor in the reading habits of these young people which the paper broadly describes.

In this paper the author discusses the effort to create a new concept of the interaction between a contemporary reader, being a pupil, student or teacher, and literature. Transitional changes to civilisation and culture occurring over the recent decades have had an impact on the situation of literature, which, as the art of speech, has acquired new carriers and has transformed traditional forms of its existence in culture, too. The addressee of literature is going to remain in dialogue with THE OTHER. This form of contact is becoming an absorbing form of dialogue: author – main character – addressee (tutee), as well as other recipients, being auditors. The new philosophy of THE OTHER corroborates the sense of this new modern notion of living up to literature formulated by Michał Paweł Markowski. It also derives from the insight into culture and theory of literature.

Throughout Gabriele d’Annunzio’s vast and multiform productions, Ovid’s presence shines through with the strength of a model both ancient and modern. Since his years at the “Cicognini”, he feels bound to Ovid by a similarity “in lyrical ways” and by a relationship of “consanguinity” based on their common origins. The assiduity in Ovid’s readings, testified to by the large number of volumes of the Augustan poet in the library of the Vittoriale, is reflected in a dense network of echoes – some perspicuous, others subtle – that can be found in the Vate’s most famous works. During his twilight years, d’Annunzio’s nocturnal exploration finds singular affinities with the Ovidian elegies of exile to which he feels attracted the most. Even in the nascent silent film industry, d’Annunzio, creator and forerunner of fashions, sees a prodigious form of visual art that has in Ovid a millenary antecedent. Beyond the unavoidable differences separating the two temporally distant authors, the paper attempts to outline an overall profile of the correspondences and possible equations between d’Annunzio and Ovid without pretense of exhaustiveness. In the wake of perspectives inaugurated by distinguished masters, it is an attempt to offer cues for interpreting, from the vestiges of classicism, d’Annunzio’s art within the Ovidian framework.

The article presents the results of representative surveys on readership conducted in Poland by the National Library and the problems of promoting reading by public institutions. In view of the general decline of reading and its intensity special attention should be paid to the role of public libraries. A new model of public libraries, and their new forms of activity create the potential of promoting reading. There are presented data illustrating the current status and condition of Polish public libraries. The condition of libraries depends on the policy of local government are very diversed. The National Programme for the Development of Reading was adopted by the Council of Ministers of the multiannual program for the years 2016-2020, in order to improve readership in Poland by strengthening the role of public libraries and school as local centers of social life which are the center of access to culture and knowledge.

This article focuses on how digital technologies are used in the reading practices of adolescents. The results presented here are drawn from a study of young people’s reading habits. One of its aims was to determine students’ online reading habits. Selected results are presented from the qualitative and quantitative stages of the study. The quantitative stage was conducted in November 2013 with 1721 students completing primary school and 1816 students from lower secondary school. The paper reviews its key findings about how students read books: offline or online, printed or on-screen, whether they look for information about books on the internet and whether they use the internet as a source of reading material.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badania sondażowego poświęconego czytelnictwu młodzieży. Badanie zrealizowano w maju 2010 r. na próbie reprezentatywnej uczniów klasy trzeciej z 70 gimnazjów. Jego wyniki pozwoliły na określenie społecznego zasięgu książki wśród gimnazjalistów, opisanie miejsca lektury książkowej wśród innych form aktywności w czasie wolnym młodzieży, jej aktywności czytelniczej w ramach obowiązku szkolnego i poza nim, wyborów i preferencji lekturowych, wartości przypisywanych satysfakcjonującej lekturze oraz społecznego obiegu książki. Wśród czynników różnicujących praktyki czytelnicze gimnazjalistów najsilniejsza okazała się płeć.

This study deals with contemporary Polish reading culture. The authors focus on three areas: (1) research at the National Library, particularly in relation to digital reading; (2) the new Polish Encyclopedia of Books (Encyklopedia książki), a work of colossal size and scope, as well as the state of current thinking on books and their social circulation, which has been fixed for some time; and (3) some individual sources of inspiration from Polish reflections and discussions on reading in the digital age. The authors examine all three areas against the backdrop of the current Czech situation, while endeavouring to ascertain the sociological causes behind the current large decline, and focusing primarily on the substantial reduction in graduates from the 40– population. One part of the study also focuses on digital reading, i.e. on how it is developing and which sectors of the Polish readership it most involves. They conclude that although the Polish readership has succeeded in slightly reducing the internal socio-demographic threshold (i.e. with the operation of progressive internal inclusion), as a whole it is fallinginto social exclusion.

Niniejszy tekst stanowi próbę uzupełnienia dotychczasowych badań nad czytelnictwem, zarówno z perspektywy księgo- i antropocentrycznej. Autorzy uwzględniają w nim socjologiczne pole obserwacji, gdzie na pierwszy plan wysuwa się społeczne oraz kulturowe i demograficzne uwarunkowania zachowań czytelniczych mieszkańców powiatu bialskiego w odniesieniu do korzystania z prasy drukowanej i elektronicznej. Co czytamy? Jak często sięgamy po ulubione czasopismo? Jak oceniamy preferowaną przez nas prasę? Jaki udział w obrębie prasy drukowanej ma prasa elektroniczna? W jakim kierunku zmierza czytelnictwo i jakie są jego perspektywy? Czy mamy do czynienia z modą na nieczytanie? Czy prasa elektroniczna stanowić może panaceum na współczesny kryzys czytelnictwa? Na te i inne pytania próbują odpowiedzieć autorzy tekstu odnosząc się zarówno do własnych badań, jak również ogólnopolskich danych na temat stanu obecnego i przyszłości czytelnictwa w Polsce.

This text constitutes an attempt to supplement the existing re search on readership, both from the perspective of books and anthropocentrism. In the text, the authors take into account the sociological field of observation, where social, cultural and demographic conditionings of reading behaviours of the inhabitants of the Biała Podlaska county relating to the use of written and electronic press come to force. What do we read? How often do we reach for our favourite magazines? How do we assess our preferred press? What role within the printed press is played by electronic one? In which direction is readership heading and what are its prospects? Are we dealing with a fashion not to read at all? Can the electronic press be a cure-all for the contemporary crisis of readership? For those and other questions the authors of the work try to find answers, referring both to their own research as well as the national data on the current state as well as the future of readership in Poland.

Artykuł ma charakter teoretyczno-empiryczny. W części teoretycznej zawarte są odniesienia do dwóch okresów życia człowieka: funkcjonowania młodych dorosłych i seniorów oraz ich wzajemnych relacji, a także informacje na temat kondycji współczesnego czytelnictwa. W części badawczej znajduje się omówienie wyników badań, dotyczące roli, jaką może odgrywać książka we wspólnych doświadczeniach międzypokoleniowych, jako temat potencjalnych rozmów i pretekst do spotkań.

The content of this article is both theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part contains references to two periods of human life: the functioning of young adults and seniors; and their mutual relations. The condition of book readership is discussed. The intergenerational relations are analyzed around present-day readership. The scientific element contains a discussion about the research results regarding the role that a book may play in present intergenerational experiences – as a subject of potential conversations and a pretext for meetings.
