The objective of the study is the analysis of the relations between the distribution of non-financial resources of health care protection at a regional level (voivodeships) and the state of health of the female and male population. The study refers, therefore, to a geographical concept, and the potential access to health service benefits. The following research hypotheses were formulated: (H1) non-financial resources are unevenly distributed among the regions; (H2) access to the health care services affects the state of health of females and males; (H3) there are time delays between the observed levels of accessibility and the state of health of the population. Relying on the Perkal method and on the analysis of the correlation between classes of accessibility of services and the state of health of females and males, described by the expected life span at the age of 30, 45 and 60, the truth of the postulated hypotheses was proved
Companies relocate in various manners. Some of them move by way of foreign direct investments, other relocate within their countries, regions or local areas of operation (e.g. when a company moves its seat to a different street). This paper focuses on the issue of relocating companies' seats. Data analysis (on NUTS2 level) indicates that migration of companies leads to an increased concentration of businesses in the Mazovia region, in particular in Warsaw. Additionally, it was demonstrated that in all of the Polish voivodeships the majority of companies that migrate do so within their regions. The weakest “magnet” for businesses are the voivodeships belonging to the least developed areas in Poland (Eastern Poland) and the Opole voivodeship, which undergoes a significant decline in population.
The author’s aim is to identify changes in the rate, intensity and direction of hotel development, as well as their number, type and capacity of in Poland, by category and province in 1990-2015. The objective is to define the influence of both tourism attractiveness and economic development factors (GNP, total capital expenditure, the value of gross fixed capital formation – GFCF) on the changing number of hotel rooms. The identification was based on commonly available materials provided by the Local Data Base (LDB) of the Central Statistical Office (CSO), as well as from statistical year books concerning the tourism sector. The article presents methods for analysing indices, as well as correlation and graphic presentation (graphs, maps). From 1990 to 2015, there was a rapid increase in the number and capacity of hotels in Poland (4.5 times), especially in higher (5* and 4*) and medium standard (3*) hotels. That increase was significantly diversified regionally and strongly depended on the tourism attractiveness and socioeconomic development of provinces.
The article Development of Economic Culture in terms of regional differentiation of rural areas relates to the issue of individualisation of development policies in the area of creating economic culture. Pointing to the nature and significance of economic culture as a factor of economic development, the author advocates a focus on some of the support instruments in order to influence its shape, taking into account Polish regional differences. The article uses the achievements of economic and sociological research based on the methodology of desk research and the use of its own research achievements.

The paper seeks to explain the influence of the so-called gravity effect on the regional diversity of economic growth in Poland. The gravity effect, which is a reference to Newton’s gravity law, is based on the assumption that regions have some economic influence on one another. The strength of these relationships is proportional to the size of the regional economies and inversely proportional to the distance between them. The applied model of economic growth refers to the neoclassical models of Solow; Mankiw, Romer and Weil; and Nonneman and Vanhoud. The presented model takes into account the gravity effect. The model has one non-trivial stationary point that is asymptotically stable, the authors say, which means that this point is a long-run economic equilibrium point. The paper examines the regional diversity of various macroeconomic indicators in the period from 1999 to 2011. Additionally, parameters of the labor productivity function are estimated at the regional level. The research yielded numerical simulations of two possible scenarios of the economic diversity of Polish regions. In the first scenario, it is assumed that investment rates are different in different regions (mean rates for each region from past periods). In the second scenario, the investment rates are the same for all regions. Both scenarios seem to indicate that the regional diversification of economic growth in Polish regions may decrease significantly, but the process of divergence was stronger under the regime imposed in the first scenario, the authors say. The strongest gravity effects were observed in an area bounded by the cities of Warsaw, Poznań and Wrocław as well as the southern Silesia region, with the possible inclusion of the city of Cracow. Peripheral regions in terms of the gravity effect, according to the authors, are provinces in eastern Poland as well as Świętokrzyskie in the center of the country, Pomorskie and Zachodniopomorskie in the north, and Lubuskie in the west.

