Background. The aim of the research was to analyze the recreational sports activity of students in the alpine region of Switzerland in relation to gender and town size. This explicitly includes motives, behavior, and attitude towards exercise and selected elements of physical education. Another aim was to find statistically significant correlations between several elements of physical education, leisure activity and level of sports activity. Material and methods. The research was conducted in 2013 among 412 students from the final class of grammar schools in the alpine region in Switzerland. These were 112 boys and 100 girls from a large town (over 100,000 inhabitants) and 104 boys and 96 girls from a small town (15,000 inhabitants). Kenyon’s ATPA Scale modified by the authors was used to investigate the students’ motives for participation in recreational sports activity. Another questionnaire developed by the authors was used to assess a few variables of leisure activities and school sports. Also an attitude scale was used to rate physical education in contrast to the other school subjects. Results and conclusions. The most important motives were health, catharsis, ascetic and social experience. The boys preferred risk and ascetic experience and the girls preferred aesthetic experience. Their favorite leisure activities were listening to music, meeting friends and practicing sport. Students were very active, which is reflected in the frequency in sport participation and the large number of sports. The choice depends on gender and town size. Soccer, skiing and cycling are the most popular sports among boys while girls mostly engage in cycling, swimming and skiing. Extreme sports activities are not practiced, but they are desired activities. The students get good marks in physical education, want more lessons and declare it is their favorite school subject. 82 % of the pupils are going to practice sport after leaving school. It was found that there are significant correlations between the frequency of sport participation, the male gender and the level of sports activity.
