There is some basis to the perennial fear that folklore draws every day nearer to extinction. But this is true not so much because the traditional sources of folklore are disappearing; it is so rather because the very idea of folklore has fallen on hard times. Folklore is less popular in the public sphere than it once was, but it is also less popular among scholars, who have been gradually abandoning folklore studies for other fields or have been renaming and redefining folklore studies, with the result that the discipline is decreasingly identifiable as the study of something called “folklore”. This essay takes such criticism of folklore as its point of departure, offering its own proposal for critically reexamining and reconceptualizing – but not abandoning – the idea of folklore. The author argues that a serious engagement with the idea of “the folk” may serve as a point of departure for understanding the symbolic ambiguity as well as the social significance and political power of what scholars call (or used to call) folklore. Scholars should neither uncritically accept the ideology of the folk, nor hastily banish the idea to the safe realm of the emic as if it had no bearing on the way we as scholars think. If the study of folklore has relevance in today’s world, it is above all because of the unusual notion that some kinds of expression are conditioned by some kind of social entity that can be called a folk, which continues to provide the most productive basis for a scholarly discipline studying folklore.

Autorka podejmuje pytanie o miejsce idei człowieczeństwa w kryzysie nowożytnego humanizmu. Kwestię tę rozważa w kontekście obrony przez filozofię idei człowieczeństwa przed zagrożeniami wynikającymi z modernizmu jako kultury „postludzkiej”. Warunkiem obrony jest zrozumienie i interpretacja współczesnego dyskursu społecznego i kulturowego oraz przezwyciężenie błędnych propozycji filozoficzno-antropologicznych humanizmu modernistycznego. Nowy program humanistyczny, odwołując się do „intuicji granicy”, miałby wyznaczać horyzont „ogólnoludzkich znaczeń”. Idea człowieczeństwa powinna przekształcić się z metafizycznej w permanentnie refleksyjną oraz zasadniczo dyskursywną.

The author takes up the question of the place of the idea of humanity in the crisis of modern humanism. This issue is contemplated in the context of defending by the philosophy of the idea of humanity against the threats posed by modernism as a „posthuman” culture. The condition of defence is the understanding and interpretation of contemporary social and cultural discourse and the overcoming the false philosophical-anthropological proposals of modernist humanism. The new humanistic program, referring to the „intuition of limits”, would be define the horizon of „universal meanings”. The idea of the humanity should turn from the metaphysical into a permanent reflective and fundamentally discursive.

The focus of the paper is the analysis of translators’ identities as expressed in Polish-to-English and English-to-Polish translations understood in terms of informed choices from spaces of meanings. The first part of the paper deals with the relation of approximate correspondences between thought and reality on the one hand, and between thought, image, linguistic system and cultural emotional type on the other.  The concept of semantic approximation in communication, introduced in Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk (2010, 2012) is shown to be conditioned by cognitive categorization problems of the language user, as well as a conscious  choice of the syntactic structure and meanings in discourse. The conscious choices from meaning spaces are motivated by the translator’s subjective intentions, as well as constraints imposed by the Target Language systems (displaced equivalence patterns), limitation on the translator’s linguistic repertory  and by Source Culture and Target Culture models and conventions. In the second part the study an interpretation is proposed of semantic and cultural SL and TL similarities, meaning displacement and reconceptualization in monolingual and intercultural communication and translation to account for the translator’s linguistic and cultural identity dynamics, with a varying emotional message. It is illustrated by examples of Polish-to-English and English-to-Polish translations.
