The Functions of Narrative Passages in Three Written Online Health Contexts

This paper investigates and compares the functions of narrative passages in three computermediated health practices centering on advice-giving: (1) email counseling at a UK university, (2) online forums providing peer support for quitters of smoking, and (3) anti-smoking websites by UK governmental, commercial and charitable institutions. We found that the functions of the narrative passages are manifold and often overlapping. They range from seeking advice, giving advice, indicating/seeking agreement, supporting a claim, showing compliance with advice given to reporting on progress and success. In a second step, these insights were linked to how the narrative passages were used for identity construction and relational work. The results show that narratives are employed to create various identities, such as authentic advice-seekers, active self-helpers, successful quitters and advice-givers. Our comparison reveals that narrative functions utilized in all three practices exhibit nuanced differences due to medium factors and interactional goals of the practices. Finally, in these contexts of self-improvement, narratives document stability or transformation in the sense of clients’ improved health and smokers’ change to becoming non-smokers respectively.

Przepływy pieniężne między ludźmi w bliskich, nieformalnych i pozarynkowych relacjach stanowią stały element życia codziennego. Jednak zasady, na jakich oparte są te przepływy oraz znaczenie, jakie ze sobą niosą, do niedawna rzadko stanowiły obiekt zainteresowania socjologów. Celem tego tekstu jest podążenie za perspektywą proponowaną przez nową socjologię ekonomiczną oraz relacyjnie i kulturowo zorientowaną socjologię pieniądza, by przyjrzeć się, w jaki sposób codzienne praktyki posługiwania się pieniędzmi w bliskich relacjach tworzonych przez dorosłych oraz ich rodziców i partnerów życiowych prezentowane są w dyskusjach toczonych na forach internetowych. Posługując się kategorią „pracy relacyjnej” (Zelizer 2012) tekst ten analizuje wypowiedzi internetowe, by pokazać, jak ludzie kierując się emocjami i ukrytymi założeniami dotyczącymi tego, co jest „słuszne” lub „sprawiedliwe”, dążą do praktykowania „właściwego” posługiwania się pieniędzmi w nieformalnych sytuacjach i tym samym, w jaki sposób pieniądze stają się medium kształtowania moralnego porządku w bliskich relacjach.

The flows of money between people in close, informal, and non-market relationships are the basic element of everyday life. However, the rules that govern these flows and the meanings created within these exchanges have until recently rarely been an object of sociological analysis. The purpose of this text is to follow the perspective proposed by the new economic sociology and culturally oriented sociology of money in order to analyze how everyday practices of handling the money in close relationships created by young adults, their life partners, and parents are presented in the internet message boards. By applying the category of ‘relational work’ (Zelizer 2012) the text examines the internet comments in order to show how people, driven by emotions and hidden assumptions what is ‘right’ or ‘fair’, tend to practice the ‘right’ use of money in informal situations, and thus how money becomes a medium of creating the moral order in close relationships.