W opracowaniu zaprezentowano model wzrostu gospodarczego uwzględniający efekt grawitacji. W dalszej części opracowania dokonano opisowej analizy zróżnicowania technicznego uzbrojenia pracy, wydajności pracy, jednostkowych i łącznych efektów grawitacyjnych w polskich województwach w latach 1999–2011.
The objective of the study was an evaluation of the regional diversity of the innovation system in Poland and changes which took place in this realm between 2009 and 2014. In the study, numerical taxonomy methods were used. A synthetic innovation index was built with the use of the non-model method. The results of analyses may be summarised as follows: regional disparities in the level of the innovation system in Poland have slightly decreased; however, they are still at the average level. This is confirmed by the value of the variability index, which dropped from the level of 31.6% in 2009 to the level of 29.9% in 2014. Regional convergence in the area of the innovation system was accompanied by internal convergence and divergence processes occurring in parallel in provinces. Internal convergence processes were observed in 11 provinces, and internal divergence processes were observed in the remaining five provinces, yet in the case of three of them, i.e. Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Świętokrzyskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie, such processes had a marginalising effect.
The study, based on publications and online CSO resources, attempts to analyze the current demographic structure, and selected labor market elements characteristic for a separate, closed area known as Polish and Eastern Europe. It is composed of five provinces, four of them: Lubelszczyzna, Podlasie, Subcarpathian and Świetokrzyskie administratively belonging to the Eastern Region and the fifth one - Warmia and Mazury, which is an administrative unit of the Northern Region. These regions constituting a third of the country’s area, and being home to the fifth part of the whole Polish population, are among the most marginalized areas of the country in terms of spatial, economic and social aspects. The analysis found that during the observation period, the Polish eastern provinces, both the availability of space and the structure of the population by age (inter alia resulting in the highest demographic dependency ratio in the country), as well as the employment structure (high share of employed in the agriculture, low share of those employed in services), or both unemployment rates, do not present an optimistic outlook. They all constitute a considerable threat to the state’s regional policy guidelines, all in favor of a trade-promotion polarization and diffusion model, favoring the so-called ‘locomotives of growth’, the richest provinces, which means further marginalization of the most vulnerable regions.

Przedmiotem opracowania, opartego na publikacjach i zasobach internetowych GUS, jest analiza aktualnej struktury demograficznej i wybranych elementów rynku pracy charakteryzujących wyodrębniony, zwarty obszar określany mianem Polski Wschodniej. W jego skład wchodzi pięć województw, cztery: lubelskie, podlaskie, podkarpackie i świętokrzyskie należące administracyjnie do Regionu Wschodniego i piąte warmińsko-mazurskie, będące jednostką administracyjną Regionu Północnego.
Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przedstawienie dynamiki wybranych wskaźników wyposażenia gospodarstw rolnych w ciągniki w województwach Polski z wykorzystaniem mierników dynamiki i modeli tendencji rozwojowej.

In recent years, the area structure of agricultural holdings in Poland has not changed significantly, small farms, up to 5 ha, still dominate. The purpose of this paper is to present dynamics of selected indicators of farm equipment in tractors in Polish voivodships. In this article indexes of dynamics and models of development trend have been used. The analysis shows that in Polish agriculture there is a large spatial variation in the equipment of tractors, both in terms of 100 farms and 100 ha of agricultural land. This variability has a clear relationship with the territorial distribution of holdings according to their average area.
Analizy prowadzono na podstawie danych pochodzących z raportów The World of Organic Agriculture.

We have observed in recent years dynamic development of organic farming both worldwide and in Europe. Contributed to this already in the early 1990s of the last century precise regulations. In Poland and in many other countries, integration with the European Union (EU) created greater opportunities for financial support of this type of agriculture. The aim of this paper is to present the dynamics of selected characteristics of organic farming in the years 2005-2014 in the countries, which along with Poland joined the EU in 2004. Analysis was carried out on the basis of the data from the reports of The World of Organic Agriculture. Studies showed that the development of organic farming in the countries is diverse. Changes in the analyzed processes were to be continuous, which allowed to determine the trends and make their extrapolation.
Intensywność drobnej prywatnej przedsiębiorczości, mierzonej udziałem osób pracujących na własny rachunek i zatrudniających pracowników najemnych w całości ludności zawodowo czynnej, wykazuje wysoką korelację z poziomem urbanizacji i wykształcenia. Badania przeprowadzone w dwu obwodach: grodzieńskim (zachód) i witebskim (w większości wschód) wykazały też różnice w postawach prywatnych przedsiębiorców. Ci pierwsi wykazują korzystniejsze cechy z punktu widzenia gospodarki rynkowej i konkurencyjności.

The article is demonstrates the differentiation of the intensity and characteristics of entrepreneurial activities in Belarus. With respect to many features, Belarus seems to be divided into the western and eastern part, that is, between the territory belonging before World War II to Poland and USSR. The eastern part is more urbanized (76% of urban population comparing to 60% in the west), includes largest cities and has better education indicators that the western part. As the entrepreneurship is highly correlated with education level and the degree of urbanization, it is not surprising that small business is most intense in Minsk and eastern Belarus. However, of the areas characterized by similar urbanization and education level, but located at different sides of the pre-war border, the entrepreneurship is decidedly more developed in the west. The research was conducted in the two regions: Grodziensk (western Belarus) and Witebsk (eastern Bealrus). It showed that the entrepreneurs from the western part of the republic are more free market oriented. While they main request from the central government was simply: less regulations, their counterparts in the east demanded rather more direct support from the state. This difference is the legacy of historical divisions and closer links of the western Belarus with the market economies of Poland and Lithuania.

