The article demonstrates in what way the popularity of the problems of regional studies influences the development of learning (including the history of education), local societies and, paradoxically, the evolution of global history. Additionally, the author of the article gives reasons, apart from globalization phenomena and the uniting of Europe, is the methodological “revolution” in the field of social sciences, which has significantly altrered the resarch perspective of historians.

The article presents the history of creation and organization of the archives in the western and northern territory of Poland (the recovered territories), as well as preparation of staff to work in these institutions. Much space is devoted to the use of the collections for scientific work and the most important publica-tions about the region are listed. Also, the role of these archives in the teaching process at universities or in the dissemination of knowledge is pointed out. Church archives in the western and northern territory have also become the institutions integrating and connecting the two communities – the German one (inhabitating the territory before 1945) and the Polish one. Employees of these archives as ones of the first alluded cooperation with former residents, who found a new homeland in western Germany, answer the questions about genea-logical research or participate in a number of scientific symposia. Meetings organized for youth and school children and training courses prepared for stu-dents are also an important measure of the commitment of church archives in the regional sense. Creation of good conditions for the storage of records and development of resources made implementation of these tasks easier. Extensive cooperation has also appeared after the erection of the Universities of Szczecin, Opole and Olsztyn.

The economic distance defines a dissimilarity level between objects functioning in the economic space. It is one of the most important issues of spatial econometrics. However its measurement is difficult due to the definition, description and estimation problems. The objective of the paper is to indicate the role of symbolic data in describing the economic distance and also the way of its measurement using symbolic data analysis methods. A significance of the economic distance, measurement problems, symbolic data concept and dissimilarity measures, and also an empirical example were presented in the paper.

Regional studies cover a spectrum of diversified phenomena and problems including social, economic and environmental ones, which refer to territorial units. Owing to their specific characteristics they are most frequently of both multivariate and complex nature. Conducting regional research is associated with the need to consider such difficulties as large data sets, insufficient precision of phenomena description, disregarding territorial diversification of a given phenomenon, as well as incomplete description of problems. The objective of the paper is to suggest solutions to these problems by means of symbolic approach application which basically consists in presenting phenomena in the form of symbolic data. The first part of the paper discusses specific nature of symbolic data, methods for collecting symbolic data and methods for these data analysis. The second part presents an empirical example referring to the assessment of labour market situation in Polish regions (NTS-2) using symbolic data and cluster analysis.

The author presents the beginning of the Polish-Jewish issues in public discourse and literature in Poland in the 1920s and describes its dominant nostalgic features. Moreover, he shows how nostalgia permeated to the description of Polish-Jewish relations in the regional historiography in Poland. Next, he discusses the main features of this type of narrative including its danger. An example of such stories and their limitations, mainly hiding Polish anti-Semitism, is Jan Przedpełski’s book The Jews of Płock. Finally, the author points to the gradual overcoming of the nostalgic myth of Polish-Jewish relations in the regional historiography of the XXI century.

Autor przedstawia wyłonienie się w Polsce w latach 80. XX wieku tematyki polsko-żydowskiej w dyskursie publicznym i literaturze oraz opisuje jej dominujące, nostalgiczne cechy. Następnie pokazuje, jak nostalgia przeniknęła do opisu stosunków polsko-żydowskich w historiografii regionalnej, omawia główne cechy tego typu narracji oraz niebezpieczeństwa z nich płynące. Przykładem tego typu opowieści i ich ograniczeń – przede wszystkim skrywania polskiego antysemityzmu – jest książka Żydzi płoccy Jana Przedpełskiego. Na koniec autor wskazuje na stopniowe przezwyciężanie nostalgicznego mitu stosunków polsko-żydowskich w historiografii regionalnej XXI wieku.

The article shows the origins of regional research from Romantic Period up to contemporary times. It is also shown how the path of regional education plays an important role in teaching history of the region, the small country. The article presents the impact of regional education on cultivating family, local, religious and national traditions and on forming appropriate attitudes. What is more, the article emphasizes the immense role of museums. It presents the influence of various forms of regional education on preparing the students to participate in the life of local community. Finally, the article indicates how significant regional history and cultivating tradition are for citizenship education.

Artykuł omawia genezę badań regionalnych od czasów romantyzmu do współczesności. Pokazuje, jak ważną rolę pełni ścieżka edukacji regionalnej w poznawaniu dziejów własnego regionu, malej ojczyzny. Przedstawia wpływ edukacji regionalnej na poszanowanie i kultywowanie tradycji rodzinnych, lokalnych, religijnych i państwowych oraz na kształtowanie właściwych postaw patriotycznych. Wskazuje na dużą rolę muzeów w edukacji regionalnej. Prezentuje wpływ różnych form edukacji regionalnej na przygotowanie uczniów do uczestnictwa w życiu lokalnego społeczeństwa. Ukazuje wreszcie jak ważną rolę odgrywają dzieje regionalne (jako element nauki historycznej) i kultywowanie tradycji w zakresie wychowania obywatelskiego.

The article show the results of research on social services in the areas of activation of people with intellectual disabilities. First, an analysis of resource institutions for the provision of care and social services. Then, referring to the opinion of people with intellectual disabilities and their carers about form of obstacles to the social activation. The territorial area of the research included region of Wielkopolska, empirical material was obtained on the basis of qualitative and quantitative research. The study was commissioned by the Regional Centre for Social Policy in Poznan.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących usług społecznych w zakresie aktywizacji osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Przeprowadzono analizę zasobów instytucji powołanych do świad­czenia usług opiekuńczych oraz usług aktywizacji społecznej i zawodowej. Następnie, odwołując się do opinii osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną oraz ich opiekunów, omówione zostały najczęstsze formy aktywizacji oraz wskazano na główne bariery w ich realizacji. Zakres terytorialny badań obejmował województwo wielkopolskie, a materiał empiryczny uzyskano na podstawie badań ilościowych oraz jakościowych. Badania zostały zlecone przez Regionalny Ośrodek Polityki Społecznej w Poznaniu.