The main purpose of this paper is to present selected methods of spatial-economic research with a special focus on Michalski's method. The enlargement of the European Union by new countries is an important opportunity to carry out comparative studies, making it possible to analyse and assess the competitiveness of regions as well as spatial and regional diversity of growth centres. The presented visualisation methods are the authors' modest contribution to literature on this subject. This contribution includes collecting domestic methods, their implementation in research and some modifications. The purpose of these methods was to examine spatial processes (in such areas as: economy, demography, agriculture, quality of life or building) in different spatial sections, in the years 19901992. There are many methods of examining similarity (dissimilarity) of regional structures. All of them fundamentally depend on the concept of structure. In this paper, two different approaches of this concept and the relevant measures shall be presented. Furthermore, various methods of visualisation of the obtained measures shall be presented.
Poszczególne miary wskaźnika stanu zdrowia (HIS) i wskaźnika ubóstwa (PoI) zostały dodatkowo zestawione w macierzy rozwoju. Purpose: The main goal of the paper is to investigate the association between poverty and health and to assess the Polish NUTS-2 level differentiation with time points of the analysis set for 2013 and 2018. Design/methodology/approach: In order to collate poverty and health state, two separate data sets have been created, consisting of determinants that describe the various aspects of combined phenomena, differentiated among Polish regions. We use data on poverty and health across Polish voivodships. Our data sets are obtained from Local Data Bank (LDB) of the Polish Central Statistical Office (CSO). On the basis of the proposed indicators, the multidimensional character of the phenomena is examined, and the degree of their intensity and changes in tendencies over time are assessed. Health State Index (HIS) and Poverty Index (PoI) individual measures were further compiled in the development matrix. Findings: The results indicate a link between health and poverty at the regional level, while the usage of the development matrix technique allows the assessment of opportunities and threats for selected spatial units. The results confirm both positive as well as negative changes in indices levels in the analysed period. Moreover, the strength of this relationship decreases slightly over the selected time points. The identified changes originate mainly in recorded levels of poverty, while the situation of spatial objects in 2018 (compared to 2013) deteriorates mainly due to reasons related to the state of health. Research limitations/implications: Because of the design of the development matrix, it is not advised to use the technique for a high number of objects/units. The proposed approach could give certain information on the rate of changes, indicating the increases/decreases in the combined indicator levels. Although the results are summarised by an image of coordinates in the development matrix space diagram, the identification of a unique object might be limited. Hence, only overall tendencies, like for the correlation scatterplot, could be illustrated by the graph. However, this does not diminish the importance of this technique, and by applying appropriate sampling, the in-depth study of both poverty and health state could be easily achieved. Originality/value: The research study assumed to use several groups of indicators for the construction of synthetic indices. The proposed measures highlight a multidimensional concept of the analysed phenomena. The research can be an example of a supportive tool for planning regional strategies that are aimed at improving the health condition or reducing poverty intensity. Analizę przeprowadzono w ujęciu czasowym i przestrzennym. Poruszane problemy dotyczą: zróżnicowania terytorialnego poziomu i struktury wydatków; określenia społeczno-ekonomicznych determinant kształtowania się wydatków; zmian zachodzących w poziomie i strukturze wydatków w latach 2000–2014; oceny poziomu nasycenia dla podstawowych agregatów dóbr i usług. W analizie wykorzystano zagregowane dane liczbowe pochodzące z badań budżetów gospodarstw domowych przeprowadzanych przez GUS w latach 2000–2014. Punkt odniesienia w ocenie dynamiki badanych cech stanowi rok 2000, w którego cenach wyrażono realne dochody i wydatki gospodarstw domowych.

The paper presents the results of the statistical analysis of the evolution of household expenditures in years 2000–2014. This time span covers the ongoing economic and social transformation, characterised by evolving living conditions, i.e. consumption patterns, needs, and behaviours which are reflected in household expenditures. In this paper, the attention is focused on the structure of expenditures on basic consumer goods and services. It examines the following problems: the territorial differentiation of the levels and structures of household expenditures; the socio-economic determinants of the expenditures; the changes in the level and structure of the expenditures in years 2000–2014; household needs regarding the considered goods and services. The analysis uses the aggregated data from household budget surveys carried out by Central Statistical Office of Poland between 2000 and 2014. The benchmark for the dynamics of the studied features is the year 2000. Thus, its prices are used to estimate real incomes and expenditures of households in the analysed period. The research tools used in the analysis consist of the methods of classification of features, objects, and periods, as well as econometric models. The methods of classification allow identifying the sub-periods characterised by an internal similarity of expenditure structure. The attempts to apply the multiple regression models enable to compare the level of and structure of the expenses in household subsets, the similarities and disparities in income distribution, and significant changes in the structure of the expenditures over the period considered.
